San Diego has regularly been L.A.’s expensive neighbor when it comes to Hawaii airfares. Change is in the air however and San Diegans won’t need to travel to L.A. to find good deals. In fact those from around Southern California should now look south in order to find some of the best deals. Downward pricing pressure in that market has been abetted of course by Alaska Air, with their upcoming service and promotional pricing to Maui.

Just did a search on AA’s site for early January – flex schedule – San Diego to Kona – it was nearly $400 EACH WAY! No deals for several days either side of my selected date. We won’t go unless we can get a RT for closer to $500-$600 pp. from StL. We will take a ‘wait and see’ attitude for now.

Hi Colleen,
San-Koa on AS for 1/11-1/18 is $508 RT all-inclusive, so it depends on dates and airline.

I’ve been checking fares from Washington, DC to Maui for a long while. I just booked on AA yesterday for $551 R/T. Wow! I’m happy with that. Fares are still good today. Not sure of the time parameters, as I only checked for my time in September.

Unfortunately, since we can only book our timeshare for a Friday, Sat or Sun arrival – we don’t have the luxury of picking midweek arrival to take advantage of cheaper airfares. Going midweek and then having to pay extra for hotels/meals/car rental just to get a cheaper airfare doesn’t compute. Also, hubby can only be away for a week.
We just have to wait for a weekend deal. We have been very fortunate the last 3 trips – booked for about $500 RT from StL each time. We will just have to wait a bit longer to see if we get anything close to the deals we have gotten in the past.
