US Air Cancels Charlotte/Honolulu Nonstop

Updated 4/5:  This has now been confirmed by the carrier.

The US Airways East Coast to Hawaii non-stop will soon reach the end of the road.  No public announcement has yet been made.  Starting September 8, however, it is no longer possible to book reservations for the flight on the US Airways website.  Apparently, the US Air company newsletter corroborates that the flight has been axed.

When we first wrote about the flight last June, and again last month, I expressed my belief that the route could not be a success for US Air.  We’re sorry nonetheless that it did not work out.

With the apparent demise of the Charlotte to Honolulu non-stop flight, are there any other options besides Atlanta?

Also, is there any way to choose a flight by selecting a specific aircraft? I’ve never flown on the legendary Boeing 747 and would like to find one going to Hawaii.

Delta used to fly a 747 out of Atlanta but I don’t see it on their website any longer. They run the Airbus A-330 for most, if not all, of those runs.

I’ve flown the A-330 on several trips to Hawaii out of Minneapolis on Northwest before the merger and enjoyed the plane. It’s quite roomy, but the 747 has a certain charisma about it that defies logic. Is the 747 as good as its cracked up to be?

I love your website! I check it almost daily for anything new on flight, hotels, etc. about Hawaii. Keep up the good work!

Hi Dave, and thanks for writing.

Sorry, but no 747 service anywhere domestically, as far as I know. Most of the flights to Hawaii seem to be 737, 757 or 767 at this point, with a few other variants mixed in.

      Aloha, Jeff

United sometimes runs 747s (all international config) to Hawaii. I’ve never had the luck to be on one of those flights. But I’ve taken the 747 many times to Europe and a few times to Asia and I like it. Especially on the upper deck (business class on United). But quite frankly, if you fly economy, it really doesn’t matter a whole lot what aircraft you’re on — the (lack of) legroom (seat pitch) and amenities like AVOD are more important than what the tube is shaped like :)

I can’t BELIEVE this was not a money-maker for USAIR. I flew the route just last month, it was a fabulous flight and the plane was super comfortable; AND both ways had an oversell situation and they asked for someone to get bumped. WTH do they do with their money-with our money?
