  1. Another moving of the goalposts. Last year I cancelled twice. Am planning on visiting this August and November. Will see if these guidelines will change again. I suspect as much. Beginning to feel like I am in an abusive relationship. The best course of action may be to get my vaccination and return to Mexico and hit up Italy in 2022. Or just hook up the RV and hit the road again. Strange times. May be years before things shake out in the islands.

  2. Aloha,

By the way the vaccine rules apple, as my wife and I have a trip planned in mid-June for Kona, since I got my 2nd Covid 19 vaccine on Feb 15, I would be a month outside the three month window, while my wife will have had her 2nd dose just inside the 3-month window. Does this mean that I would need to get a Covid test done within 72 hours of our departure for Kona or fear quarantine? Hopefully, this will change.

    Mahalo,

    1. Hi Michael.

We just don’t know yet. There will be more data coming out soon that might give a further indication to the CDC about that 90-day thing. And we too hope that it will be much longer since that isn’t workable for travel planning.

      Aloha.

  3. This is not fair for front line workers who had there 2nd dose in the beginning of January I am suppose to be going to hawaii April 29th everything is already paid for

  4. BTW… Just to add to the difficulty of coordinating vaccination within three months of Hawaii travel (and putting yourself at risk in the meantime)… This is important to know…

If for any reason you receive a steroid shot (i.e., bad back, bad knee, etc) you cannot get the Covid vaccine within two weeks of that shot – not two weeks before and not two weeks after the steroid! Steroids deplete the effectiveness of the vaccine.

So on top of all the other scheduling nightmares, if you are ancient as I am and get steroid shots for just about every joint in my body….

    1. Hi Barbara.

Thanks for that. It’s the first we’d heard about steroid shots but it makes sense.

      Aloha.

      1. BOH: I’m having to get (have already gotten) steroid shots for my newly discovered arthritis in hip, elbow and back. And over and over the doctors and nurses ask “have you received the covid vaccine”. I thought it a curious question until they explained to me that steroids interfere with any vaccine unless there is a two week gap in time.

  5. The concept is fantastic! HOWEVER>>> As difficult as it is to obtain a vaccination right now, trying to plan it and be within the three month window will be even more difficult to coordinate. My state has a registration system. I’ve been registered since December with no vaccination in sight! Because I am one year short of age 75, my eligibility group hasn’t even yet been opened and there is no timeline to anticipate. My age group (65+) is in “Phase 1C”. At this point the state is only administering vaccines to “Phase 1A” folks! “Phase 1B” is 75+. I could actually luck out since we’re not coming to Kauai until mid-July but that’s a heck of a challenge to meet!

  6. ALOHA,
I wanted to take a moment to say thank you for your informative and relevant website. Having lived in Hawaii and doing business in the islands it’s very important to me to stay informed with what’s happening in Hawaii. Your doing a great job keep up the good work !!!

    Best Regards,

    GY.

    1. Hi Gary.

Thanks very much for saying that, we appreciate it. Hope to see you back again on Beat of Hawaii and in Hawaii soon.

      Aloha.

  7. I received my second shot on Feb 5, so a 3month time frame is approximately May 5. Does that mean that if they open to the mainland on May 1 I don’t qualify a a vaccinated person and still have to go through all the testing and or quarantine steps? So what good was getting the vaccine to travel?????

  8. Too many rules, exceptions, requirements, potential unexpected changes… All so we can travel to Kauai – a beautiful island that may or may not have operating restaurants, T-shirt shops, Luau’s, shave ice stands or tours – all things we enjoy when we come to Kauai. Too much uncertainty to make the trip. Thanks for the information though!

    1. Hi Barry.

You’re welcome. For better or worse, there will be many changes ahead both here on Kauai, in Hawaii, and in global travel.

      Aloha.

      1. There must be a computer answering these comments. No answers are ever given. Just thank you’s
What is the use of commenting. Just a fake web site to let people vent.

          1. I have read the rules I will not comment until Feb23 when I have my 2 Nd shot . I am going to ask the doctors at the clinic what they know about the life of my vaccination. How long is it good for. I will let you know so you can pass it on to Dr Green.

        1. DENNIS T… There’s a very simple answer – get off the site if you find it of no use! Many many many of us have benefited from the information we gather here and will continue to do so in spite of you!

  9. I fortunately will receive my first vaccine 2/27 and the second 3/03
which allows me to travel April 20-27 due to me being within the 3 month timeframe just announced. Can I get excited anticipating I can travel without paying $205.00 for the Covid test within 72 hrs. of my last leg of departure from DFW with my fully vaccinated Covid documents? Thank you BOH. You are my coffee buddy each morning as I read travel updates.

    1. Hi Pamela.

Thanks for joining us for coffee! That isn’t clear, but there is a reason for at least some optimism in that regard. More to come.

      Aloha.

  10. After researching the reference to a three month period for the vaccine I found the following information with regard to the three month reference to the vaccine:

“However, vaccinated persons with an exposure to someone with suspected or confirmed COVID-19 are not required to quarantine if they meet all of the following criteria†:

    * Are fully vaccinated (i.e., ≥2 weeks following receipt of the second dose in a 2-dose series, or ≥2 weeks following receipt of one dose of a single-dose vaccine);
    * Are within 3 months following receipt of the last dose in the series; and
    * Have remained asymptomatic since the current COVID-19 Interim considerations”

I did not see any reference to the fact that the three month period for those vaccinated only affects individuals with exposure to someone who has symptoms or a confirmed case of COVID during the first three months after completing a vaccination series.
