Update: This UAL deal is now valid between Honolulu and both Houston and Dallas as well.
The East Coast isn’t left out of this latest round of Hawaii deals for peak summer travel. This started earlier today as a deal on Continental and their non-stop. Now instead it is available on United from now until next Spring, though some of the flights are code-share on Continental’s non-stop.
Details (between EWR and HNL).
- Cost: $492 round trip (all inclusive).
- Airline: United.
- Availability: Good with dates starting in July and going into May 2011. Holidays excluded.

we have never flown anywhere & we are looking for a nonstop flight to the kona side of the big island. we are looking to go march 27 & return on april 3. there will 5 of us. do any airlines let you put down a deposit & pay the balance 60 days prior to arrival? it’s really hard to come up with so much money for 5 tickets at one time. we would be flying out of california.
Hi Tammy,
I think the better bet is just to start saving, keep watching and get a great deal.

I think the fares out of Newark are long gone. I couldn’t get the other half to give me his available dates until this evening, and now nothing comes up for under ~$700 on any of the major sites or the airline sites. Too bad.
Thanks for the heads up, and please continue to share any deals you find from the East Coast.
Hi BitterB,
Yes, I checked and concur with your findings — the deals are gone. Deals often only last a few hours, then again, sometimes they last much longer. Of recent they’ve tended towards shorter duration.
Aloha, Jeff
Great! The ONE airline we DON’T have frequent flyer points on!
Does anyone know of any deals for NYC-HNL Aug8-Aug 25. I missed that day for 510$ round-trip and am now suffering because I’m hoping the fares will drop but am not sure. Any way of knowing if they will drop/make deals available? Maybe someone knows historically as you get closer to AUG did the prices drop for the above mentioned dats?
Hi Fillip,
I’m afraid that the great deals from NYC to HNL are no longer available. They were around for about a year. They could return, which in fact I think is likely. But that happening in your time frame isn’t as sure a bet. If it were me I’d wait until three weeks or so before departure to buy unless a deal shows up first. I’ll keep my eyes peeled too.
Sorry to not have better news.
Aloha, Jeff
I have never used the feature – but I think the AA site allows you to buy now pay later or something to that effect.
You may find a decent deal if you fly out of another airport – think Boston or Chicago, LA or whatever. Then on to Hawaii from there.
Subscribe to ALL airline emails and make sure you check their weekly specials – usually on Tuesday after 12 a.m. Start saving NOW so that when that special fare comes along you will have the $$ to jump on it. I have been able to snag $500-$550 per person fares from StL to Kona FOUR different times. You just have to be ready to buy when the fare comes along. The deals don’t last long. Often only a few hours.
Spend some time online so that you know what the ‘base fares’ are from major airports to Kona. Don’t keep checking over and over and over – otherwise you signal the airlines that there is interest in that route and they won’t ever lower fares.
Just get a feel for the regular rates from any airport you may fly to Kona FROM. There are always deals from NYC to Chicago or LA. But know what the ‘base fare’ is from NYC to Chicago or LA or any other airport you are considering – it won’t be a non stop flight – but those are rare or non existent nowadays anyway.
Also, don’t rule out flying to Chicago or LA – spending a night and flying to Kona the next morning. Maybe still be cheaper. Consider ALL alternatives.
Once you know the base fares – then subscribe to all airline emails and be ready to BUY when a real deal comes by.
For us – the base fares run around $800 – $850 pp from StL to Kona most times of the year. So, when that $500 fare shows up, I pounce on it. So far, it has worked beautifully. Hoping it will work again for our January 2011 trip! Who knows?
Hope these tips help. It has taken me years to figure it out – ha ha ha
