  1. Trying to book flight from Southern California to Honolulu March 2017. Cheapest I have found so far is over $600! Any advice – will it come down later? Best airport to fly out of?
Thank you for your kind assistance.

    1. Hi Sheila.

You must be talking about 2nd half of month, which is falling in expensive spring break. San Diego has fares in the $400’s all month.

      Aloha.

  2. My fiancé and I are looking at booking a flight May 25th and coming back June 3rd. We are flying out of Omaha, NE and prices are in the 1,000s. We are going on a cruise that is departing from Honolulu from the 27th to the 3rd so our dates are not flexible. Do you think prices will increase for those dates and we should book now or wait until spring to book our airline tickets? Thanks for all of your great info!

    1. Hi Taylor,

Fares from Omaha to Hawaii are high generally. It looks like about $1,010. If you returned mid-week or had multiple connections, it would be cheaper.

Does the cruise company offer any airline component? Otherwise, you can wait and it might come down. In any event it isn’t likely to go up.

      Aloha.

  3. My family and I are planning a trip to Hawaii (Big Island or Honolulu) in February 2017. We are looking for flights under $575.00/Each Roundtrip with shortest flight (No More Than 15-Hours) possible. Also, what are some nice hotels in both areas for no more than $200.00/Night with breakfast included.

Any help with this trip would be appreciated – Thanks so much!

    1. Hi Jennifer.

You didn’t say where you are traveling from but your IP address says Houston. First on hotels, we suggested the Hawaii Revealed series of guidebooks as a great help in planning including accommodations. Also consider vacation rentals, which are definitely our preference.

Airfares mid-week in first half of February start at $674 on multiple airlines. Not likely that will improve.

      Aloha.

  4. Hello. Looking for a bit of guidance please and thank you.
We are planning a trip to Hawaii around the first two weeks of June 2017. (Looking to fly out anywhere from June 2 to the 6 and returning anywhere from a June 12 to the 16.) Flying out of Houston to Honolulu.
    My questions:
When is the best time to buy plane tickets?
How do you know when to pull the trigger and buy?
Is there a site that can give you an estimate/ average cost of the plane tickets?
Would it be cheaper to fly to the west coast then to Hawaii?

I found tickets for round trip, nonstop from Houston to Honolulu, depart Friday, June 2 returning Monday, June 12 for $744/ per person plus taxes, etc. Is this a good price?

Thank you so much for your help as I have been scouring the internet the past several months trying to find the best deal.

    1. Hi Mindi.

Currently airfares with any kind of reasonable connection are from mid-$800’s. Prices should ease for your departure date but your return will remain costly as it is in high season. So our best hope would be $700’s if you wait a few months for spring airfares to occur. Price range for Houston starts in low $600’s and goes to to $1200, depending on season, but you’ll in the range indicated almost without doubt. We do not see tickets for 6/2-6/12 for $744, but rather for $845.

Also be careful about very long layovers. Some can be a 30 hour duration which is a terrible way to start a trip. Also flying from the west coast won’t save much if anything and is very problematic with multiple tickets, possible delays/missed flights, security, etc.

      Aloha.

  5. Thank you for the great site!
I’m getting a lot out of it.

For a late-August vacation, when would you expect the best airfare – Chicago to Kauai?
What price range would you expect (or have historically been available)?

    Thanks!

    1. Hi Mike.

Thank you. Starting mid-August there are fares on Alaska with a pretty good connection for $827. That’s about as good as you’re likely to find. Otherwise, sit tight and there should be more of those as we get to perhaps March or after.

      Aloha.

  6. My family is looking to take a week long vacation to Hawaii in 2017… We’ll be flying out of Arizona and thinking of traveling around June… What type of airfare should we expect to see??? Would a different time of year be better to focus on??? Please help!!! Than you… 😀

    1. Hi Bryce,

Currently HNL is pricing in low $700’s all of June. That should come down to $500’s or less for first week of June only. If you’re traveling after that (either direction) then $700’s is about what you can expect. Definitely better to come before or after (not during) spring break or next fall. As an example, fares through early March are $498 RT as of today.

      Aloha.

  7. Hi.. We are planning a wedding 06/01/17-06/07/17 flying out of Salt Lake CIty. Tickets now are like $650.. i was wondering when the best time to book was? or if $650 was a good price. please and thank you for your help..

    1. Hi Jimmy.

Best hope price is about $500 and your dates are about $150 more. Try waiting a few months. No guarantee it will work and the airlines don’t know yet.

      Aloha.

  8. Hello

I am trying to Book tickets from Vancouver YVR to Honolulu HNL on 13 April 2017 to 17 April 2017. The price that I see now is 1950 (2 adults 1 child and 1 Infant).

Do you think I should book it now at this price or wait and see if I get cheaper tickets.

    Any inputs would be appreciated.

    Thanks.

    1. Hi JS.

So about $450 for your dates or about $100 less if you can leave and return a day earlier. Great prices on Westjet, doubtful they’ll improve.

      Aloha.

  9. Aloha!! We will be traveling from Memphis to Maui June 15-23, 2017 (Thursday thru the next Friday). Should prices go down in the coming months (currently hovers around $1000 RT each)..? Thank you so much! This is our first trip to Hawaii and we greatly appreciate your insight!

    1. Hi Kelly,

Yes, confirming that pricing – about $1,050 with a good connection. It probably will not improve at all by waiting and we’d actually suggest buying now. That is a very busy time here in the islands. Also lock in some accommodations and car rental.

      Aloha.

  10. Aloha,

I’m planning a visit to Maui in early-mid May 2017. Current RT ticket is $458 from SFO with Hawaiian Airlines. Do you expect the price to drop further? When is a good time to buy?

    Thank you!

    1. Hi Jenny,

They may come down by $60 or so if you wait. Don’t know when or for sure if that will happen.

      Aloha.
