  1. We had our second dose of the Pfizer vaccine on Feb 11 and a flight to Maui from the mainland is booked for June 25. Since we will be out of the 3-month window, does that mean we will need to get a 3rd dose or booster to comply? Is that even possible with the current vaccine supply situation?

I have not heard of any discussions regarding re-vaccinations once someone has completed the sequence. Is it safe to take the Johnson & Johnson or Moderna vaccines if you been previously vaccinated with Pfizer?

    1. @Russell K
First, looks like we will have a vaccine glut in this country by summer, at least for adults.

Second, personally I would not mix the vaccines. The vaccines have been emergency rushed out fast enough, you wouldn’t want to add another unknownbv variable to the mix. that said, there were early studies that said it seemed Ok to mix Pfizer and Moderna together, at least early signs. I don’t know what current observations are on this.

    2. My question also! I dont think its likely to happen….we have no idea how long this one really lasts or when we will need/be able to get another! The 3 month window isn’t going to be easy to plan around!

      1. @Timmie P
Yes, takes some planning and some luck.

For our upcoming summer Hawaii trip, we just started the implementing the vaccine part of the plan. 1st of four shots taken. 2nd has been scheduled to meet the 3-month window. 3rd shot “window” is on the calendar in May to happen. Crossing our fingers 3rd and 4th happens as planned – but all looks green now since we are expecting a vaccine glut by then.

        1. Shot 2 done. Waiting for shots 3 & 4 in May, and vaccine supply is looking better by the week. We may even sneak our kids’vaccines on in May as well of we are allowed (they are >17 yo).

  2. My wife and I getting our 2nd shot this month, planning on a trip to Maui in September will we be good to go without any other restriction??

    1. Dear Adalberto, Hawaii is working on a vaccine passport right now. It isn’t official yet so hopefully having proof a person is fully vaccinated will be enough to by pass a test. For people who don’t want to be vaccinated Hawaii will leave the option of doing the test in order to travel to Hawaii.

  3. I will be fully vaccinated on March 10 – will I need a COVID test for May 5-10 travel to Oahu? If not what do I need to bring to the airport for proof? My signed and dated vaccine card?

    1. As of right now, being vaccinated has no bearing on anything. You are still subject to the same rules for entering the state. You will need to be tested according to the rules in place.

      1. That is sort of ridiculous, don’t you think? What’s the use of being vaccinated if you still have to take 2 tests! Doesn’t make sense at all.

        1. @Cheryl. To your point:

“That is sort of ridiculous, don’t you think? What’s the use of being vaccinated if you still have to take 2 tests! Doesn’t make sense at all.”

Simple answer, really. And it is NOT ridiculous at all. Let me explain.

All our three US COVID vaccines now in play have been EUA’d (Emergency Use Authorized) – meaning that they have only been tested to work to prevent serious illness due to COVID-19 BUT there was not enough time given the scientists to test/understand how long the vaccines work for against this “novel coronavirus” (literally means a virus new to man). Also, Pfizer and Moderna are using a new pharmaceutical technology call mRNA (messenger RNA) in this battle, so there are unknown variables with these viruses as well. J&J’s vaccine, on the other hand, uses proven vaccine technology (I believe) so scientists may have a better idea how long that one lasts over other two mRNA-based vaccines, if at all because J&J’s vaccine is also a EUA vaccine.

So, in the bigger scheme of things, all of this is rather reasonable. This is not a ridiculous situation at all, rather it is MIRACULOUS the world has come up with so many vaccines in such a sort time to fight a horrific disease, one so strong and deadly that even a leader of the most powerful nation in the world way under estimated its strength (“it will just magically disappear (in two months)”) and even today, lots of people in this country still does not believe how deadly it is.

          1. GERHARD and JWI… Whether you can transmit the virus after vaccination or not is still open for debate and in fact, over the last few days, there has been the infancy of the opinion that you cannot transmit after vaccination.

          2. Sorry not true. The only thing the vaccine does is keep you out of the hospital. Nothing else. Sometimes I have the feeling that the facts are being disguised to achive higher rate of vaccine acceptance.

    2. Dear Cheryl,I’m planning my life long dream vacation trip to Oahu next year!!!♡♡♡ I’m getting very excited & I can’t wait. I’m a teacher & now I’m fully vaccinated. I’m waiting on the vaccine passport because I don’t want to be stressed out about worrying about the test result not coming back in time!

  4. Hi We are traveling to Maui in May and are vaccinated and will get our pre-travel covid test done, since a vaccination card isn’t enough. Traveling from Florida keeping my fingers crossed all works out. Miss Maui and planning this trip has been a huge stress.
    Thank-you for all your information.

    1. Hi Sharon.

Thanks. Please let us know how it all works out on your upcoming trip to Maui.

      Aloha.

    2. Dear Sharon, that is exactly why I’m waiting for the vaccine passport because I don’t want to stress about the test not coming back in time! I’m a teacher so I’m fully vaccinated now. I’m planning my life long dream vacation trip to Oahu next year & I’m getting very excited!!♡♡♡

  5. I am anxious to travel to Maui and Kauai in August from Maine. I have had my 2 shots in February. I have paper verification of my shots and dates. Will this work for travel in August? Only allowing a 3 month window for shots and then travel is quite small. Would a negative Covid verification within 72 hours plus shot verification work? I have made my reservation for the two islands but have not made plane reservations yet. I am anxious for further updates on allowed travel.

    1. Dear Judy, Hawaii is working on the vaccine passport right now but it ain’t official yet. I’m waiting for the vaccine passport because I’m a teacher & fully vaccinated now. Another reason I’m waiting is because I don’t want to stress about worrying about the results coming back in time! I’m planning my life long dream vacation trip to Oahu next year!!♡♡ I’m getting very excited & can’t wait!

  6. Travel within 3 months if vaccination? Who can coordinate the two vaccine shots, the flight date, securing all the necessary certifications to be shown to Hawaiian officials, and then get lucky enough to not have the policy changed and the rug pulled out from under you before you depart? Forget Hawaii for the foreseeable future with it’s draconian requirements. There are too many other places that are open to risk losing one’s accomodations in HI to roll those dice. Don’t go to HI again until it’s completely open again and those in charge come back to their senses. Vote with your money.

    1. Dear Brenda, I’m waiting for the vaccine passport because I don’t want to stress about not getting the test result back in time! I’m a teacher & now fully vaccinated. I’m planning my life long dream vacation trip to Oahu next year!!!♡♡ I’m getting very excited & can’t wait. My itinerary is already completed & now I’m starting my hotel research.

  7. We are hoping to get to Kauai in April, departing from San Diego. My husband and I have both been vaccinated. I would like to know what regulations will be in place for us. Do we need to get tested before we leave? How many days before travel do we need to get tested? What test do you accept? How do we show proof of test.

    1. Same rules apply to you as they do to everyone else. Being vaccinated at this time makes no difference.

    2. Can you please update us Darcie, we finally gave up our early April plans and changed our trip to September becauseit seemed too risky for our family reunion of 15. Best of luck though.

    3. Dear Darcie, as of right now a person must supply a negative covid test result in order to travel to Hawaii. They are working on a vaccine passport but it isn’t official yet. I’m waiting for the vaccine passport because I’m a teacher & fully vaccinated now. I’m planning my life long dream vacation trip to Oahu next year!!♡♡ I’m getting very excited & can’t wait. I don’t want to stress about the test result not coming back in time.

  8. I urge the Governor to follow the science re vaccinated people. This suggestion would avoid the timeline imposed for the PCR test (and expense). Permit vaccinated folks after two weeks to enter HI with a “rapid test”. This should protect against the “spreader” issue while taking off the pressure of the PCR timeline. Mask use should cover any residual risk.

Otherwise, HI is simply ignoring the benefits of vaccination. We would love to spend $$ in HI, but Cancun will work. Please pass on this comment to the powers that be.

    1. As the light at the tunnel is finally visible, your approach seems reasonable.

The Gov needs to be able to pivot his perspective according to what is happening at the moment – it just seems he is stuck in one point in time (in the past) where current protocols worked. Right now, these protocols are a little overkill, and if trends continue, it becomes more overkill with every passing week.

I agree to lessen the grip of some of the current rules (like the 72 hr PCR to maybe 96 hours), but keep (like mandatory masking when people are around) and maybe add some easier to check off one’s list (instant/rapid test upon arrival for those vaccinated > 3 months) with the intent of still minimizing the spread.

A little of many things adds up to be big – power in numbers against the pandemic

  9. We are in the process of getting our vaccinations and will be complete by April 5 so is a May 6th vacation going to be ok without testing before we fly to Maui? Also we are bringing two grand children with us one 15 and one 14 will they need to test prior to flying with us? Thank you so much
