Hawaiian Airlines Increases LA Competition Amid Record Passengers

Hawaiian Airlines is moving quickly into more mainland-to-neighbor-island flights previously dominated by Alaska Airlines and legacy carriers. And it’s all starting with arguably the most important Hawaii gateway city of all, Los Angeles.

Concurrently, Virgin America recently added flights to Hawaii from San Francisco and appears to be heading in the exact same mainland-to-neighbor-island direction as Hawaiian Airlines. So this is going to get interesting. Virgin America will soon be adding flights to the Hawaiian Islands from Los Angeles.

Beat of Hawaii’s Analysis:

  • Los Angeles to Hawaii flights will again be competitively priced on a regular basis, as has been the case for example with the San Francisco Bay Area. We can’t say exactly when this is going to happen, but it could be anytime from now through early next year; probably sooner than later. This all depends on the airlines and their hunger for competition. With the low cost of jet fuel, we think their appetite is strong.
  • Sub $400 airfares! We have already seen significant anticipatory pressure on Los Angeles to Hawaii airfare prices.  Earlier this week we featured $398 Hawaii travel deals between Los Angeles and both Honolulu and Maui. LA airfares had been at the $600 breaking point for a while, and it had been a long time since they had gone under $400. And this is just the beginning.

Kauai Flights

Hawaiian Airlines’ year-round nonstop service between LA and Kauai started December 18, 2015. This followed the carrier’s first time operating LAX-LIH flights over the holidays from December 18, 2015 to January 4, 2016, running five times weekly. Flights are continuing to run three times per week until May when they go to four times and in June they will move to daily service through the summer. Flights are on Hawaiian Airlines’ 767 wide-body aircraft, which be be used until they begin delivery of their new Airbus 321neo planes next year. These long-range and fuel efficient narrow-body planes with become the new west coast to Hawaii workhorse for many to most Hawaiian Air flights.

Kona Flights

New Hawaiian Air flights to the Big Island from Los Angeles will start on May 27. Through September 5, 2016, service will be four times weekly. Flights to and from Kona will use wide-body A330 aircraft.

Record Passengers

Hawaiian Airlines just announced that in 2015 they served a record 10.7 million passengers. This as the carrier celebrated eleven years of continuous passenger growth.

  1. I love all these cheap rates, but any ideas if you want to plan like for next winter? Or any deals on first class? Got a anniversary coming next winter and want to start planning and make it GREAT!
