Watch for our Plate Lunch Specials
Here’s a photo I took on the Big Island. The Beat of Hawaii team will be returning there on Sunday.
We have many great posts coming up that I want to tell you about. I’m calling them our Plate Lunch Specials to whet your appetite. Be sure to subscribe to our feed via E-mail or RSS so you don’t miss out on our grinds.
Here’s a sampling of the Plate Lunch Specials we’ll be delivering to your table:
Trip Advisor Expose. They won’t publish our negative review on a Honolulu hotel that is marketed by their affiliate. We’ll be posting the review that Trip Advisor doesn’t want you to see and asking, “How objective is Trip Advisor?”
Oceanfront Hotel Room on the Big Island for $69 night. Will this be a hit or a miss? We’ll find out this Sunday when we check in for 5 days. Starting March 1, we’ll be posting our hotel review and Big Island tips. We plan to travel on a budget and we’ll show you how.
Cheap Hotel Find in Waikiki: For under $100 a night you can stay in this renovated hotel with designer furnishings. We were guests two weeks ago. Look for our review and additional money saving tips for Honolulu.
Kauai’s New Shoreline Bike Path: We’ll be taking you on our high definition video tour that shows the progress so far. The finished path will be 16 miles long and stretch from Anahola to Nawiliwili.
South Pacific on a Franc. French Polynesia doesn’t have to be expensive. We traveled there via Hawaiian Airlines recently. For less than $100 a night we had a cottage on the lagoon. Maybe our post will inspire you to add French Polynesia to your Hawaii itinerary.
Finally, with our new HD Camcorder we’ll be able to insert video into some of our posts. It’s a new way to travel with the Beat of Hawaii.

I look forward to the tasty specials.
By the way, I’ve been to Tahiti, Moorea, and Bora Bora, which was quite a different experience compared to the islands of Hawaii.
Aloha Sheila,
I’m in the kitchen right now cooking up a plate! That’s interesting that you’ve been to French Polynesia. My upcoming post in March will primarily focus on the island of Huahine.
It’s been two years since I’ve been to Big Island (and it’s only 250 miles from Kauai). My favorite place to stay is the Hapuna Prince Hotel. This time we decided to try something different and stay at a $69 oceanfront hotel. We thought it would make an interesting post about budget travel on the Big Island. I’ll let you know how it goes.
Aloha,
Rob
P.S. I’m sorry we didn’t get to meet at Blogworld in Las Vegas!
Aloha Rob,
You’ve got one of the best views on your lunch plate with that post - the loukout at Waipio Valley on the Big Island. It’s an easy but magnificent drive there, and any visitor can enjoy the spectatcular views, even the non-hikers!
You got me curious about the $69/nt. oceanfront hotel special! Don’t think availability will last long with that kind of kama’aina price. A hui hou. Pua
Hi Pua–
Believe it or not, $69 is the regular rate (Hawaii residency is not required)! I just posted our review of Kona Tiki Hotel which has all of the details.
To reach this lookout of the Waipi’o Valley, go to Honoka’a and take Hwy 240. Don’t forget to stop at Tex Drive-In for malasadas (Portuguese doughnuts dipped in sugar). It’s at the 43 mile marker near Honoka’a.
Pua’s right–it’s a spectacular view!
Rob
Hi Rob - You were at BlogWorld, too? That was my first blog conference.
We didn’t get to Huahine. It will be interesting to get your insight on it.
Now I’m off to read about your $69 BI stay.
I am SO looking forward to the Trip Advisor expose!! We rented a house in Kona last year and the rental website had where you could review the places you stay. I thought I was rather nice considering some of the inconveniences but the owner refused to approve it. So I went to TripAdvisor and they said only the owner of the rental can ask that their rental be listed. I thought the whole point of TripAdvisor was to inform travelers of the good and the bad?
So I reviewed it at my site.

Thanks for the story on the Kona Tiki, I’ve always wondered what the rooms where like there when we stayed at the Royal Sea Cliff!
Angie,
Thanks for visiting today. Now that we’re back from Big Island, we’ll be releasing our Plate Lunch specials over the next week. I also appreciate your comments about Trip Advisor. Our experience with them has made us think twice about the honesty of their reviews.
I’m glad you liked our Kona Tiki post!
