  1. We are flying to Kauai in March 2017. We usually travel to Hawaii every 6 months or so. The airfare from San Diego to Kauai is seemingly more expensive 792 RT than any other time we have flown before including summer months on Hawaiian airlines. Are there any events going on in March I don’t know of?

    1. Hi Stephanie.

Yes – it is spring break. However we see fares as low as $398 RT in the first half of March, on Alaska nonstop.

      Aloha.

  2. Hi! er… Aloha!
I am looking to visit Haleakala National Park next year… I am visiting for a personal reason and wanted to go at the beginning of August for my mothers birthday. Do you think it would be wise to travel around that time or when do you think would be the fairest time to fly to Hawaii from Arkansas. I would even be willing to travel from Tulsa, OK or Houston, TX since I have family there.

    Cheers!

  3. My husband and I are hoping to fly from Cedar Rapids, Iowa to Honolulu on 8/31/17 and returning on 9/9/17. Flights with our preferred time of day and 1 stop on the way there, with 2 stops on the way home, are currently around $1000. Is it likely this price will drop at all? Is there a certain time of year that we should expect these prices might start to increase? I am just wondering how soon in advance to book.
    Thanks!

    1. Hi EO.

Not likely to improve. If you want to pay less you’d need to not fly on Saturday and have longer duration. Another options is MSP which could be up to $400 less.

      Aloha.

    2. Hello. My husband and I are looking to book a flight in mid march 2017 from JFK to OGG and wondering when you think the best time to book is? Flights seem to be averaging $900-1,000 currently. Do you expect the fares to drop as the date approaches? It looks like flights are lower in Jan and feb, is that due to the season or is 40-50 days out the “sweet spot” for booking flights?
      Thanks!

      1. Hi Jeanine.

The issue is spring break which is impacting the second half of March. Might or might not improve, but that isn’t likely. You can save a couple of hundred dollars (perhaps more during a sale) either before or after.

        Aloha.

        Aloha.

  4. Hi there! My fiance and I are planning a destination wedding in the Big Island towards the 2nd half of next year. We just came back from a wedding in the Big Island during Thanksgiving and as expected the fare was incredibly high. I’m looking to see which months airfares are the cheapest from NYC to Kona. 90% of the guests are coming from NYC and we’re somewhat flexible as to the wedding date in order to afford cheaper airfare for the guests. Thanks!

    1. Hi Caryl.

Not so much determined by month, but rather season, with fall and spring the least expensive times. Also winter before spring break. Then it just depends on how much the airlines want to discount that route. Best hope is just over $700 RT.

      Aloha.

  5. Hi

Our family is going to Maui leaving PDX around Jan 7th 2018. What should I bring looking for in fares?

    Thanks

    Mark

  6. Hello,

my husband and I finally going to Maui, after a LOT of searching we decide to go this December, but I am little concern about the weather
We are flying from Ottawa, ON…. so the last thing I need in my vacation is rain, do you think we should go a head and buy the tickets or it’s not worth spending all this money to stay in the hotel room most of the time

    1. Hi Faten.

There’s simply no way to know. But having said that, the holidays are one of the most popular times to be in Hawaii, and we 1) aren’t going anywhere else and 2) plan to spend most of the time off outdoors, hiking and swimming.

      Aloha.

  7. Prices from LA to Honolulu ridiculously high in my opinion at this time… I’ve tried April dates, June dates, July dates… everything is around $700/person or higher. For that price – or even lower in many cases – we can fly to most Western European cities. These crazy high prices LA to Honolulu are not justified. I’m not the sucker to pay an idiotic price for this… We’ve traveled on the same route in August 2014 and the price was less than $500/person. Considering the fact that the oil price was much higher back then, it adds to the fact that the current prices are insane. So it will be a “No, thanks” from me and my family… as long as the prices are so high, we’ll travel to Europe instead.

    1. Hi Ovi.

First half of April, and June/July are high season and have been $700+ for at least a quarter century if not longer.

In the past week we featured Los Angeles to Hawaii fares for just over $350 in low season.

Have a great time in Europe.

      Aloha.

      1. Thanks ! While it’s true that in 2014 we went to Oahu during the 2nd half of August, I still think the prices are not justified, especially given the current price for oil.

  8. My family is going to the Big Island for two weeks from July 8 – 22 , 2017. We are leaving from Chicago, Indianapolis and Fredericksburg. When is the best time to buy the tickets and is it best to fly to Honolulu and get a local flight over the Big Island.

    1. Hi Dick,

Hardly any difference in price flying to Honolulu vs Kona so suggest Kona from Chicago. About $1,200 which is to be expected for your peak of summer weekend dates. Doubtful that will improve and availability could definitely be an issue. Suggest buying air, accommodations and car ASAP.

      Aloha.

  9. Aloha!!!! I would like to book travel to Maui from Denver at anytime within the next year. We are extremely flexible and are looking for the best/least expensive flights. Do you have any recommendations for the least expensive time to visit? Any insight would be greatly appreciated! Thank you so much for your help!

    1. Hi Kim,

There are $503 RT airfares from January through early March on Virgin America. Reasonable connection and great price. That’s about as low as you’re going to find. Should be more good prices after mid-April through May and then again in the fall.

      Aloha.

  10. Aloha, I just found this site and its looks very helpful. My family and I were looking to fly from Chicago (Ohare) to Hawaii. The dates we are looking at are June 23, 2017 – July 1, 2017. I am looking at fares and they are about $1000. What is the lowest price that we might be able to get for the dates we are planning to travel. We have a family of 6 and the airfare will be a major cost. Thanks in advance for your help.

    1. Hi Robin.

You didn’t indicate which island so we’ll base it on Honolulu. $1100-1200 on your dates with nonstop or good connection. That’s summer and price is to be expected. Otherwise come visit during second half of August which will yield better prices across the board.

      Aloha.

    2. You are actually considering paying $6000 to fly your family to Hawaii on what is basically a domestic flight?!? For $750/person (possibly even less if you check the prices early in the week) you can fly to Paris or Milan, you save $1500, you rent a car and go on and drive to the French or Italian Rivieras.

      1. OVI-you’re probably right, but maybe these people would rather go to Hawaii. I’ve been to Europe and Hawaii-it’s just a matter of what you want to do. Info’s fine, but don’t be judgemental.
