  1. Aloha,

We are slated to fly to HNL arriving on 2/11/18 and returning on 2/18/18, after the previous couple of plans fizzled. With our timeshare booked, we are getting there one way or another.

Even though we live 10 minutes from LAX, the fares are suggesting we fly out of San Diego, and even ditching our traditional Hawaiian Airlines and using the savings for a more lavish meal on the island.

Our friends, who live in Philadelphia, have accepted our invitation to join us and I want to ask you, the experts, if there is a viable route from there to Honolulu without the crazy connections and layovers. Their saving grace is that in addition to our home, they have family in LA and can stretch their vacation a few days before and after to either fly out of LAX or join us in San Diego to fly together. In summary, does an affordable sane route exist between Philadelphia and Honolulu? Thank you for your insight.

We are excited to return to Hawaii once again, and this time with more friends in tow.

    Mahalo,
    Alan

    1. Hi Alan,

From Philadelphia, expect to pay about $850-$950 during February, with a duration of under 13 hours and a 1 hr layover on the west coast. Multiple airline choices. That’s about as good as it will get. From San Diego about $500+ on your dates exactly or change to mid-week or 1-stop to reduce price further. LA is $550-$650 right now but target is about $100 less.

Moreover keep watching prices on these, especially west coast, as they will go down from where they are today.

      Aloha.

  2. Aloha!

Hello I am using Early March of 2018 to gauge the airline price four four from Dayton, OH (DAY) to Kauai (LIH) for a trip in May 2018. I don’t have much flexibility in dates and it looks like leaving on a Friday vs. a Saturday can save money. Dates would be May 18th leave on Thursday June 1st. I am flexible on staying 12 nights vs. 13 if it would save a material amount. It looks like American is my best bet seiing about $1,090 round trip, but any other suggestions or hints would be most appreciated such as are my travel dates considered economy time for flights?

    Mahalo!

    1. Hi Barb.

That is an expensive route any time of year. Prices are largely route and convenience dependent. And yes expect to pay north of $900. Best time to buy will probably be fall or after. Sorry to not have any better ideas on this one.
      Aloha.

  3. Are there any consistent deals from Chicago to Hawaii? Went last year for about $800 per person roundtrip but I watched for several months. Is there anything out of Indianapolis?
    Thanks for your help.

    1. Hi Joe.

Both cities aren’t well priced in terms of flights to Hawaii. Best deal we’re seeing at the moment is $715 on Virgin America starting early September – to Maui.

      Aloha.

  4. I am looking to go to Kona from Louisville in early April of 2018, when do you think the best time to look for flights would be?

  5. Beat of Hawaii – I love your website and the periodic emails I receive! Please, if you can offer some thoughts/advice on my particular travel planning situation, I would greatly appreciate it!

I’m planning a trip to the big island for my family of 5 plus my parents for February 2018. We already have a condo booked, thankfully, so between that and the kids’ winter break (week of Presidents Day) our dates are not very flexible. We’ll be flying to/from Seattle on Thursday Feb 15th, and returning the 23rd. I’ve been watching fares for a few weeks already, which seem to be anywhere from $350 to $1100 each way, or $700 a $2200 per person round trip. Some of the flights are at perfectly awful times, some with 2 connections, some are direct. Is this the best we’re likely to see? If we really want mid-day direct flights (i.e., Alaska or maybe Delta) or one quick layover, should I book now or is there typically a ‘sweet spot’ for booking mid-February flights? Do you have suggestions on a ‘target’ round trip fare I should watch for?

So many questions! Thanks in advance for your help! Looking forward to more great info from Beat of Hawaii!

    1. Hi Kate.

Your dates will cost $700 to $800+ for nonstop. If they come down in price, that could happen at point with a target of $550RT. Personally suggest waiting until that happens. Give it some time.

      Aloha.

  6. Please advise me when the best time to purchase roundtrip airfare from SMF to LIH departing 8/30/2017 and returning 9/9/2017. My dates are firm because I have a rental commitment for those dates. I appreciate any hep/suggestion you may have.

    1. Hi Cathleen.

Currently low $600’s and target is maybe $50 less. So you might just buy now.

      Aloha.

  7. I am planning to travel to kona in mid fubuary either out of Minneapolis, MN or Fargo, ND. The date I’m looking at leaving is febuary 13 and returning the 19. Round trip out of Minneapolis is anywhere from $830 to $900 and out of Fargo is around $1,100, just wondering if it’s worth booking now or should I wait to see if the prices will drop some.

    Thanks!

    1. Hi Andrew.

For mid-February we’d suggest waiting. That having been said, the best price you’re probably going to find with a fast connection is about $800. So keep an eye out for that whenever it occurs.

      Aloha.

  8. Going to Kona from Cincinnati in November. How far out should I book the flight for the best rate?

  9. Aloha!

Thank you for all the wonderful information on your web page. It has been so helpful.

Please share some advice on when to purchase tickets from the West Coast (SFO or OAK) to Lihue in early November 2017?
    Mahalo!

    1. Hi Hop.

Fare sales for fall should start in the next month or two. Stay tuned.

      Aloha.
