Why Hawaii Tourism Is Rebounding

Aug 02, 2010 No Comments by

There’s good news for Hawaii from the state’s Hawaii Tourism Authority. Thanks to our visitors and great deals, traffic to the islands has increased for seven consecutive months. Average daily spending is up 16 percent too.

We’re glad to play a role in this success, especially Jeff’s scouring for the best deals. Beat of Hawaii was quoted in Sunday’s Garden Island Newspaper about the increased visitor traffic on Kauai.

The Stats.

All of the Hawaiian islands performed better over last June. Oahu: 18 percent; Big Island: 9 percent; Maui and Kauai: 6 percent. The state saw a 14 percent increase over last June which amounted to 625,522 arrivals.

  • Hawaii’s all-important West Coast visitors spent $359 million; a 9.6 percent increase from 2009.
  • Japanese citizens are returning once again to Hawaii, and spent $147 million, or 41 percent more than in 2009.

The Reasons: Key Factors according to Jeff.

1.  Airline competition.

From the most important West Coast markets, airline competition has resulted in frequent deep discounting and lower fares overall.  Many new direct flights have been and will be added, mostly to and from non-traditional markets. This includes more services to the neighbor islands and services from secondary mainland airports like Orange County, San Diego, and Oakland for example. Repeated summer airfare sales have often cut costs by 50 percent or more.

2.  Hotels and car rentals deals.

The reduction in summer (and upcoming Fall) airfare costs is being matched by hotel and other accommodations due to competition and a severe oversupply of rooms. Even Hawaii car rentals have seen unusual high season discounts.

What this means for you: a great opportunity to visit the Hawaiian Islands.

Expect to come to Hawaii for less than normal even during the peak travel periods. It’s a fabulous time to watch for deals here on Beat of Hawaii and seize them quickly using the best tools.
