Honolulu Becomes US Gateway to China

Three carriers have jumped on routes to Mainland China, and with that much competition, there will likely be good news ahead for Hawaii deals.

Today Air China announced that they will compete directly with Hawaiian Airlines. Both carriers now have upcoming routes, each three times a week between Honolulu and Beijing. Hawaiian’s service is set to begin in April, while Air China’s service will commence earlier in January.

We’re waiting to hear if Hawaiian Airlines will offer a free stopover on their China route for passengers who transit Hawaii when traveling from the US mainland. Air China cannot offer Hawaii stopovers and will be marketing mostly to Chinese citizens.

The third carrier between Honolulu and China is China Eastern, which flies between Shanghai and Honolulu.

We’ll be standing by watching for Hawaii deals between Honolulu and Beijing.

  1. Just FYI, I have experienced excellent service on Air China and terrible service on China Eastern. Air China walked me through passport immigration and directed me to the British Air terminal in Dusseldorf when my flight from Beijing arrived late for a connecting flight with airline change to London.

Meanwhile, China Eastern cancelled our group’s return flight home from Chengdu, put everyone on a later flight from Chengdu to Shanghai, and put only some on a connecting flight (which was only half full) out of Shanghai (minus luggage). The rest of the group ended up having to stay overnight in Shanghai which resulted in missed connections to New York from LA.

I was really glad I flew home via Europe on Air China instead of with the group.
