Bay Area to Hawaii $143 Each way

Aug 12, 2010 8 Comments by

Updated 8/16/10:  These offers are still valid, and now includes Hilo, Kona, and Lihue.

There continue to be good airfare deals to Hawaii from California’s Bay Area Airports, and this time you have your choice of three airlines.  Other routes from the Bay Area to Hawaii are somewhat higher, but still below seasonal norms due to ongoing competition between Alaska, Hawaiian and United Air.  Some of the prices vary a few dollars more or less, depending on the carrier.  Total price, including taxes is approximately $333, round-trip.

Routes:

  • Sacramento to Honolulu or Maui
  • Oakland to Maui
  • San Jose to Maui

Airlines:

  • Alaska Airlines, Hawaiian Airlines, United Airlines

Dates:

  • Late August through mid-November

I found fares using airline websites as well as Kayak and Travelocity flexible date searches.

Hi guys… This is a great deal, although not from my city of departure, but I notice that all the good deals end in mid November. What are the odds at this point of getting a good Thanksgiving week rate from LAX to Maui? I’ve got a place to stay but the air is making the trip a no-go for this family of 4. As a teacher, it’s this week or nothing. Any thoughts?

    Hi Susan,

Usually we don’t see great deals over Thanksgiving week, and even when we do, they often aren’t right on that week, but starting a few days earlier, or ending a few days later. That’s what we saw with the sensational $100-$125 airfares in the past couple of weeks. It really comes down to how competitive and/or desperate the airlines become. I’d say it’s 50/50.

    Aloha, Jeff

I checked with the airlines, but couldn’t find this deal. Do you have a phone number?

  4. Jeff says:

    Hi Debbie,

These prices are all still valid as of this morning.

How did you “check with the airlines?” They are available online at their websites, not via telephone. As the post says, you can also check availability and purchase through Kayak, Travelocity, and other third party sites. Phone is never a good way to buy airline tickets.

    Aloha,
    Jeff

I saw this post and decided to see if a similar deal was available to Kona. Indeed it was. I was able to book a trip from San Jose to Kona (with a connection in LA) in November for $329 (including all fees) roundtrip on United! A non-stop from SFO to Kona would have cost me at least $400 more.

Now that I have my plane ticket, I’m looking for a place to stay. We like the area south of Kailua-Kona, but are concerned about the vog due to my wife’s asthma. Anyone have some insight on whether or not this might be a problem?

  6. Jeff says:

    Hi Michael,

Yes the VOG can be a problem, and it is unpredictable. We were there last week and it was fine and clear. That’s the first time I’ve seen it like that in a number of trips.

    Aloha, Jeff

Hi – My friend recently turned me on to your site and I am already in love with it and recommending it every chance I get. I am hoping you can help me with my questions.

I live in the SF Bay area and heard that Alaska is supposed to be starting direct service from San Jose to Kauai starting in March, yet I can’t seem to get any confirmation of this. We have a place in Hanalei booked for next July and I’d love to try to get a direct flight, but am wary of waiting until this service starts and missing a better deal somewhere else. (airfare
brings out the worst in me–it’s like trying to time the stock market or count cards in vegas!) So I guess my first question is, can you confirm this?

My follow up questions would be, how early would we be able to book something like this, and what are your thoughts as far as waiting or jumping on the first good deal I see?

    Please share your wisdom!!

    Mahalo!! : )

  8. Jeff says:

    Hi Missy,

The Alaska Air flights from San Jose to Kauai are already loaded on Alaska’s website and available for purchase. The July fares start at over $300 each way, which is not a surprise for that time of year. All bets are off as far as whether we will see discounting for next summer’s peak travel time, and if so, when.

    Aloha, Jeff
