  1. Hi there, we are travelling from New Zealand to San Francisco, Vegas, then on to L.A arriving 26th September. We have decided to add on Hawaii on our way home which would be 10th October – 15th October. This is our first time to America including Hawaii – there is myself, hubby 21 year old and our 16 year old. Who would you recommend to fly with? Also any recommendations for accommodation or anything else would be greatly appreciated 🙂

    1. Hi Sonya,

On accommodations and things to do, we suggest the highly acclaimed print and online series Hawaii Revealed.

Sounds like you’re looking for a one way LAX-HNL ticket for mid-October. It would be best to wait several months for best pricing. Otherwise nearly $400 one way at this point. From LA currently would suggest Hawaiian Airlines. We’ll see if Virgin America comes online by then.

      Aloha.

  2. Hello,

I am planning a trip from the SF bay area to Honolulu for a week around the middle of June this year (from the14th-21st). There will be 6 or 7 of us going and over the last week or so, the lowest fare I have seen is Oakland-Honolulu at around $600/person RT from Hawaiian Airlines. Is is worth it to wait for prices to drop (and if so what price should I wait for?) or should we buy the tickets now since summer is a popular time to travel.

    Thanks!

    1. Hi Brett,

$600 for those dates is a bargain. It is normally $700 or more. Not sure you can expect better, although the bay area is somewhat unpredictable this year. Suggest buying now.

      Aloha.

  3. Hi, we fly to Osaka, Japan (KIX) each year from the SF Bay Area. We were told that if we from from Oakland (OAK) to HNL then onto KIX we could save over a direct flight which we found to be true. However, friends of ours say that they wait until Feb or March to buy the flights since Hawaiian airlines tends to have a February sale which we have not found a lot on. Do you recommend that we buy our multi-city flights (to extend our layover to three days) now or wait a month/monitor?

BTW, we plan on leaving June 13th to HNL then onto KIX on June 17 and then back to the Bay Area on July 21st.

    Thank you for this site.

      1. I thought you recommended waiting a little on fares from the Bay Area due to increased competition; or was this for Spring flights?

        1. Hi Brook.

If it is $100 or more off normal, in summer, that’s a great opportunity. We said it is fast changing and not predictable.

          Aloha.

  4. Hi, we want to go to Maui late June from Phoenix. Airfare is currently $830 per person RT.
Should we wait to purchase tickets or is that the best price we will see.

    1. Hi Anna.

Some days are prices about $650. Not sure that will improve any further if you wait.

      Aloha.

  5. Hello. So a friend and I are looking to travel to Oahu from March 12-19 from New York. We were wondering when the best time to buy the tickets may be and at about what price they may be at? If I recall, I believe you may have mentioned that Feb might be the best time to look for deals for March.

    1. Hi Trevor.

From $775 with a stop or from about $1000 nonstop due to spring break. Doubt that will go down.

      Aloha.

  6. The two of us want to vk on the beautiful island of Hawaii can you tell me when it would be cheapest to fly when you to book our trip we are in cleveland ohio but we can also fly out of akron ohio which ever has best prices

    1. Hi Crystal,

Honolulu and Maui usually though not always have the best airfares. There are some $750 fares in late February and early April. Otherwise it mostly is $900’s+. There will be probably be more fares in the $700’s for later in the spring (after spring break) and again in the fall.

      Aloha.

  7. Aloha!
I live in Denver, we truly don’t get much for deals for Hawaii do we?! I will be traveling with 2 kids, I am curious to know, is it less expensive to fly to the big island or to Maui?? We will be looking to travel end of July/beginning of Aug. I can sometimes get cheap flights to Las Vegas, would you recommend flying out of Vegas for cheaper rates? So sorry, one last question, which of the 2, big island or Maui, would be a great place for kids?
Thank you so much for your help!

    1. Hi Alyssa,

It is the same price to Maui or Kona. From about $900. Either is great for kids with lots to do. Your correct, Denver suffers at this point in relation to Hawaii. With new planes coming to most carriers, that could change in the future (but not this year).

      Aloha.

  8. We have 11 nights from October 4 – October 15. We are planning on staying only 7 nights and want to depart October 4 and return October 11. Flights are currently around $450 from OAK to HNL.
    Will the fares go down?
Should we choose different dates within our 11 night window?

    1. Hi Rachel,

It’s nearly $40 less if you don’t return mid-week. Otherwise might improve if you wait as per post details.

      Aloha.

  9. I have a very flexible schedule and I’m trying to come see my sister any time from now till summer (end of May). When would you suggest is the best time AND, more importantly I’m trying to figure out the cheapest city that fly to HNL. I currently live in Dallas but, I’m all over the country for work so, I can easily get to a different airport. Just wish work could take me to Hawaii too 🙁

    Thank you!

    1. Hi Ashley,

SF bay area is the cheapest. Otherwise San Diego or Seattle. We’ve already had some good spring deals and more are definitely on the way. Dallas doesn’t participate in deals really, just seasonal fluctuations and very rare fare wars.

      Aloha.

      1. I am trying to find a cheaper than $600 ticket from SF to Maui the third week of March. Are there smaller (no frills) airlines that fly that route? Am I dreaming to think I will find anything for less than $600-700 round trip?

        1. If you fly out of OAK on 3/21 there are a number of possible return dates with total cost of high $400’s to low $500’s. Nonstop.

          Aloha.
