  1. Any details yet on how the online system will work for making a reservation to go to the beach? I have been a Poipu Beach property owner for 20 years (Visitor since 1968) but the State won’t give me a Hawaii State ID unless I give up my CA drivers license… so even though I own a car and a home on the island, will I still be treated as a tourist or what type of identification will they require to receive a permit? Thanks and mahalo!

    1. Hi Scott.

Good questions but we don’t yet know the answers. This is a complicated and fast evolving situation.

      Aloha.

  2. I have a great idea.
Let’s make a big parking lot up at Mark Zuckerberg’s place up by Princeville!

  3. I’ve been traveling to Kauai every year for the past 13 years. It has been so disappointing to drive to the end of the road the last few years and not be able to park. I’m from Minnesota where we have the Boundary Waters canoe area, many state parks, and even county parks that require a fee of some sort to enter the park. Vehicals are restricted and even turned away when the park is full. A permit is required to enter the Boundary Waters with strict rules of what you can bring in, where you can camp, and where you can enter. Break these rules and you are fined and not permitted to enter again. I guess my point is, when we are blessed with a peice of paradise it is our responsibility to protect and treat that place with the respect it deserves, no matter the grumbling and inconvenience it may cause. I also wonder if, like the Boundary Waters, the more difficult it is to get there, the more aware we are that this is truly a special place.

  4. I’m very upset with Kauai’s decision. Only the rich and privileged get to enjoy the beaches on the North Shore. They don’t own the beach. Stop blaming just the tourists. Tourists like me always park in the correct parking spaces and what we carry to the beach leaves with us. We only leave footprints. I get tired of us all being lumped together. Kauai is being so unfriendly it’s sad. I’ve seen the locals first hand that don’t clean up after themselves in fact they are worse so stop blaming only the tourists.

    1. MV, all I can say is really! Many places in the US have had access severely limited to protect them from overuse. It’s very selfish to think only of the now and not the future.

  5. I have been visiting Kauai North Shore for 32 years. We love and respect the people, the island and we completely understand the need to make changes based on impact. We will have a wonderful visit, and I think before people act “put off” we should all consider the loss to Kauai and North Shore residents and the part we can play in helping in recovery efforts.

  6. Parking in Princeville Centre is a nightmare now. Park and ride? Why not from the Princeville Airport?

  7. Aloha! Thanks a lot for your work and help. We will be on Kauai May 20-25 staying at Princeville. We were hoping to go hiking on the Kalalau Trail and snorkeling / surfing up north. Do you think it will be possible to do the trail? Thanks for your response.

    1. Hi Alberto.

Definitely no Kalalau trail. And not too likely any snorkeling either. We haven’t heard specifically about Tunnels, but it is very doubtful for May and perhaps beyond.

      Aloha.

      1. Me and my family will be staying in Princeviille in July any idea on how and where we could pay for a pass to Ke’e Beach ? It sucks that you have to pay now but I’ll gladky pay if it means rebuilding paradise.

        1. Hi David.

We really don’t know how this is all going work, including the how to’s and when’s. Hopefully we will know more and will publish that as soon as we do.

          Aloha.

  8. This bothers me on so many levels. I watched the 2 hour community meeting on youtube. The disgust for tourists is very disturbing. They are doing everything they can to keep people out of Haena and the State Park. They are making a permit system to hike Napali and a shuttle to enjoy the northern beaches (for the tourists). If you are local, its free or subsidized (no permit needed) and you will have a special parking lot. It just doesn’t feel very inviting and I decided to take my family to Big Island this year. Hiking Napali and exploring the northern beaches was always a big part of our Kauai trip over the years.

    1. Have fun on big island, it’s your choice to come here or not, everywhere in the world has fees…why should kauai be any different? I went to California back in ‘96 parks had “non-resident fees” what makes haena different?

      1. I agree. I think every state that sells fishing or hunting licenses has a resident fee and a higher non-resident fee…same for state parks..resident and non-resident. As a non-resident of Kauai, I would expect to pay a higher fee.

      2. It’s not the fees that bother me. It’s primarily the entitlement of the Haena residents. Hate towards tourists. You realize that most people out there aren’t “Locals”. Check the price out real estate out there. You buy your way in.

    2. Big Island is nice, but choosing to go there just cause you can’t have your way in the north while there are plenty of awesome Kauai attractions in the east and south is simply a cop out.

    3. Then go to big island you obviously dont consider kayak sk important if you’re complaining avout about paying a fee to go to north shore. It’s not your home your opinion should make no difference in anything the locals decide to do to protect their land and keep it beautiful.

    4. Big Mahalo to you. We have too many tourists on Kauai. Traffic is horrible. Tourists come for a visit and stay. We have the largest homeless population in the state. Please take your selfish family to Florida.

      1. Please don’t send them to Florida, we have enough already. As an aside, non-residents pay more here too. I wish our state was working as hard to protect the natural resources.
        Thanks!

        1. LOL, I have to laugh. The scorn and disgust with tourists is universal. Depends on whose ox is being gored. We’re in north Florida, and the word “tourist “ here is getting to be a dirty word. They come to our beaches and leave trash everywhere, get drunk, pee of the boardwalks, etc. traffic is horrendous and prices are out of sight for homes and condos. And our island is being turned over to developers who drain the wetlands and put up buildings that look like they are constructed of pick up sticks. Have they never heard of hurricanes…duh? We love Kauai and were planning a trip in November but it sounds like the road and park issues are not even close to being resolved. Ke’e and tunnels are our favorite places to visit. Having a hard time deciding if we will come this year. We stay for a month, and were planning another month in June 2020. I wonder if the road, traffic, and access issues are affecting revenue for merchants and the state?
