Hawaii-Style Gelato at Nordstrom
Nordstrom recently opened its first Hawaii store at Ala Moana. A flight attendant friend at Hawaiian Airlines sent us there to try the chain’s first gelato bar. We weren’t too difficult to convince.
Maurice Grasso has been making gelato in Honolulu for the past 27 years. Nordstrom selected his company, La Gelateria Italian Ice Cream, to be its provider.
The gelato. We are ice cream connoisseurs and have enjoyed the original gelato from Italy. If you compare the two, this doesn’t come out as well. We missed the gooey eggyness of the real thing. On the other hand, the flavors we tried (chocolate and raspberry) were excellent.
Service. There was no line when we arrived and we were promptly and courteously helped. We were offered samples and when we made our selection, we were asked how we wanted them served. Two extremely large scoops cost $3.50, which by any standard is a great deal. We had the server split the scoops into two cups.
Ambiance. The gelato bar is bright and lively, with light woods, tile, nice lighting, and comfortable seating. There are no windows, which is perhaps the bar’s only downfall.
Location. Sandwiched between the interior and exterior doors, street level, at the Diamond Head side parking lot entrance.
Overall Rating: B plus.
