Hawaii Checked Bag Fees: Update and Suggestions

Hawaii Checked Bag Fees: Update and Suggestions

How many of you check the government’s General Accounting Office (GAO) website for checked bag fees? If you didn’t raise your hand, don’t feel bad. This is my first time on their site too.

Here’s a recent update from the  GAO on those dreaded (first/second) bag fees for airlines based in the United States that serve Hawaii (or plan to soon):

  • Alaska $20/$20 (the best deal)
  • Allegiant $35/$35 (may not be bad if you pay less to fly)
  • American, Continental, Delta, Hawaiian, United, US Airways $25/$35* (second bag ouch)

Those who hold elite status with an airline, may qualify for free baggage. If you’re not in this category, there are other ways to avoid baggage fees. Here are some suggestions:

1.  Affiliated credit cards.

  • Delta’s SkyMiles American Express credit card holders have their first checked bag fee waived for all those on the same reservation (up to 9).
  • Continental’s Chase One Pass Plus card holders also have their first checked bag fee waived.
  • Hawaiian offers trans-Pacific Coach Plus tickets, for an extra fee, that include two checked bags.

Expect to see more of these alliances which can be of benefit if you check bags and travel enough to pay for the annual credit card fee, but not enough to attain elite status.

2.  Add some weight to your person that can easily be shed in Hawaii.

Wear your not only your hiking boots, but your jacket and long pants on the plane.  The more you wear on, the less you pack.

3. Read our other luggage reducing ideas.

* Many of the carriers offer a discount (usually $2) for checked bags when bought online, in advance.

Just a clarification: Not all Delta AMEX cardholders get free checked bags. It’s only for “Consumer and Small Business Gold, Platinum and Reserve Delta SkyMiles Credit Cardmembers.”
