I also make it a point when booking to ask for what I want-- upper floor, specific view, even just asking for something nonspecific like "one of your very nicest rooms". I also never hesitate to let them know if it is a special occasion, like a birthday or anniversary, and ask for an upgrade if it is available. That once got us from a standard room I paid $99 for through SkyAuction to a $1500 villa at the Arizona Biltmore Hotel in Phoenix, which made for a most excellent anniversary! Good hotel advice.
