Autumn is simply the best possible time to visit Hawaii. The weather is at its best and we have the fewest visitors.
This morning, there’s a broad Hawaii airfare deal from UAL dubbed United Aloha Autumn Adventure. It includes some great prices and others that are just fair. So be sure to do your homework and compare. An example of one of the best offers is:
- Colorado Springs – Honolulu $190 (one way plus tax). Fare matched by American.
Here are other sample fares (one way plus tax):
- Chicago – Lihue $323

- Los Angeles – Honolulu $188
- Los Angeles – Kona $228
- Los Angeles – Lihue $193
- Los Angeles – Maui $228
- San Francisco – Honolulu $163
Terms:
- Travel dates: August 17 through November 17 (Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays)
- Advance purchase: 21 days
- Maximum stay: 30 days

With this so called fare war – the LAX to Kona trip would be $450 + tax pp. We flew from St. Louis to Kona on our last THREE trips (2005, 2007 & 2009) for $500-$550 per person TOTAL – including tax.
That’s what we are waiting for. Under $600 is a fare sale for us. I just priced out our trip on AA and United (we would go the 2nd week of January and it was over $900 pp. Way too much. We can get a week at an AI in MX for that. So, if a better fare sale doesn’t doesn’t materialize – we will be forced to go to Mexico in 2011. We prefer Hawaii, of course!
Hi Colleen,
First, thank you for being our most website’s most frequent commenter. This makes 40!
The way the summer has been going, it seems like there will be more than usual discounting this fall/winter. That could change, but certainly we’re seeing much more than expected. So hold on to your lei — we want you back in Hawaii.
Aloha and mahalo,
Jeff
It’s still cheaper for those flying out of Oakland to Kona in October to book with Hawaiian. Otherwise we’d get sent from SFO or SJC to LAX and then Kona and on the way back the extra added bonus of an additional destination.
Wow – 40 posts! Someone has been counting! I must be spending way too much time online! I’ll post this and find something constructive to to :0)
We prefer Hawaii – we just love the people, the pace and the fact that everyone speaks English, ha! Love the beaches and the fresh seafood. What’s NOT to love about Hawaii?
We can’t believe we have made 4 trips and are planning a 5th – never thought we’d ever get to Hawaii even once!
Hoping to see that FAB airfare any day now that will bring us back in January. The inter island fares are the pits.
We snagged a great car deal in Feb. of this year – but our sons are being taken to the cleaners on their rental. They just decided to come recently. We keep watching – maybe something will turn up that is better.
Now, if we could just have someone guarantee that we will have SUNSHINE for our week – so far we have been running about 50/50 on weather. RAIN really does RUIN a Hawaiian vacation.
Hi Colleen,
You’ll be the first to know when we see a STL or neighboring fare. What other airports usually work for you?
Did your sons try using Hotwire for the car rental? That often works well. What are their dates/locations (if it isn’t too late).
Aloha,
Jeff

STL is our main route outta Dodge (oops, St. Louis)
Any other requires quite a drive. We are already an hour from Lambert Airport in StL.
I have usually found our great fares in Aug or Sept – so just a little bit longer should do it…………. :0)
