Can Rambutan Reduce Super Bowl Stress?

Published by Rob at 4:56 am under Culture and Events

It’s Super Bowl weekend. I plan to have a plate of Hawaii rambutan next to me for the game. According to recent news articles, it’s important to my heart that I relax during the game and avoid fatty foods. I’m betting that sitting in a lotus position with a plate of rambutan will do just the trick.

Rambutan is an exotic fruit and my favorite winter treat here in the islands. You’ll see them for sale at roadside stands or at markets in January and February. These leathery skinned fruits with pliable spines may seem odd at first. Whatever you do, don’t bite into them.

Here’s the best way to prepare a plate of rambutan for the game:

  • Score outside with knife around the circumference.
  • Toss the half without the fruit.
  • Hold the other half and squeeze the fruit in mouth.
  • Be careful of the seed inside while you enjoy the sweet taste.

What’s on your Super Bowl plate?

i love rambutan and lychee! most hawaii visitors have never even heard about those exotic fruits or seen any in the stores.

on the big island, they are rare to find on the west coast but who wants to try those delicious, mouth watering fruits, you can get them at hilo’s farmers market for a good price! yummie! enjoy. aloha, pua

    Hi Pua!

Thanks for your comment. For some reason it was sent to our spam file and I just caught it today. Memo to self: check that file daily so it doesn’t happen again.

We buy our rambutan from Jude Huber who is a Moloa’a farmer here on Kauai. During the season, she’ll park her truck on the highway in Puhi.

I love the Hilo farmer’s market too and will be there later this month.

    Aloha,

    Rob
