We are going to Hawaii for the first time for some rest and relaxation (beach, sight-seings, good authentic luaus).
Should we go to the island of Maui, Kauia or Oahu?
Also, what is the road condition? We are not used to mountainous hi-way nor to fast freeways. Thanks.
Why don’t you pick up one of the Hawaii guide books at a bookstore or library and see what appeals most. You can’t make a wrong decision, and hopefully you’ll return to see the other islands later. Driving here is quite easy, so don’t worry.
Aloha, Jeff
Aloha Faye,
That’s a really good question but kind of like asking, what kind of car should I buy? It depends on what you want.
Oahu is great for first time visitors as it offers both urban options (Waikiki, Honolulu, China Town, USS Arizona Memorial, Swap Meet) and rural options (Ko Olina, North Shore, Turtle Bay). Great fun to watch the Surfers in Haleiwa Town (where I grew up) in the winter time. Totally different vibe between Winter and Summer.
Maui is great for your first time (if you don’t want any urban) or second time after you’ve done Oahu. It is the second most urban island after Oahu but a distant second as it is still pretty relaxed. A drive to Hana and swimming in the natural pools is a treat.
Kauai is great for your first time (if you want to feel like you’ve gone to Bora Bora, Tahiti or some other out of the way Pacific Island) or your third visit after Oahu and Maui. It is absolutely breathtaking and beautiful. However, they roll up the sidewalks after sundown so don’t expect night activities unless at a resort. Kauai is for hiking, finding hidden beaches, more of a natural/active type vacation.
Hope this helps. Alfred @ http://www.beachvillaresort.com
don’t forget the big island of hawaii–my favorite for beautiful scenery, great snorkeling, and variety–you can see an active volcano only on this island. Hawaii and kauai are the most relaxed–Oahu and waikiki have a lot of action, but are noisy and a pain to drive if you dislike freeways and traffic jams. Lots of great deals now and the crowds are down–I’ ve just got back from Maui which is nice too.
