What UAL, Mokulele Deal Means

mokulele2Mokulele has signed a new ticketing and baggage agreement with United Airlines.  The bad news for the consumer is that we can’t earn miles.

United also has the same agreement with Island Air and Hawaiian for inter-island travel.  If you book a United flight in conjuction with these two carriers, however, you’ll earn 500 United miles each way.  You can also redeem United  miles on both carriers for free inter-island tickets.

According to a Mokulele spokesperson, they are hoping to add a mileage agreement with United in the near future.  Mokulele is the only inter-island carrier without a frequent flier program.  Until such a program exists I don’t think we’ll see United miles soon.  Currently Mokulele offers 500 Alaska miles on their flights.

The good news for Mokulele is that their flight schedule will now appear on the United reservation site which will increase their traffic and visibility.  Mokulele has a similar agreement already in effect with Continental, WestJet and Alaska.

Until miles can be earned by the consumer, however, mile hungry United passengers may want to opt for Hawaiian and Island Air for their connecting inter-island travel.
