  1. WE are looking to fly on United from O’Hare to Honolulu in December 2014. Direct flight. We can get round trip $1650 – but loads are still very empty on flights, would you book now or wait?

    1. Hi Cathy,

Not sure what dates you have in mind but I’m guessing over the holidays. Early in the month UAL prices are as low as $800’s RT. By the weekend before Christmas, fares are in the $1400+ range, with the cheapest departure dates being the 18th, 22nd and 24th.

      Aloha.

  2. I am looking to book a family trip to Hawaii. We are trying to decide on August or early December. There will be 5 of us traveling. We are planning on Maui. Do you have any recomendations on finding the best deal?

    1. Hi Katie,

You didn’t mention and we couldn’t determine where you are flying from. From August 15 on fares will be quite a bit lower than now, and the same will be true in December, but probably only for the first week or so. August is probably a safer bet.

      Aloha.

  3. I am trying to go from Lax to Kona on June 29 to ~ July 7 (days are kind of flexible). What could my cheapest option be and when is the cheapest day to buy? I am tracking the ticket prices and they are just fluctuating significantly on a daily basis.

    1. Hi Rachel,

Travel on Wednesday, Sunday and Monday yields a price of about $100 less round trip. Just over $600 on UAL. If you find one day is working better than another please let us know. We don’t find that to be true at least in Hawaii travel.

      Aloha.

  4. Hi,

My husband and I are going to Maui 10/21/14-10/28/14 from Seattle. I saw a decrease in flight price today and I’m wondering if it is a good deal. Total is $914 for both of us round trip. We have never flown to Hawaii before and have no clue what is a good deal 😉

    Thanks!
    Melissa

    1. Hi Melissa,

      Sorry for the delayed response.

Yes The $458 round trip fare is very good.

      Aloha.

  5. Aloha,

I am planning a trip to Maui for 10/13-10/24 of this year – those dates are pretty much set in stone. In late March, early April the flights were around $850 RT from DC (DCA and BWI) and then they jumped to well above $1000, dropped again for just a couple days a few weeks ago to $909 and then have not come back down and steadily inched up. Looking at the flights we want directly on the airlines’ websites, there are a ton of seats still available on every leg (we are taking a stop in PHX most likely) – this amount more or less hasn’t changed. Judging from other recent posts, things have been tough to gauge this year but in your expert opinion do you think there is a good chance the fares get back into at least the low $900s again?

    Thanks!

    1. Hi Joe,

Sorry for the delayed response while we were traveling in Europe.

Fares are already down in the high $800’s and early $900’s, which may be as good as it will get.

      Aloha.

  6. We are going to Hawaii for an exploratory trip in Sept. We are planning to move to the Big Island. We need to be there only a few days and wonder what days wold be cheapest to fly? Also should we look at fares directly from the airlines or on travel sites such as travelocity? I checked today and found the fares to be 943.00 per person from Portland, Or. to Hilo. That was thru my credit card rewards and it is ridiculous. Would it be cheaper to fly from Seattle?

    1. Hi Oma,

Seattle to Kona starts at $458 RT in early September which is very reasonable. Portland is about $50 higher.

      Aloha.

  7. I am planning travel for my employees to go from NY to HI to open a new account this summer. is there any advice you can give to me to help keep the cost down? Thanks!

    1. Hi Tara,

Come starting the 13th of August when airfares to Honolulu drop into the $700’s.

      Aloha.

  8. I’m planning to fly from SJC to HNL 9/10 – 9/16. Today, on Alaskan, the fares are $398 round trip, whereas Hawaiian (who I’d prefer) is going for $498. Do you think I should book now at $398 or would there be a chance of the price going any lower or Hawaiian going just as low?

    1. Hi Allysa,

The carriers do watch each others fares and will frequently though not always match them.

      Aloha.

  9. Hello,
I’m planning a wedding in Oahu in May 2015. I just realized that this happens to be Memorial Day weekend. Will it be more expensive to travel than the weekend before or would it be about the same?

  10. Hello, My daughter who is 13 really wants to go to Hawaii, doesn’t care exactly where, just wants to go hang on beach all day and night! It would be me =, my 13 year old daughter and 5 year old son, we would like to go 3rd week in July or 3rd week august. Need to be cheap!!!! Lol just mom and 2 kids, on a budget, Any suggestions or recommendations? Where to stay, fly etc. Not to picky, just safe and decent and beach please!

    1. Hi Lisa,

You didn’t state where you are flying from, and you aren’t sure where you are flying to. Therefore, in general terms, airfares will be lower starting in mid-August so that’s definitely the best time. Oahu followed by Maui are typically the least expensive in terms of airfare and have the most accommodation choices. Would suggest you consider a vacation rental as a way to moderate the cost.

      Aloha.
