Lihue Barbecue Inn: Our Pick for Best Budget Eats on Kauai

This past weekend, the Los Angeles Times featured their 20 cheap eats on Kauai for under $20 a person.  Jeff’s doesn’t agree with all of their choices and will tell you why soon.

One thing we both agree on is their inclusion of the Lihue Barbecue Inn.  This is our top pick for family style food on Kauai at an affordable price.  We’ve both been regulars here a long time and have never been disappointed.

Their fresh catch lunch special tops our list for best value.  Budget priced at $13.95, it’s a complete meal.  I’m talking fish, soup, rice or french fries, salad, beverage and even homemade pie.  Yes, desert too.  Each meal complimented by their friendly service and Aloha spirit.

Owned and operated by the same family since 1941, this local restaurant is a place where everyone is treated as ohana.  Millie, who is the current owner, is usually around to greet guests.  We also like the fact that there’s little turnover in staff.  Chris is without doubt our favorite server but in truth we love them all.

The menu features American and Japanese entrees with a Hawaiian Plate twist.  Place this high on your list on your next trip to Kauai.

Directions:  Located in Lihue on Kress Street, a small side street off of Rice between Salvation Army and Lee’s Furniture; phone: 808-245-2921.

Hours:  Breakfast: 6:30am to 10:30am, Lunch: 10:30am to 1:30pm, Dinner 5:00pm to 8:30pm (except Friday and Saturday when dinner is served from 4:30pm  to 8:45pm).  Closed on Sunday.

Note: The fresh catch dinner is a larger serving and more expensive.  You’ll still find many dinner options for under $20 on the menu.

If you’ve eaten at any of the restaurants mentioned in the LA Times article, feel free to share your opinion.
