The Beat of Hawaii was on the scene today. Rain gauges reported more than 3 inches an hour. Here’s a photo taken of the new river in our backyard. It’s going to take months for the water to clear. So much for mowing!
Some North Shore homes are in danger and the Hanalei River bridge remains closed. On the Southwest shore a large shipping container broke loose on the Hanapepe River causing water to back up with significant flooding and evacuations reported.
One tip: Never open the garage door in a flood situation. I did and the flood waters flowed in!
If you’re in the islands, what was your experience with today’s rain?

It’s Super Bowl weekend. I plan to have a plate of Hawaii rambutan next to me for the game. According to recent news articles, it’s important to my heart that I relax during the game and avoid fatty foods. I’m betting that sitting in a lotus position with a plate of rambutan will do just the trick.
Rambutan is an exotic fruit and my favorite winter treat here in the islands. You’ll see them for sale at roadside stands or at markets in January and February. These leathery skinned fruits with pliable spines may seem odd at first. Whatever you do, don’t bite into them.
Here’s the best way to prepare a plate of rambutan for the game:
- Score outside with knife around the circumference.
- Toss the half without the fruit.

- Hold the other half and squeeze the fruit in mouth.
- Be careful of the seed inside while you enjoy the sweet taste.
What’s on your Super Bowl plate?
