  1. Hi! A friend of mine and I would like to go to Hawaii in May 2017. I’m going to read the articles you have but any advice while I’m doing that? We would be traveling from DC/MD/VA unless we go first visit some friends in NY (undecided but we have some time). We’ve never been but were planning it as a birthday getaway. Thinking of staying 7-10 days and trying to minimize cost where we can. Thank you in advance!!

    1. Hi CJ.

New York will most likely be cheapest and direct, followed by DC. That’s a great time to visit – in terms of both cost and weather. Currently about $750 RT on Hawaiian nonstop to Honolulu.

  2. Hi,

We are thinking of flying from Houston to Hawaii in August. Looking at the week of August 7th. We are open to days leaving and arriving. It will be 2 adults and child. Any suggestions and advice please? Thank you so much!

    1. Hi Cynthia.

For your late summer dates it might work better if you wait to buy. Currently however that week is running $1,000 to Honolulu, the following week drops by about $100 and the last week of the month by another $100.

      Aloha.

  3. Aloha! We are traveling from San Diego to Oahu the week before Christmas. Fares keep going up everyday. Is there a price drop before Thanksgiving or should I buy before its too late. Thank you!! Love this site!

    1. Hi Hollie.

If you can travel on 12/18-12/26, there’s a $716 fare on Alaska which is somewhat more reasonable. Otherwise, you’ll need to do one-stop via LAX to save about $70 which doesn’t seem worth the hassle. Looks like it will be quite expensive otherwise, in the $800+ range. May or may not come down. If it does, that might occur around Thanksgiving.

      Aloha.

  4. Hi, we will be spending 3-15 June 2017 in Kauai, traveling out of Denver. When would be the best time to buy? Last year the same trip was $900 per ticket (we purchased in the October prior). This time tickets are over $1,100 per person. Thank you!

    1. Hi Jennifer.

Tough one since you’re return is stuck in high season and your departure is a Saturday. So we’d consider it a high season trip where you should purchase far in advance (like now). Prices are a bit higher and not likely to go down for your dates.

      Aloha.

  5. I’m looking for an article on when it’s best to fly to Hawaii, and I see you reference to the “visual seven-step 2016/2017 guide to the Cheapest Time to Fly to Hawaii” but no article and no guide…please advise, thanks. Even better if you could email it to me 🙂

    1. Hi Jenny,

There are six images/boxes that when clicked lead to the six articles which comprise the guide.

      Aloha.

  6. Hi, I’m traveling Apr 8 to 15, both Saturdays, roundtrip from Los Angeles to Honolulu. What’s the price range for a non-stop fare that I should look for? Currently, I see 900s to 1000s. Thanks.

    1. Hi Jeanette.

$857 at the moment. Could improve, but may be last minute if it does. Premium for flying Saturday vs. mid week is about $250.

      Aloha.

  7. Aloha!

This site is awesome! I love getting Hawaii updates in my inbox…… It snowed at our house today so thinking about Hawaii makes me smile. I’m bringing the family March 25th for week in Maui. I already have lodging and have been watching airfare out of SLC, but it’s higher than I’ve ever seen it….over $800. Do you think it will get any cheaper? I know it’s Spring Break, just hoping to pay a little less.

Thanks for keeping us all updated and privy of Hawaii happenings!

  8. Hello!
We are planning our honeymoon the first week of August 2017… Trying to evaluate when the best time to purchase plane tickets might be? We are going from Dallas to Kauai.

And is there a way to find out what the past years prices were in August?
    Thanks!

    1. Hi Lauren,

As you can see from the post, August divides between high and low season. You can expect to pay about $1,000 in first half of month and about $200-$250 less for second half. Suggest waiting for either until spring since all of August has lower demand than say July, and availability should not be a problem.

      Aloha.

  9. Hi there!

Starting to look for flights from NYC (any airport) to KOA for Feb ’17; preferably around the weekend of president’s day. Any advice on when to look for tickets and the best (and least expensive) airlines that might have them? Also what’s your preference on direct to Honolulu vs layover in LA/SanFran?

    1. Hi Lauren,

We tend to prefer the nonstops, since you get the bulk of it over all at once, but really it’s personal preference. Checking now, for reasonable durations (under 15 hours total) you’re looking at about $900+. It could get better – but it may not. Fall prices are running about the same. Lots of choice in airlines and where to stop en route.

      Aloha.

  10. Hello! We are planning a trip to Kona mid-end of March from Seattle. I was wondering when the best time to buy tickets is? Alaska’s are still over $700 (we’ll be using a companion fare so need to fly Alaska:/)
    Thank You So Much!!

    1. Hi Michelle,

Looks like there is increased demand both the second half of March and in early April for spring break on that route. It could well come down later. Perhaps January. With a target in the low to mid $500’s.

      Aloha.
