  1. We just bought a timeshare so plan on flying to Maui end of February. I just read that flights are going down. This February I paid 780 for both of us. Hopper is predicting 657 per person for my dates. 2/23-3/2. Do you agree or think I can get it much cheaper if I wait till fall or later? Thanks! HOPPER says it will go down between now and then but by only $98.

  2. Hello,

We so appreciate your advice! My family of four is planning a trip from OAK to OGG October 2-9. We’re watching flights and trying to figure out when it will be best to purchase. A non-stop is pretty crutial since our kids will be 2 and 5 years old. Should we wait a bit longer to purchase flights?

    Thank you,
    Christina

    1. Hi Christina.

$400 nonstop now. We don’t really expect that to improve, although it is a possibility. You can try waiting a few months to see what happens as availability should remain good.

      Aloha.

  3. I’ve been looking for airfare from Chicago, IL to Honolulu since Jan. 2018 for our trip September 18-25. The prices have not gone down ranging from 750-950 round trip per person.
Please tell me when will the airfare drop for last half of September?
    Thank you.

    1. Hi Linda.

Currently low $800’s nonstop or save about $100 with long connections. Could improve by up to $100 by waiting. Probably not more. In next few months.

      Aloha.

  4. HI Becky, Looking for round trip flight from San Antonio, TX to Lihue, Kauai please,to attend a family wedding, leaving San Antonio around end of June, flying back around end of july. THANK YOU SO MUCH!

  5. Cheapest flights I ever saw from Chicago was on ATA back in 2003. A one-way from MDW to OGG was $199. Hoping that Southwest will bring similar fares back to this area.

  6. I can’t wait for these low fares! I almost got the last $99 price, but wasn’t able to find a place to stay. Mahalo for these frequent updates!

  7. Hello,

    Aloha!

We are a family of 4 traveling to Honolulu 10/2-10/10 from Phoenix. Even mid-week round trip prices for all of us is just under $3000 in low season, which seems crazy to me. Do you see it going down at all?

    Mahalo!

    1. Hi Courtney.

Looks like price has room to drop by up to $200 RT if you want to wait. Looks good for some reduction in next few months. No rush for your dates.

      Aloha.

  8. Aloha,

My family of 5 will be traveling to Maui from Portland Oregon October 30- November 6th. I’m seeing tickets on Hawaiian airlines for $457 nonstop from PDX to OGG. Since we are still 6 months out I’m wondering if we should wait or book now?

    Thank you,

    1. Hi Pam.

While that isn’t a bad airfare, it looks like potentially could drop by up to $100 or so if you wait. Might happen in next few months.

      Aloha.

  9. We are so excited to be headed to Maui Feb 23,2019 and returning March 8,2019. Flying out of Nashville to Maui and prices are $1,900 + now.We would like to connect with one stop to west coast. Should we wait still 10 months out?
Thanks so much for your great Hawaii updates.

    1. Hi Ken.

It is about $800 on American with a good connection. Not sure it will improve if you need to fly on Saturdays. For mid-week it could drop later by up to $200 or so. IF you are going with your dates, suggest buying now as that is actually a very good price.

      Aloha.

  10. When will American make improvements on plans from Phoenix to Maui? It’s our only non stop options and the planes seem much older.

  11. There will be 6 of us traveling to Maui from Denver 12/14-12/21 per timeshare dates. Has been around 1100 round trip. When do u suggest buying & what is a good price for that time of year? thank you

    1. Hi Jennifer.

Not sure your dates will improve. If you come a day earlier (return as planned) you can go on the nonstop for $705.

      Aloha.

  12. Do you thing Southwest or Hawaiian Airlines will offer Inter-island Coupon books like 35 years

ago between Hawaiian and Aloha Airlines???

  13. My husband and I are looking to travel to Maui to celebrate our 10 year wedding anniversary with our two young kids kids this coming July for 10 days. We would like to be there on our anniversary date – July 12th so other than that dates are flexible before and after. Should we book now or wait it out a little longer for a possible price drop. Traveling from SAN to OGG. Thanks!

  14. Going from Los Angeles to Lihue in Jan. 20, 2019. Any idea when might be best time to buy tickets? Thanks for your input.

  15. Looking for 2 tickets PDX to OGG Oct. 6 to Oct. 13, 2018. I see direct is about $640, which seems a bit high for October. Thinking of waiting as about 6 months out and October is usually a low season month, would you agree?

  16. Aloha!

Family of 6 looking to travel from OAK to HNL 10/4/18-10/11/18. Hawaiian Airlines is $471 as of right now. Since we’re 6 months out and traveling during low season, do you think prices will drop? Should we wait closer to our travel dates to purchase? We would love your advice, please. Thank you in advance!

    Mahalo,

    Liu

    1. Hi Liu.

Yes do wait on that route for your dates. Target price is about $100 less than currently available. Can’t say when it will happen, but we are always reporting on those fares, so stay tuned and we’ll have those coming up later in spring or during summer. Don’t rush to buy.

      Aloha.

  17. Hello! I have a timeshare in Maui and have to work with the dates 8/12 – 8/19. I’m seeing flights now for between $530 and $600. We are still 4.5 months out from travel, do you think I should wait to purchase to see if the race to Hawaii continues to lower prices or have we capped out on that benefit?

I am traveling from LAX to OGG on 8/12/-8/19 (timeshare restrictions). There are fares available currently from about $530 to $600. Do you think prices will get lower, or should I book now? Thanks for your thoughts! Thanks for your thoughts!

    1. Hi Erina.

Looks like low $500’s which isn’t bad to lock in. Could come down by say $50, but you would probably need to change to mid-week dates, which appears to not be possible. Your weekend flights will remain more expensive. We’d suggest buying.

      Aloha.

  18. Aloha,

I’m looking for flights from PDX to Honolulu June 9th, then an inter island Hopper a few days later, and returned from OGG to PDX on June 21st.

I’ve been watching airfare for the past couple of months and have seen it go from $800 down to $500, and then saw $100 per person hike last night so my total for two people was around $1600 with taxes and fees.

This morning I’m now finding Hawaiian has this itinerary at $500 again.

Some web sites say to buy now. Other websites say to wait until around 6 weeks before my trip, as it will be a significant price drop.

What says the Best of Hawaii?

😎 So excited for this trip… I haven’t been to the islands in 15 years, and I’m bringing my oldest child for the first time as her high school graduation present!!

    Mahalo, Becky

PS – just to see if I could, I went to book the $500 round-trip flight this morning, and when I went to hit submit it timed out and refreshed with a $740 per person price…

So I’m guessing what I saw was a glitch in the system, or a window I had open from last night.

    1. Hi Becky.

$584 on Hawaiian as of right now. Not a bad price. Complication is two-fold: 1) flying on Saturday and 2) return is in very high priced season. Suggest buying now as it is doubtful that it will go down due to complication indicated.

Also on your PS, try clearing your browser cache or using a different browser and see if you get any different results.

      Aloha.

  19. We are planning a trip for 9 of us to Maui 12/29-1/05/2019. Leaving from Chicago, right now tickets are 1,400. Will they come down in price? I realize this is prime time, but 1,400….

  20. Hi
Thank you for this website and useful info.
We are flying from LAX to Maui 8/2 thru 8/12 for a wedding.
Found non stop on Hawaiian to kahuliui returning on United for $572 rt.

Wondering if we should wait to see if the competition heats up due to the new aircraft you have mentioned in previous posts.

What would you recommend? What woukd be considered a fair price?

    1. Hi Monique.

That’s a really good price for your dates. Suggest you consider buying that now and not looking back as it is hard to predict it getting better.

      Aloha.

  21. Aloha! Very excited to find this website! We are heading to Honolulu the last week of October 2018 to celebrate our 40th anniversary. I’ve just started looking at airfare. Leaving from Tulsa, OK. Airfare seems very high at between $800 and $1,000, especially compared to some prices you have quoted for off-peak travel. Should we wait to buy?

Thank you so much for this great resource. I look forward to hearing what you suggest.

    1. Hi Debbie.

Thank you. Tulsa gets down to about $800 and that’s generally as low as it goes. Only alternative is for very long stopovers (adding perhaps 10 hours each way). And that only saves you up to $150. Doubtful it will come down from that. Probably best time to be checking is during summer.

      Aloha.

  22. Hello! Just stumbled across your site. We are looking to go from LAX non stop to Honolulu the 11/8/18 – 11/12/18. I haven’t flown in over a decade, so I have no idea what to expect and when to plan on booking the airfare. Any guidance is greatly appreciated!

    1. Hi Cassandra.

Target price is low $400’s which isn’t available yet. May take a few months but suggest waiting given your low season, mid-week travel plans.

      Aloha.

  23. Aloha!
We would like to visit Hawaii (the big island) from Phx Az. on late Sept. 2018 for a week.
The lowest airline price for HA is $757 round trip. We will be flying Tuesday and returning to Az. on Tuesday.

My question is.. how long should I wait before I purchase our tickets in hopes that the price may go down even lower?

    Thank You for your time!
    Annie

  24. Hello, looking to travel from SFO to HNL 3/29-4/6/18. Will there be any last minute spring break deals coming soon?

  25. Hi. Looking to book a trip from Portland, OR to Maui in early June. Dates are flexible but cheapest we’re finding right now is about $474 flying Alaska one way and Hawaiian another day. Do you think they will drop anymore if we continue to wait?

  26. Aloha! I love your insights on your site. We try to do annual visits to Hawaii with our family of 5, usually around the 9/22 date and are flexible in traveling weekdays or weekends. So far the cheapest I have seen is $429 pp round trip from Oakland to OGG. Please let me know what you think, should we buy now or wait?

    Thanks!!

    1. Hi Jean.

We could well see better sales on that route. Best hope though might save you $75 per person. Is that worth it, or is it better for you to be able to lock in your trip? If you’d rather wait, you might see better deals for fall starting in about 90 days.

      Aloha.

  27. Aloha Beat of Hawaii!

My husband, 17 year old son and I are flying out of San Jose CA and traveling to Honolulu 8/7/18 through 8/14/18. I found a round trip non stop (both ways) for a total of $597pp including taxes and fees (not bags) by Hawaiian Air. In your opinion, should I buy now or wait? If yes, is there any advantage to purchasing on a particular week day than a Saturday or Sunday?

This is an awesome resource. Thank you for making it available!

Have a great afternoon, Julie. 🙂

    1. Hi Julie.

Thank you. It’s a fair price but cost will drop by over $100 the following week if you’re flexible. Your week is harder to predict. Thus waiting to buy may or may not help. Weekends are generally more costly. Hope that helps.

      Aloha.

  28. I am inquiring on when I should purchase 5 airline tickets for Dec 2018 (20-27?). Airline you recommend and would like the shortest time on the plane. Going from Nashville to Honolulu. Thank you very much for your time. Appreciate it very much

  29. I’m looking to travel from Portland, Or to Maui (OGG) at the end of July or beginning of August. The best price I’ve found is $620 for non stop. Is this a good price or will prices likely go down?

  30. Aloha! We are leaving Seattle and traveling to Maui Aug 13-30 to “re-charge our batteries” and have been watching Alaska Air fares for months. I would like to use my companion fare. Last August when I travelled, Alaska Air the fares were several hundred less, is there a rhyme or reason for such a dramatic jump this year? Getting nervous! Should I just be patient? Many thanks and Mahalo!

    1. Hi Lisa.

Yes seems quite expensive for those dates. Suggest being patient, as you said. At least a couple more months. Availability should not be an issue for your dates.

      Aloha.

  31. Hoping to take my family on a trip to one of the Hawaiian islands (kauai is out favorite but any of them would be amazing). We’re not limited to a specific timeframe. Would like to purchase tickets as early as March 1st for a trip anytime in 2018. Any info on the cheapest time to go would be very helpful. My husband and I went to Kauai last year for our honeymoon but this year we would like to take our 3 children. 17, 11 and 11. We’re pretty open timing wise just trying to find something affordable as this would be the first time any of the kids have been on a plane. We are in portland, Oregon but could easily leave from Seattle as well. Please help, any information would be gladly accepted and veey helpful

    1. Hi Christy.

Nothing specific we can recommend. Sign up for our email alerts and then come to Hawaii. Spring (after spring break) and fall (not around Thanksgiving) will be best.

      Aloha.

  32. Hello,

Thanks for the insight! I did notice that flights from NYC (where I am located) were quite expensive compared to other cities and your reasoning confirms that. I’m a student on a tight budget — a good friend of mine is getting married in Honolulu at the end of July. I know this is unfortunately near the end of the summer peak time. I am looking to go from 7/23-30 and found a flight for $940. I know there is the “3 month rule” so I was wondering how heavily you would rely on that, or if I should go ahead and book it.

    Thank you so much again!

    1. Hi AC.

Thank you. The 3 month rule is very general. It’s the point when airlines certainly reconsider (although they are actually doing that on a multiple times per day basis). That doesn’t apply to peak periods, and it is not at all likely that your dates will improve. Suggest buying now.

      Aloha.

  33. Aloha! I found your site as I began my search for flights from LAX (or BUR) to HNL for my niece’s wedding on Sat May 12, 2018. Tentative travel dates are Thur 5/10 – Thur 5/17 but flexible as long as I’m there for the weekend.

Also asking on behalf of family traveling from Florida, departing JAX, MCO or ATL to HNL for wedding. Any suggestions on their best route?

Many thanks in advance for any input you may have.

    1. Hi Marian.

About $400 should do it for you. Atlanta is best bet it seems for others, with nonstop at $679. That’s a good price for nonstop. Or they can slowly puddle-skip for $100 less.

      Aloha.

  34. Aloha,
Going to Maui from Seattle April 28, 2018. Flying sat to sat…of course will be a bit more…prices now are $650-$700. I’ve been watching since August and it hasn’t been below $550. I went the same time last year in 2017 and booked my tickets in oct/nov, any predictions for when to buy? Watch and wait…Last year we paid $475 return for couch.
    Mahalo

  35. Great website info! Just wanted to post info for others, I was able to get 142 + tax on Hawaiian from SEA to KOA in August and then a return on United for 152 + tax in August through SFO. Prices move daily if not hourly, so starting to see some good deals happening.

  36. I just started looking at this site and love the section where people ask and get replies about flight information.
I’m planning a trip for 6 people in June as a high school graduation gift and flying from LAX.
We want to go to 2 islands and have room reservations on Kauai for June 16-23. So we will be looking for either the week of June 9-16 or June 23 to 30 . Also not sure what other island we should visit, but was looked by at Oahu or Maui. I saw flight to Honolulu for around $550-$700 rt. Do you think the airfare prices will drop for around this time period, and which week would be the best for the least expensive airfare?
Also any recommendations for housing cost and locations for either island. We are looking for something with a kitchen so we can prepare some of our meals and save on some expenses . Look forward to hearing replies.

    1. Hi Raquel.

You’re flying at a very expensive time. If you can arrive in Hawaii earlier in the month, that will help. Availability for airfare, accommodations and car rental will be an issue thereafter. Keep in mind that inter-island flights are both expensive and time consuming, so you should consider flying directly to and from your desired islands instead.

      Aloha.
