  1. Wish I had consulted this site before my Hawaiian visit! I booked a trip to swim with the manta rays last night in Kohana, on the Big Island and was stung badly by a box jellyfish. I have sting marks on my face, neck, chest and arms. Have tried hot baths, Benadryl, neosporin and pain killer. Anyone have advice on what else I can do? The sting marks alternate between burning, stinging, and itching. Do I need to worry about scarring?

    1. Hi Drea.

We don’t have any further advise beyond what we’ve tried and others have suggested. Hope you heal up soon and that your memories will more about the manta rays than about the jellyfish. We have also done that near the old Kona airport and it was incredible.

      Aloha.

      1. It might be a good idea to post something about the difference between regular and box jelly fish and man o’war as the treatments for one are very different for the other. You won’t want to exacerbate an already bad situation by applying the wrong treatment as well as either hot water-when it should be cold, and vice versa.

    2. My son was stung severely on his abdomen arms legs and feet. After the initial sting, he rubbed it when he was trying to wash it off and spread it around further. I believe the vinegar works, but my son’s discomfort was severe. He took benadryl and the only thing that alleviated his pain was lavender essential oils or a blend of lavender chamomile massage oil from bath and body Works. My husband had a small sting the week before that went untreated and he ended up with a scar. My son’s marks were gone in a week with this treatment.

  2. I got stung today at black sand beach (beautify btw) in Hana!!! Did it ever hurt. I think I was the only one in the bay. Local said to pee in it! Then we got vinegar from restaurant!!!

  3. I was unaware of the risk and got stung on the morning of May 31 at Waikiki. It was not a pleasant experience. The discomfort lasted almost eight hours. At first I thought I was stung all over my body, but know now that it was actually just a couple of spots. A surf

  4. I hope you post these dates annually. I arrange my travel to avoid being on the islands 10 days following a full moon. So far, this has been a successful plan!

  5. My wife was stung on April 29th 2016 in Waimanalo beach, Oahu, few meters from the shore. The stings were all around her hands, arms and in her back. I helped her to get out of the water and tried to take out the stings as I could. She couldnt move her hands normally. The lifeguard came inmediatly, sprayed her with vinager and told her to take a hot shower. He explained her that in about 20 minutes the pain should start to reduce and in a couple of hours she would be fine. It took us about 40 minutes to arrive to the hotel, so it was a very painful trip for her until she was able to get the hot shower. That worked inmediatly but the painful sensation remained for a couple hours more.

  6. Hi. Thanks for the information! And special thanks for including relief tips! I was stung once in Oahu, I think a small one, but wow! Those little suckers can pack a punch. We are traveling to Maui next week and I was wondering… What about Beginning of April? I noticed all months except April. I believe there’s a full moon on March 23.
    Thank you in advance.
    Kind Regards. 🙂

    1. Hi Shawn,

Thanks for pointing that out. We’ve updated the March/April caution dates.

      Aloha.

  7. I got stung at Kapalua Bay Maui, this afternoon on 3/2/16. I didn’t see the jelly fish but left the water after I felt a pricking feeling on my shoulder. It feels like a whole bunch of needles is poking in one spot. And it does continue to be painful. The lifeguard did not have vinegar. He suggested rubbing sand onto the spot. That actually felt better but only momentarily. I did not wash off with fresh water. Only salt water. So that sounded like a benefit.
The news stations should post and beaches should post these dates. Mine fell right into the predicted dates on this site.

  8. I was stung around 2:00 pm February 5, 2016 while snorkeling on the south side of Po’olenalena Beach. We were about 100 yards offshore on the south end of the beach. Once I got back to shore I rinsed in cold water (I know now I shouldn’t have) and the pain continued to increase. By the time we found a place to purchase white vinegar the pain was deep and severe, I was nauseated. Rinsing the sting site with vinegar was helpful. It didn’t take the pain away but it lessened it. A hot shower helped with pain but it intensified when I got out. Rinsing with vinegar again decreased the pain somewhat. Advil helped with pain. By 7:00 the next morning nearly all the pain was gone to the point that I was fine to swim and snorkel again. It was a surprise, my family has come to Maui many times and we snorkel and swim for hours each day. None of us have been stung before.
