Hawaiian Airlines Axes Nonstop Widebody Route As Alaska Takes Control

Hawaiian Airlines has announced the end of its nonstop service between Honolulu and Austin, effective March 2025. While any route cancellation raises eyebrows, this news didn’t surprise those following the industry closely.

Launched in April 2021 during the pandemic’s peak, the route sought to capitalize on Austin’s growth as a tech hub and its demand for Hawaii flights. Ultimately, it did not pan out.

In discussing Hawaiian routes yesterday, we intentionally omitted to mention Austin, as we had been anticipating this announcement for some time. Regular reader Daryl asked yesterday, “Don’t hear or read much of anything about Hawaiian’s AUS/HNL nonstop? They’ve been flying it 4X a week. I’ve used it a few times since the Covid pandemic. The A330 Is very comfortable, and tailwinds usually chop a good hour off the 8-hour flight both ways.”

Despite initial optimism, the route struggled to meet long-term viability. Another reader, Daniel, shared with us, “I flew this route twice, and the planes were far from full. I’m disappointed but not shocked it’s gone.”

Another email we received added, “With Austin growing so fast, I hoped this would work. But I guess the numbers didn’t add up.”

These sentiments reflect a broader challenge facing airlines flying to Hawaii: adapting quickly to evolving markets while maintaining profitability. Rapid adaptation will also soon come to Southwest Airlines.

Under its new Alaska Airlines ownership, Hawaiian Airlines is in the midst of fine-tuning its route network to respond to shifting demand. Cutting this route is a strategic move that will reallocate resources toward more lucrative markets, including perhaps new ones.

West Coast hubs such as Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Seattle continue to see robust demand, and international routes, including the resumed Auckland service, are again in focus.

This decision underscores how the post-pandemic travel landscape has reshaped airline priorities. Some Hawaii flights launched during the pandemic, including Hawaiian’s prior Orlando route, were about keeping planes moving more than about profitability. Things have since changed drastically.

  1. The unspoken fact is- this must have been HA’s worst performing route to get axed like this… not even a seasonal reduction but full on cut.

    Full planes dont mean its making money.

    1. Maybe, however it is a lot harder to start new routes with no name recognition than developing and strengthing your existing network. Money might be better spent developing your current network. Alaska management will want to reinforce the network before spreading their wings too far.

      1. True that Greg…interesting fact is the Hawaiian “brand” does help alleviate that. Introducing a new route to Hawaii with Hawaiian Air helps with the recognition factor. Hawaii is world recognized and for that reason Alaska is wise to keep the name.

  2. Have you read the article, John? How is that about “not shrinking, but growing”? We (Austin) have lost the direct flight. How is that for “Nothing has happened”?

    Even one direct flight a week could have been a good compromise to serve this market.

  3. Most flights will be diverted to Sea/Tac airport with some kind of plane change or layover. Good news for Washington state in collecting that 8% sales tax on the departing flight and such snacks, meals or beverages purchased before departing. Sorry Hawaii Washington state will get their turn at emptying the tourist wallet before you do for all Alaska/Hawaiian flights destined for Hawaii.

    1. In Washington, food is not subject to sales taxes. Snacks are. So soft drinks would be. There is a carve out for prepared food on site vs. packaged food as well. I am not clear if there is an exemption or not for WA. I will have to look this up.

      I know that some states have exemptions in their sales tax code for meals purchased by airlines for resale to passengers. I am going to guess Washington probably has an exemption as well.

  4. This is a consequence of unrestricted corporate mergers and acquisitions – ultimately, the consumer has fewer options.

    We flew Austin to Honolulu several times in the past few years (last year, even twice), and I would gladly pay more for a fare to get this non-stop flight convenience.

    1. Agree with you GD regarding the AUS/HNL nonstop flight. Also it was basically a daytime flight in both directions. No overnight red-eye!

  5. Does not appear that Alaska has Hawaii at heart. Cutting a popular SAN (San Diego) – OGG (Maui) flight is a stricking example.

    1. Not sure how Alaska changing a flight from a Hawaiian A321 to an Alaska 737 means Alaska doesn’t care about Hawaii? Really??

    2. The facts do not support your statement. Currently there is one Hawaiian flight and one Alaska flight on the route. Next year, there will be two Alaska flights on OGG-SAN. The current schedule for next year has one flight at around the same time as the two current flights and a second flight that serves connections in SAN. While there will not be a narrowbody Hawaiian flight there will be two narrowbody Alaska flights.

      1. Right now there is a Hawaiian flight leaving San Diego at 10:10 am on an Airbus A321

        And an Alaska flight leaving San Diego at 10:45 am on a 737 Max 9

        There is no widebody on this route currently.

        In July there are two Alaska flights – one leaving at 10:20 am and anotger at 5:40 pm on on 737-900. Yes, they re-timed the two flights. This makes sense – why run 2 flights right on top of each other.

        The Airbus seats about 10 more people.

        There isn’t a widebody aircraft on this route right now, and other than a 10 seat difference, its basically the same..

      Going from an Airbus to a 737 is about a 10 seat difference. Basically comparable aircraft. But the Airbus has a longer range.

      It makes business sense to put the Airbus on a route where the extra distance is necessary.

      Hardly a real issue to be concerned about. Normally I like Airbus planes a little better, but this is hardly something to lose sleep over.

      1. Vlads comment seems to sum up much of how the anti merger folks on here are grasping at straws. Ridiculous allegations based on emotion. Nothing has happened yet that indicates anything other than AS is maximizing the synergies these two carriers combining creates. As Hawaiian was doing with the NEO’S they will for sure create even more non stops in markets that don’t support widebody service. Right now Seattle is benefiting from increased non stop widebody service. I imagine there will be plenty more changes as the 787’s come on line, but Alaska is not looking to shrink, the merger is about growing, I.E more flights, not less. They’ll use the widebody’s where they can fill them up, like Seattle

  6. I’m surprised there isn’t a business case for nonstop flights between Honolulu and Manila or Cebu, given the huge Filipino population in the islands. Sure, it will be fairly low-yield, but there’s only one other competitor in the nonstop market. All other options require connections in Seoul, Tokyo, or Guam.

    1. Flew the route to visit our 3 Filipino/Hawaii families who migrated to Texas. It seemed most of those on the plane were Hawaii people going back and forth, not Texans tourists coming to Hawaii.
      It would be much cheaper for Texans to go to Cancun or the Carribean, than to come to overpriced and unfriendly Hawaii. And yes the family bought houses in Texas for
      1/3 of what they would have cost in Hawaii.

      1. Very interesting thoughts John. Hawaiian Airlines did a lousy job of advertising this AUS/HNL route. You won’t get Texans to fly it if they don’t even know it exists. Texans who travel to Hawaii. Mostly will use American Airlines as they are headquartered at DFW, and United with its huge Houston hub, formerly Continental’s headquarters. Hope that your family is enjoying living in the Lone Star State.

      2. Yup. But if you’re not Red, you might as well be dead if you want to live in the stultifying heat and humidity of Austin. Personally, lucky live Hawaii. BTW, you can still buy a comfortable 2b/2b on the BI for $500k.

  7. I’m guessing the aircraft will be used HNL SEA since they increased widebody service to SEA from one a day to twice daily. I suspect that will be more profitable and obviously creates a lot more travel options to Hawaii through Alaskas biggest hub. Not sure where anyone is getting that HA is parking any 330’s. Combining these two route structures obviously means some changes. AUS was a weak market for them, surprised it lasted that long.

  8. Sounds like Alaska airlines is the priority and let’s see move over Hawaiian Airlines. This change will mean longer layover’s coming and going so those 8-10 hour flights might be 12 or more hours. May make tourist’s second guess if Hawaii is really worth it.

  9. My last flight on Hawaiian left lots to be desired. Service levels were well below expectations. My advice to all is vote with your feet. If they’re going to abandon you as a customer, be sure to take your business to their competitors. You’ll be the one having to make multiple connections. You deserve to feel good about where and how you spend your money.

  10. Sadly, the 321 flight 57/58 SAN-OGG is also being cut. Only two direct flight from SAN currently, going to 1 next year. Apparently AS will now make that flight. I do fly AS to KOA But it’s certainly not the Hawaii experience that I can get from HA. We, at SAN, were truly hoping that more direct flights from here would be scheduled to get a preferential gate. I guess the higher ups think people prefer to fly in/out of L.A. (ugh)… guess I’ll be stuck flying less Aloha on AS unless I want to change planes in HNL.

    1. The HA flight is going but there will be two alaska flights one at the current time and one later which will allow connections in SAN. I know I can’t link in the comments but cranky flier had the information on the two flight.

  11. Thanks BOH for the update on HA’s AUS/HNL A330 nonstop. We flew it several times since it’s inception in April 2021. All the flights we were on were packed both ways. The only negative I have is that HA’s promotion of this route the Austin/San Antonio corridor of over 4 million people was non exisistent. No media advertising, nothing. I would mention it to people planning trips to HawaII, and no one I talked to had any idea. Now the only nonstop flights from Texas to HNL year round, and Maui seasonally, are American and United, and only from either DFW (AA), and IAH (UA). So we will continue to connect thru PHX, LAX or SFO to LIH where we have our timeshare in Princeville. AS connecting thru SEA is too long. Several other airlines expanded in Austin during the pandemic, and most all of those expansion flights have been discontinued. Everyone over estimated the growth in travel to and from Auatin and San Antonio post pandemic.

      1. I think the point is that most people would prefer the direct flight. I know I would. The SAN-OGG flight is being eliminated next summer so now we fly AS or from LAX 🙁

        1. The original point posted was the long connection time for Seattle. I would agree.

          But there are 2 San Diego flights to OGG this summer. A Hawaiian plane was subbed out for an Alaska plane. About the same capacity.

          There are other connections, and every analyst was not surprised with this move. They decided they can make more money elsewhere with the bigger plane. That’s reasonable. Doesn’t mean we like it.

          I was surprised to see it cancelled outright. I expected maybe a reduction from 4 x weekly to 2. But I guess not.

          Austin built up fast, but most of those flights are gone now too.

      2. Unfortunately not for our next trip in late January, 2025. All Alaska options are AUS or SAT through SEA for the connection. All other options are two stop connections through LAX or SFO using AA on one leg in both directions. We’re actually booked on United one stop connection through SFO, return through LAX. Much more convenient. For us Alaska is not a good option for any Hawaii travel at this point. AA and United are the most convenient at this time.

  12. This should come as no surprise. The transition of tech companies to Texas has been over hyped, and tech/Honolulu is not a major industry connection. What’s needed more is increased schedules to French Polynesia, the Cooks and hopefully New Zealand. Tourist and local travel should increase as Americans also decide whether this is the time for relocation from the U.S. to more stable democracies.

  13. Ah, I hope the economics are workable for the Boston to Honolulu route. I greatly prefer the Hawaiian experience to Delta’s in general but perhaps that will erode as the culture of the merger becomes clear.

  14. This was in the cards long before the Alaska purchase. It was yet another underperforming route contributing to Hawaiian’s precarious financial situation. I’m guessing the folks who decided to put an A330 on that route probably didn’t do their due diligence. Wishful thinking is no way to run an airline.

    If an Alaska manager decided to pull the trigger, so be it. It should have been done much earlier.

  16. I understand the need to cut underperforming routes, but I can’t help but feel this is just the beginning of a much larger shake-up ahead for Hawaiian Airlines. The Austin route wasn’t a cash cow, but it served an important role and was Hawaiian’s only city anywhere near there. Alaska’s takeover could mean fewer widebodies overall, and that’s a big loss for anyone who values the unique experience Hawaiian used to offer on these longer routes.

    1. Unfortunately, the airlines only care about their bottom line and how much the stockholders benefit. Unless the USDOT steps in, it will remain that way.

      1. Another perspective is airlines don’t keep routes that don’t turn a profit. If they did that they would disappear. They do have to turn a profit to keep serving the public.

  17. The writing has been on the wall for some time with this route. Hawaiian’s A330s are great for comfort, but they’re not exactly economical for routes like this. Now, with Alaska calling the shots, it’s clear they’re looking to maximize efficiency by reallocating widebodies to international and West Coast-heavy routes. What concerns me is the bigger picture—are we going to see Hawaiian lose its identity in favor of Alaska’s own playbook?

  18. Who didn’t know that the merger would be changing everything. I just hope they don’t forget the loyal customers who made Hawaiian Airlines what it is today. It’s hard to not feel like big brother has taken over.

  19. It feels like Hawaiian is clearly moving again towards prioritizing international routes, but I wonder if they’re losing their connection to more domestic markets. Time will tell.

  21. This is a blow to those of us who prefer widebody comfort on long flights from Texas. Yikes. Connections just aren’t going to be the same.
