Hawaii Hurricane Season May Be Trip Insurance Reason
It’s hurricane season here in our tropical paradise. Once we hit December 15 we’re safe for another year. While it has been a number of years since the last hurricane hit the islands, it’s always good to take precautions.
Residents Know The Drill
Hurricane awareness and precautions are standard for locals. I went down the list and I still have a few things left to do. These include, among other things:
- Keeping more gasoline and propane on hand.
- Stockpiling plywood and tarps to deal with wind and water.
- Storage vessels for additional drinking water.
- Extra food, especially non-perishable (standard for both hurricanes and shipping strikes).
- Keeping plenty of batteries on hand and a radio that works.
- First aid/medical supplies.
- Cash.
- All rechargables fully charged.
- Generator tested and ready.
- Shopping: it must be done quickly, prior to public panic which leaves all store shelves empty.
Tip for Visitors Traveling During Hurricane Season: Consider Trip Insurance
Airlines may be willing to allow you to reschedule your trip if a hurricane is definitely on the map. Travel insurance can cover you no matter the airline’s decision, and protect all other non-refundable deposits too. If you’ll be visiting in the peak hurricane months of August through November, it is worth at least contemplating and pricing trip insurance for those expenses.
Travel insurance (like any insurance) is complex, and it is imperative that you’re clear on what coverage you need. Policies offer coverage for a range of issues from emergency medical to canceled, interrupted or delayed trips; to baggage issues and cancel for any reason. Know which situations are you wanting coverage for.
Hurricanes are covered as natural disasters and insurance must be bought prior to knowledge of any specific storm. I suggest pricing trip insurance coverage with sites like quotewright.com and insuremytrip.com. Read all of the coverage options and understand the issues or if you’re not sure, call their representative for details.
I’ve written a number of posts covering most every aspect of trip insurance. You’ll find the links below this post.
