Hawaiian Airlines and Go! | A Contrast in Time(liness)

Hawaiian AirlinesĀ ranks regularly at the top of all US carriers for on-time performance. That is due to multiple factors, one of which is that a large number of their flights are short Hawaii inter-island jaunts in what is almost always good weather.

Competitor Go! Airlines, should, based on the above rationale, have equally or more impressive statistics since they fly solely within Hawaii. However nothing could be further from the truth according to the latest numbers from the US Department of Transportation.

Go! Airlines flights are chronically late

DOT’s latest statisticsĀ (pgs. 16/17) indicate that seven of Go!’s Hawaii flights are chronically late. Those are flights between Honolulu and Kona, Kauai and Maui. Here’s a summary of data covering the months of March and April, 2013:

Flight 1026 from Honolulu to Kona

  • Late 38 times
  • Average delay 67 minutes

Flight 1036 from Honolulu to Kona

  • Late 30 times
  • Average delay 87 minutes

Flight 1025 from Kona toĀ Honolulu

  • Late 48 times
  • Average delay 68 minutes

Flight 1037 fromĀ Kona toĀ Honolulu

Flight 1059 fromĀ Kona toĀ Honolulu

Moral of the story is that if you are planning to fly Go!, you may not “Go” when you’re ready. Come prepared with things to do while you wait. Allow extra time if you are using Go! to connect with a mainland flight. Call ahead to see if the airline is running late and squeeze out extra minutes at the beach.
