  1. My fiance and I are flying to Oahu at the end of October for our honeymoon. We are using points to get a flight from Chicago out west on a discount carrier then flying out to Honolulu from there.

    2 Questions…

1.) Judging from the text, Oakland and San Diego seem to be the best options for a west coast departure. Is this still accurate?

2.) Looks like we should be looking to book in the summer. We found some that arent terrible now, is it too early?

    1. Hi Bill,

We just updated the cities to include Los Angeles now that there is an additional airline. Oakland and San Jose are great. San Diego follows these.

Fares are mostly in the high $400’s and we’ve seen them for up to $150 less in the off season very recently. So the decision to buy or wait depends on your threshold for the pain of not knowing. Spring to summer will reveal more if you care to wait.

  2. will plan to travel to Honolulu and Big ISland in October 9-16.What is the cheapest way to do,HNL first then inter island to Big Island or vice versa. There will be 5 of us from Phoenix, and WHEN will be the cheapest time to purchase tickets?

    1. Hi Petite.

You might be able to do two one ways plus one inter-island and thus not have to back track to Honolulu. That would work best logistically and probably not have significant financial repercussions. Wait until spring to summer, as indicated for somewhat better pricing, while keeping in mind that Phoenix doesn’t get great deals.

      Aloha.

  3. Hello,

I am planning to travel to Princeville , Kauai..July29,2016 to August 5, 2016..I was wondering is Kauai a nice island and How is Hanalei Bay resort?

When is the best time to purchase airline tickets and average price? OR Are they any good deals on flights?

I am flying from Detroit, Michigan (DTW) .

    THANKS

    1. Hi Rita,

All the Hawaiian Islands are wonderful in their own way. We suggest the highly acclaimed guidebooks on each island: Hawaii Revealed.
Hanalei Bay Resort has a wide range of accommodations – from great to not to good. You need to investigate the unit you are considering.

Fares are about $1,200 since it is peak summer season. Low season on that route can be $700 by comparison. You can try waiting but not sure it will improve (likelihood of improvement 30%).

      Aloha.

  4. Hello,

We are planning a trip from IAD to HNL August 16-22 (currently $900 per person RT). What would be a decent price for airfare?

    Thank you!

    1. Hi Cathy,

With one or two stops perhaps as low as $700’s. The nonstop tends to run a couple of hundred higher. Not sure if it will come down. You can try waiting but the downside is there’s limited nonstop inventory. If that isn’t an issue then wait. Otherwise you may need to pay.

      Aloha.

    1. Hi Susan,

Too early to book until next week. Looks like there might be some $250 or so airfares coming. Or you can wait until fall and see what happens. Should not be a problem waiting.

      Aloha.

  5. I live in Portland Maine, East Coast, trying to search for deals to Kona or Kauai for end of February 2016. A friend told me about your website. Enthusiastic to have a good resource now. Any advice? Many Thanks.

    1. Hi Carrie,

No great deals unfortunately. About $900 to either island. These are mostly two week advance purchase fares. Otherwise price is higher. We checked Boston, and there’s nothing worth it from there either. It might improve but isn’t likely.

      Aloha.

  6. We are looking at a family vacation (2 adults and 2 teens) this summer, probably 3rd week of August. Very flexible on which island/airport. What would be your recommendation given that we like outdoor adventure (hikes, etc.), beach/snorkel/swim time and some shopping? That said, we’re on a budget so if the big island is typically less expense to fly into .. or Maui or ..? we are very open to any location.

    1. Hi Jennifer,

Maui has probably the best mix of things compared with other islands and if often the cheapest to fly to/from. For island trip planning we use and suggest the online and print guidebook series, Hawaii Revealed.
      Aloha.

  7. We will are planning a trip to Kauai from Orlando, FL in mid to late October. We are trying to figure out if we should fly to LAX or to SFO to get to our final destination (Kauai). Any input on which city would be cheaper to flight to Hawaii out of? We currently have reservations to fly from Orlando (MCO) to Los Angeles (LAX) via Virgin Airlines and paid $260per person/roundtrip but seems to me that flights from LAX to OGG are more expensive than from SFO to OGG. Could you give me any advice on this matter? Is it way to early to even be purchasing any tickets at this point? Thanks in advance!

    1. Hi Rich,

There will be more sales from Los Angeles but they will not be to Kauai. Only Honolulu at Maui for this year. Next year things may start to change for Kauai with more flights and more competition. Having two separate tickets is problematic if not with the same airline as you might have to retrieve luggage and go back through security. Plus you risk the first flight being delayed unless there is a true stopover.

Right now fares for October start in the $830 range. If you choose to wait, the possible savings is about $200 if it materializes.

      Aloha.

  8. We are planning 10 days on Oahu, leaving anytime after June 6th. We have 8 people flying out of Chicago and one flying out of Phoenix. Is it best to wait until May to purchase our tickets? Thank you

    1. Hi Greg,

We don’t see much possibility of your dates coming down in price. Starting at about $950 on the nonstop, which isn’t bad for that time of year. You can try calling the group sales desk at United or American just to see if they’d do anything for you. Usually they want 10 people flying together.

      Aloha.

  9. We have accommodation reservations in Maui August 13-25 and have been searching air fares. Is there likely to be a better time to purchase airline tickets (LAX-OGG) than right now? I read it’s best to purchase early and then read fares for late summer may drop in early June. Your advice please. Thank you.

    1. Hi Gary,

Would be best to wait given the new airline on that route. You may have to wait until early summer – so as look as you’re okay with that, it should work out favorably.

      Aloha.
