How Will President Obama Affect Hawaii?
While Barack Obama hasn’t lived in Hawaii recently, and both our state and Illinois have some claim to him, we’ve already heard of the possibility of an Obama western White House here in the islands.
I believe that Hawaii will definitely see benefits from Obama’s presidency. But just what might the impact be? Here are some of my thoughts:
1. Significant visibility for Hawaii and its culture.
Obama’s presidency will bring our state front and center both nationally and internationally. His election is viewed by Hawaii residents as confirmation that our values of concensus building and diversity have great importance that will be transported onto the global stage.
2. Increased relevancy for the State of Hawaii in national affairs.
People will remember that even though Hawaii is not part of North America, it’s still one of the 50 states. When I first arrived in Hawaii, I worked in the visitor industry. I remember asking people where they came from and the response was often, “the States.”
3. More mention of and visitor interest in Hawaii, based on the President’s history here.
Since leaving Hawaii after his high school graduation, President Obama has returned each year to see family and friends, bodysurf, indulge in local foods and more. When the Press starts covering his visits here, it will create new interest in Hawaii as a vacation destination.
4. Increased federal spending and congressional clout for Hawaii.
There are rumors that Senator Daniel Inouye may be named chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee through which all federal spending is channeled. Senator Daniel Akaka is also being mentioned as possible head for the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee. And don’t forget the important contributions of senior House Members, Neil Abercrombie and Mazie Hirono.
5. More recognition of our Hawaii independent schools.
I’ve been to the President’s alma mater, Punahou School, many times during my days as a college admission officer. It’s a proud moment for Punahou, the largest independent school in the United States.
Now it’s your turn. What are your thoughts on President-elect Obama’s impact on Hawaii?
