  1. I’m glad I got to visit a couple of years ago. for now Hawaii has disappeared over my horizon but hopefully not forever.

  2. My comment is: 1) In the past it seemed that a large number of people went to the park, just to hike. This group usually just had back packs. A smaller group came to Kee to swim and snorkel – this group usually has beach chairs, snorkel equipment, food/waterwater etc. I think there should be a distinction in how these 2 groups can get access and what they will need from shuttle services. Their needs are different. 2) Blocking out visitors will effectively destroy the businesses up there – people who have worked hard to feed people up there. 3) Parking in Princeville is already terrible. People taking a shuttle will need a place to park and there is no room.

Conclusion: This plan needs more planning and data input. How many residents and tourists use the park on a daily basis? Why not have an alternating schedule: certain days for residents/ others for tourists.

The beaches in Kauai are free and accessible. Please keep them that way.

    1. Aloha Karen!

Your suggestion for Kalalau hikers is golden! Make access for hikers via shuttle only & part of the trail permitting process.

Mahalo – what a great idea!

    2. I agree. Families come to the beach. They will have gear and will there be room on a shuttle. Hikers usually have a pack. I do agree that hikers should be shuttled in, keeping parking spaces for beach goers. What about people with handicap pass. Moving onto a bus might be more difficult than staying in their car. Are there any considerations for that situation?

  3. Aloha! Do you have any information about Limahuli Garden reopening? We stayed in Hanalei for a week in early March. Everything was open except for some of the food trucks…and Hanalei Dolphin fish market was open, but not the restaurant.
    Mahalo.

  4. Aloha beat of Hawaii,
I have followed your articles about the on going changes coming to the north shore. Was wondering if you can still access tunnels and find a place to park. Used to be down that little dirt road. Maybe 10 cars, early morning. Best time and loved the no crowds.
Do you know if this is still available?
    Thanks the Duck

    1. Hi Duck.

No we don’t know what we’ll find at Tunnels when we head up there next month. We plan to report on it at that time however.

      Aloha.

  5. Wow! We will be there the last of May and first of June, so no Kee Beach for us! It our favorite snorkeling spot, and we also like hiking the trail. Oh well, Kauai is such a beautiful place with so many incredible places to see! I can’t wait to visit paradise again!

  6. Love the idea of a shuttle from Princeville. But I hope a large parking lot is in the plan for Princeville… what is there currently is often full. The good new and the bad news is that Hawaii is so very popular and the travelling population is growing exponentially.

  7. When is your best guess to when the Kalalau Trail will open and camping permits will be granted for visitors?

  8. We will be on Kauai May 6-9. We were hoping to go hiking on the Kalalau Trail. Are there other hikes in the area we can still do?

  9. Good luck with that…. about the only good news in this article is limiting the population at Ke’e and a shuttle. I blame IG for effectively ruining these sacred spots and my advice is if you are doing it for the gram, don’t tag out your locations, please. 5 years ago the secluded beaches of Princeville were lovely and unpopulated. Unfortunately, popularity in pictures has drawn crowds of people that, not always, trash the beaches, park illegally, and make driving conditions to and from the North Shore a nightmare. I’m sure the residents enjoyed the solitude while it lasted despite the logistics nightmare. I was there during the flooding last year and the aloha spirit was amazing. Mahalo for the article. I chose Big Island this year, but Kauai is my heart. LIVE ALOHA

    1. Great. It is bad enough with tourists stopping their rental cars on curves to take a picture, imagine the death toll if they did this on electric bicycles
…. unthinkable (unless) they mark off a cycle lane but the road is not wide enough for that nor are the bridges. Shuttle is best idea.

    2. Aloha! We are going the first week of May. In the past I did many times the Kalalau trail. This trail was mynumber 1 in my bucket list for this trip. My question is how far you can go north by car the first week of May?
      Mahalo.

      1. Hi Rocio.

That trail will not be open in May, period. Maybe sometime in June, but that even seems unlikely to us, to be honest. You can drive to the end of the road, as the federal government is requiring that, but you will not be able to park anywhere in May, that’s for sure.

        Aloha.
