    I’ve been watching airfare to island hop while visiting Maui May 15-23. The RT price from Maui to HNL is $134 right now…..is this fair? or will it go down after spring break?

      Your return date is clearly in high season, so it may not get any better. You may do just as well to secure tickets sooner rather than later.

    Some friends and I want to go to Hawaii for New year. We want to leave on Christmas and come back January 2nd 2016. We are leaving from Boston. Is this smart? Is everything going to be way overpriced? I dont mind spending a little extra. How much more is it to go at this time in the year?

      Hi Tom,

      If you fly on the holiday days themselves, prices are usually much better than at any other time during that period. It is hard to say how much more it will cost. Perhaps up to double what you would pay if you travel during the fall season.

    Would have loved to travel when kids are off of school but prices are too high. So deciding to pull them out of school, which gives us quite a bit of flexibility. We want the whole trip to take about 10 days. Our preference is Kauai but we are somewhat flexible with which island.We are 2 adults, 2 teens, 1 age 10). You stated that flights can be as low as $300 in fall. I just found flights for $430 for oakland to kauai with one stop in Malibu. What would you think are odds I can do better than that by waiting? And is there a big risk in waiting of prices going up?

      Good plan – at least price wise. If you remain flexible, you may see better pricing from Oakland, which has a lot of deals. Kauai tends to be somewhat higher than Maui or Oahu, just FYI.

      There is no harm in waiting for fall travel.

    Hello- planning on first week of Sept out of Oakland to Kauai for 403 each RT. I’m a huge planner and can’t imagine myself waiting a few more months to book my flight. Is 403 a good deal or should I wait a little longer? Thank you!

      Yes that makes a lot of sense. You might beat $403 by waiting but not by much. Suggest buying and not looking back.

    I am looking to travel to Hawaii with my son and I am new to all of this. I am flying from Detroit. I would like to go for 10 days. I am a school teacher so I am able to travel December 18 – Jan 3, beginning of April, or anytime mid June through mid august. Could you please tell me when would be the cheapest time of year to fly and when would be the best time to book it. Thank you

      It is pretty well outlined in the post already. None of your dates are the cheapest. If you can travel mid-August for 10 days that’s good, but not early August.

      Otherwise it is going to be fairly expensive, especially from Detroit.
