Sheraton Keahou $119: Another Deal, Another Foreclosure?

First the Deal.
The Sheraton Keahou on the Big Island sits on 22 acres of oceanfront property near Kailua-Kona, on Keahou Bay. Its stunning location is an evening feeding spot for manta rays. The resort has 521 rooms and suites, each with private lanai. It features a 14,000 square foot pool, plus a spa and fitness center, wedding chapel and extensive meeting facilities.
The prices below reflect a purported savings of up to 65 percent:
- Price: $119 (garden view), $139 (partial ocean view), $179 (ocean view), $199 (ocean front)
- Dates: Valid for stays through September 30
- Book by: February 11
Next the Trouble.
The Hawaii press is reporting that the resort is in imminent danger of being foreclosed on by its creditors. The property’s main lender, Lehman Brothers Holdings, filed for bankruptcy last year. At the same time, due to economic conditions and competition, the hotel has seen its occupancy plummet to around 50 percent.
In the event of a foreclosure, the management company asserts that the resort will remain open. Unfortunately, only time will tell. Given the approximately 300 employees, we hope that the hotel can remain open.
As with the $61 Ilikai offer we featured recently, you might consider a backup reservation in the event of any unforseen problems.

Uh-oh — this is where my nephew is having his wedding next month. Hopefully management is correct that the resort will stay open if foreclosed.
I’m not finding the low rates mentioned in your email — I’ve checked the Sheraton Starwood site and several travel sites. Perhaps they’re for different dates than I’m looking at. Can you provide any links?
Thanks
The link, which includes the rate code, is in the first line. Click on the word “deal.”
Thanks — I missed seeing the link before.
As my father used to say — I’m blind in one eye and can’t see out of the other!
Other than the Ilikai, which I gather is still open, have you had any experience with other hotels in this predicament? Have any hotels in Hawaii been forced to close immediately upon foreclosure?
I would think it would be in everyone’s best interest, especially the creditors, to stay open.
Hi Duke,
No problem.
The foreclosures area a new and unfolding situation, at least as far as I can recall, here in Hawaii.

Aloha Jeff-
My husband and I just spent the night at the Outrigger Keahou Beach Resort on 1/19. I paid $130 with a real breakfast buffet — which was cheaper than my airline discount.
For your readers that are thinking about the Big Island – this is a great place/location. I’m not a fan of the Kona area (too busy and Lahaina for me!) but this is far enough south of the area – yet right in a central location.
The hotel is involved with the locals. We drove back twice for ukulele lessons with Rolinda. On Friday and Saturday nights the hotel bar – with cheap eats and drinks overlooking the ocean- offered unequaled live music. One night there were no less than 6 musicans on stage with I’m sure people I should know joining them on stage! The hotel welcomes all and does not shutter the locals like I have seen other hotel/resorts do. There are hula lessons you can just join in on, activities – all free free free ( a tip to your teacher is nice
). This place reminds me of coming to Hawaii 15 years ago before the heavy snob appeal set in.
I would be remiss not to mention the historic location and grounds that surround the hotel. They are recreating a historic heiau that seems to be as big as the hotel itself.
A popular beach is next door. Turtles are out and about. To top all this off – across the road is a nice shopping area that also has live entertainment on Fridays and Saturdays. We watched a delightful keiki hula when we were there. The shopping center has a ??? for you pupu pleasure! I can taste the kalua pork, brown rice and mac salad now…..mmmmm!
Last year, we went to Oahu only hoping to see more live music than what we thought was available on other islands ( we’ve been to all the islands several times). Boy was I wrong! The Big Island had the most music we have ever seen!
