It all depends on the hotel, and the supply and demand for your dates.  Last week we just posted an Orbitz discount deal, which you might have already seen.

I always check the hotel discount sites (such as those we mentioned), as well as places like Expedia, Travelocity, etc. and see what discounts I find for the hotel on these sites.  

Before booking anywhere, I call the property directly, and ask what discounts (including through affinity partners) might be available for the desired dates.  

If you have a hotel in mind, I'll look too and see what I find.
