United Hawaii Flight Cuts Latest in Growing List

This morning UAL announced it will slash its Washington DC to Honolulu non-stops from seven times per week to just once starting in August. This is a huge blow to regional Hawaii travel from the US east coast. The daily flight lasted less than one year.

We were excited to see the DC to Hawaii route added last year, soon after Hawaiian announced its New York to Honolulu flights. Unfortunately, however, both DC and NYC routes have suffered from a disappointing lack of demand which resulted in today’s sad news.

Hawaii flight seasonality becoming a growing trend.

Last week Allegiant stopped flights from this August on all but three Hawaii routes. In our interview with Allegiant, they indicated some of these flights will be resuming at a later date (Christmas/New Year holidays). We’re awaiting an update from Allegiant regarding Hawaii flight resumptions which should occur later this Spring.

Previously, Alaska Air announced Hawaii flight cuts from its schedule, when inadequate demand resulted in unsustainably low airfares to the neighbor islands.

Will New York area flights to Hawaii be cut next?

United continues to fly daily service from Newark to Honolulu while Hawaiian flies daily from JFK. Highly competitive airfares on both New York City routes, however, have been as low as $400 (or even less) round trip, which is not an acceptable level. Neither carrier has thus far indicated they will add New York flights to the growing list of those with reduced schedules. We would not be surprised to see either United, Hawaiian or both eventually reduce the number of days per week they fly from New York.
