  1. Hi, My family and I are planning a trip to Hawaii for New Years through early Jan. we are also island hopping. Right now for two islands it’s $640 round trip. Should we wait to book maybe in August or do you think this is a good deal now?

I forgot to mention. We will be flying in from Oakland to Kona -> Oahu > oak and this is through Hawaiian airlines

    1. Hi Marianne,

Given the uncertainty over Hawaii airline pricing, we’d suggest buying now. January fare sales, if and when they occur, wouldn’t start that early.

      Aloha.

  2. I’m looking to fly out of Vegas to Maui on June 30th anytime after 7pm.
Not finding any flights that leave that late.
Am I missing something? Do flights not depart out of Vegas to Maui at that time?
    Thanks

  3. In response to Jose: flights to Maui are cheaper out of San Jose rather than SF/Oakland. At least as of a few days ago when we booked. Got ours for $548 RT.

  4. I’m wanting to fly from San Fran or Oak to Maui at the end of June and the cost ranges from 800-900$/ticket currently. Any chance they will drop in the next month or two? Would you suggest buying now. Why are tickets do high this year?

    1. Hi Jose.

That is not significantly higher than normal for your time period – perhaps $100 to $200. Suggest buying now.

      Aloha.

  5. Looking to Fly in Dec of 2014 and I am wondering what airlines offer the best prices? Are those prices typically found in a booking period 3-4 months prior to travel rather then buying now in March?

Which all inclusive resorts are the best for sights/activities &the cost? Staying one one island and taking a flight to another island is an option we are open too.

    1. Hi Jennifer,

Are you talking about over the holidays or the first week of December? Huge difference. If you’re planning on the holidays, suggest booking now as it will likely be sold out. For the first week of December, you might wait until the fall until some sales arise.

      Aloha.

  6. Hi! I’ve been waiting on purchasing airfare for LAX-LIH May 15-22 2014, hoping for prices to go down. I thought by now they would, but they haven’t budged much in the last couple of months. Early January we saw fares around $575 at the lowest, now they generally hover around $699. Think there is still a chance of sales coming up? How likely is it of fares going up even more? Thanks!

    1. Hi Jenny,

We’re in the same boat, need to buy tickets for late April and have been waiting. We are going to continue wait until the beginning of April, so that’s the best suggestion we can offer to you as well. This year is particularly challenging with airlines.

      Aloha.

  7. The best fare I’ve found so far for IAD-OGG leaving on Aug 18, returning on Aug 27 is $915 RT with one stop in LAX. We’re a family of five. Snag it or sit tight?

    1. Hi Rachel,

Yes, that’s the best fare around your dates no matter how you do it including nearby airports on both ends. The situation isn’t good and it is very hard to know what the airlines will do. If you can’t stand the suspense, perhaps best to buy now. Otherwise, just hang in there and hope for better pricing to appear during the summer.

      Aloha.

  8. Hello! Do you know how empty a flight needs to be for an airline (especially looking at Hawaiian Airlines) to reduce the prices? Also, how far in advance of the flight would this happen? I’ve been waiting to book a round-trip flight from JFK to Honolulu in late-June. The prices are very high and they have remained the same over the last month. Thanks!

    1. Hi Christine,

Do not expect any discounting from current prices for late June. That is the most peak of travel times here. The answer to your question isn’t a simple one, but will address that in a future post in terms of the airlines’ price management.

      Aloha.

  9. You are very generous in your responses to other posters, so I thought I’d shoot you my situation. We are invited to a wedding in Maui in mid-June. Just looked today (flying out of LA) and prices seem very high at a minimum of $950 no matter what day of travel. Did we miss our chance for a cheaper flight? Seems LA to HI should be cheapest of all cities since it is the closest route. Any information would be extremely helpful.

    1. Hi will.

LA is grim and the airlines are in lock step to keep prices very high.

Feel like a drive? $528 total on Delta from San Diego to Maui mid June.

      Good luck.

  10. Hi! My family and I would like to take a Hawaiian cruise in December 2015 because it is all-inclusive. However, the flights from the east coast to Hawaii are very expensive. Do you have any suggestions as to when we should travel to Hawaii in order to get lower prices on the flights from the east coast? Is December a good time or should we travel in November?

    1. Hi Sonya.

November is more reliable but not around Thanksgiving holiday. Fares of $700 or less are likely. Also typically great fall weather.

      Aloha.
