We have a reservation via an owner at The Whaler in Kannappali arriving Oct 9 leaving Oct 19. Difficult to get information at this time but do not want to go if there are restrictions. We respect the locals and giving them time to recover from this horrible disaster. If the government of Hawaii and Maui want us to stay away that is fine with us. However, if they need the tourists to keep the economy moving in a positive direction, we want to come. The road from the airport to Kannappali at this time is closed….any idea when it might open without restrictions.
What we just replied to Andrea seems to apply to your circumstances as well:
Your trip isn’t for more than two months. Hopefully that leaves a chuck of time to see what happens, at least for the next few weeks. With the latest advice from the state saying to avoid west Maui through the end of August, they will be updating advice that should prove helpful for dates beyond August. Hope that helps.
We’ll also add, since you asked, that the opening of the road to West Maui will be discussed by the state in the next few weeks as we move through the crisis.
We had reservations for Kaanapali Beach Resort Sept 10 through Sept 30, our annual 2 week stay in Maui. But since we both are in our 80s, we thought it best to cancel our trip since Kaanapali is so close to the devistated area & if the highway is closed when we arrive, it would be very hard on us. We heard about lack of water, electricity and cell phone service (in case of emergency our cells are important to u) We been following all the updates on UTube with the civic leaders. My husband is depressed over this as he thinks Maui is the only Island in the Hawaiian Islands. He loves it there and so do I. But we think our condo at the resort should be used to house someone who really needs it. We have donated to a Go Fund Me account for Warren and Annabell’s employees who lost their homes and now no long have a job. That has always been our “go to place” while in Maui along with Front St shopping. We are in prayer for all of those in Lahaina and area who are hurting so badly. It breaks our heart to see so many homeless, with nothing but the clothes on their back. And even more heartbroken for the deaths that is getting higher and higher and their families.
My heart goes out to all those in Maui
I had planned to vacation there in March 2024 I’m tore if to visit I know my $ matter to economy and the residents and workers
However I feel many people are being very selfish just worried about their vacation and lose of funds
Think if you lost your family home job past and future. Stop being selfish and reach out and ask what can I do to assist
If Maui thinks I can come in March I will if they are still healing their community comes first. I pray for all of Maui and all the people my prayers will not stop I send my love I wish I could do more and for those who can do more. May God be with yo Maui!!
We have a reservation for the Whaler in Kaanapali September 3rd to the 13th.We have reached out to the owner, no answer. VRBO has tried to reach out to the owner, no answer. We have travelers insurance but they want us to provide proof that we can’t use our vacation rental? The road is closed going to Kaanapali, we don’t know if the Whaler has power. We are trying to follow the directions by not coming to Maui. Any suggestions on how we can get a refund from VRBO? Thanks
We have no suggestion beyond inquiring with your credit card company. Based on what the utility said today, if Whaler doesn’t have power it soon should. That doesn’t impact the fact that West Maui is inaccessible and should be avoided until further notification.
My fiance and I are supposed to be staying in a condo at Hale Ono Loa Sept 6-12 which is between Lahaina and Kaanapali. We are supposed to be getting married on the beach in Kihei on the 9th. I don’t know what to do. The company, Vacasa, that booked our condo says were fine but the roads in the area looked closed. Iam just not sure how to proceed. I do not have the money to re-set our wedding elsewhere without refunds and no one wants to refund anything for Sept trips.. But this is my wedding. And respectfully I am just more concerned about the people of Maui than anything…. Any advice would be soooo appreciated! Literally heartbroken!
My husband and I have reservations in Kihei the end of October for 11 days. We are not sure if we should cancel our plans or keep them. We are so sorry for the devistation that is going on in Maui and praying for everyone. Please advise
We have a trip booked at a condo in paki Maui which to my understanding is pretty close to Lahaina. Our trip is 9/20 and we booked through Airbnb. We attempted to cancel our trip and switch it to another island to let everyone grieve and rebuild this beautiful place but our host is refusing to refund anything after 8/31. I am really hoping something changes in the near future! Please let me know of any other resolutions people have or anything else we can consider!
Thank you,
Rachel
we are in the same situation, we are being told that our resort will postpone our travel up to 2 years but will not refund our money. Our plan was to go to another island but unless we can cancel and get our money back we can’t afford to do that. I read they are encouraging stays in other parts of Maui, but the hotel rooms are not able to be booked so that isn’t an option either. From what I have read we are not able to cancel our plane tickets since we are traveling in September.
Yeah I spoke to our airlines and they gave the same dates that they were only refunding non-refundable flights through 8/31 but after that you cannot get a refund!
Finally just returned from W Maui last night. It is a wreck there. Lahaina is a terrible and sad situation. Power only came on two nights ago after almost a week. Most places were already shut down or preparing to do so. Computer and booking systems are completely in disarray in all of west Maui -even at smaller places. If there is staffing, it is often bc many of the local people and staff are sheltering there. They may have no choice and a lot to manage and process on the personal side. These folks are amazing, but understandably on edge about their situation and the future. May God bless them. Do what you can to help.
We have a trip scheduled for the week of 10/9. Staying in Kahana. Our itrip host has told us they will not refund any of our stay at this time. :-(. I’m not familiar enough with the area to say if there is another way in and out of Kahana.
Praying for the people of Maui, especially Lahaina. The devastating loses are beyond belief. I know you will rebuild your beautiful home.
We are in the same situation, booked thru iTrip for Kahana Sunset for 10/11, can’t get in touch with anyone – owner doesn’t respond to iTrip emails; it’s like $5,000 – they can’t just keep our money

We have a rental in Kaanapali with KBM resorts. They will not provide a refund of our $1800 deposit for travel on 10/3-10/8. Even with a national disaster and the state of Hawaii say not to travel, they won’t budge on their policy. I even asked to push to 2024 or use the funds at another location/island such as Oahu, and no response. This company is profiting from us, when there is no means to travel to and from our resort due to closed roads and the severity of this horrific heartbreaking situation. I would be grateful if they replied and donated our deposit to the people on need, in Maui. Thank you for listening and please advise if there are others with this same situation. We respect the request to not travel.
We are in the same situation. We are supposed to arrive in Napili in 2 weeks. KBM resorts are not answering calls or responding. People need to put pressure on these businesses if they want tourists to stay away. I have contacted KHON and the Honolulu Star. It hasn’t seemed to helped. People want to do the right thing here but the $ is winning out.
Your article is well stated. Given theses horrible events on Maui,
with much thought and respect should we even consider another island? Our plans are for late October. I just want to show respect to the people of Hawaii and if they want visitors to stay away completely?
As you can read in the comments, there are wide-ranging opinions. At this time, there is no further indication that you should not travel to Maui, except for West Maui.
Thank you for taking the time.
I was asking more so about visiting another island and how the people from other islands may be feeling about visitors? Maybe I should just listen to my gut. In good conscious I could not go to Maui given the circumstances.
Any advice for travelers wishing to cancel, but can not get through to the property management company, My Perfect Stays. I would assume their operations have been affected, but asking for a relative. Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone affected.
Thank you,
Nancy
This is what I received from my perfect stays when I emailed them today :
Aloha, as you most likely know, Maui is in the midst of Hurricane Dora. There are fires causing evacuation, power outages and limited to no cell and internet service. Please be patient as we work to ensure safety of staff and guests. Please pray for our beautiful island! We will respond to your emails, calls, texts and messages as soon as we are able. Mahalo!
We have vacation flights scheduled to Maui in January ‘24. We may still be able to change our tickets but don’t know if we should pull the plug yet. We still haven’t scheduled hotel reservations so we are still open to plan. This will be our first trip to Hawaii so we really don’t know what to do. Can you please offer an opinion? I realize with this unusual devastation that you guys may not know. But if there are places really removed from the section of Maui that burned maybe this can still work out. Any info is appreciated. Thanks for your help.
It’s to soon to know.I wouldn’t book Hotel,or resort at this time.We have a family trip planned for Sept 4th.The host is being difficult and appears to be playing games. We just want to cancel and get a refund. If she refuses by tomorrow ? (Unethical) I will have my attorney handle. We graciously donated to the Red Cross not 4000,00 to a HOST!!
Thank you so much for providing this information. We have a trip planned to Napili Bay for Sept 4-18 and we will be contacting the hotel to see about rescheduling for the future. I have been visiting West Maui since 1973, and it’s my favorite place on earth. My heart is with all of you. The similarities between what happened in Lahaina and what happened here in Santa Rosa in 2017 are heartbreaking. I’m so sorry that this has happened in paradise. Love and aloha, Sue
💔😢🌺 broken hearted for “our Maui” I too have travel plans and deposit with KMB resorts. I feel like full refunds should be issued, since Maui will be in recovery, and how could this be the vacation planned and hoped for 😢
Aloha Rob & Jeff.
The sad news from Maui has consumed the airwaves these last days. It’s all a bit of a nightmare and so sad for the people of Maui.
Just contacting you to say that I had decided to try and change a reservation with Hawaiian to go to Maui in September. It was in response to the authorities discouraging travel to Maui. Hawaiian have put ‘no change fees’ on their website. However, speaking to the call centre, in order to change my flight from LAX-OGG to LAX to LIH, they wanted to charge $279. That’s hardly encouraging you to change and ‘help’ Maui, eh?
Sorry to sound off. (Maui has bigger problems that me griping.)
I moved here 40 years ago. West Maui was green lush AG. land! Somehow we must bring back agricultural land or irrigate surrounding fields. Our housing is surrounded by extremely dry brush. With our gusting winds one spark and you have a fire storm! Until they figure that out these events will continue.
There is so much more to do even in terms of finding untold bodies than to know what will be happening in November in Kaanapali. If you can be patient then certainly we’ll have more news about travel as soon as possible. That isn’t now.
Thank you BOH for having up-to-date info, I can always count on you guys. I watched the Governor’s news conference yesterday. The underlying chord striking me is that this is much worse than anyone realizes. There were some hard truths expressed. When the police chief said only about 3% of the area has been checked out and 93 are confirmed dead, my heart dropped. My heart is with you and Lahaina and the entire county of Maui as we all mourn.
I see many posters here worried about their upcoming vacations. We have a week reserved in Kaanapali the first week in September, no refunds of course, too late. I’m pretty sure we are out the money but I await word of what will happen with that. As I see from these posts we are not the only ones, and we can’t afford to lose $5K either. But we will not be going. It feels ethically and morally wrong during such turmoil. I wonder what kind of vacation it would be anyway. The people who normally work at the resort are not working because they are homeless and without any possessions due to the fire. They’re worried about what happens next in their lives. They shouldn’t be working to serve others who insist on coming for a vacation in this very stressful time. How can anyone truly enjoy their vacation in a situation like this? My heart is broken for these people. This is day by day. Let’s give Maui time to heal and follow the advice of the authorities there.
1000% agree with you.
We are heartbroken for the people of Maui.
We just feel so horrible for everyone, locals especially and visitors also.
We’ve been visiting Maui for almost 50 years, going 2 to 3 times a year in addition to seeing ohana on Oahu.
We own at Westin Kaanapali timeshare and have canceled visits in September and December, waiting to return in March 2024.
Maui and her people need time to grieve and recover without visitors using precious resources.
Now it is just inappropriate and morally wrong to go.
Like alot of posts here, we had a VRBO 5 night stay in Kihei after we were, now canceled Westin Kaanapali and the VRBO host from the mainland is playing hard ball with us about canceling or even re booking in 2024.
All we get is everything is ok in Kihei and he won’t be flexible= he wants his $$$.
We are going to try 1 more time this week to contact him and try to fix this.
It is just so wrong to visit Maui now, give the people and island time to start healing their lives.
Take care everyone
Aloha
Maui No Ka Oi forever !!
People need to cancel their vacation for at least 6 months…I truly believe in staying at a resort and booking direct with resort and airline…then you don’t havento worry about refunds…too many vrbo in maui that’s why the locals find it hard to find housing…I believe it is selfish to worry about your vacation to maui now
I get your point, however i can another side of the coin. It is possible to see how possible virtue signaling of “i will not go to Maui” can do the opposite for people on this island. Maui desperately depends upon tourism for their economy. I would almost be inclined to visit parts of maui that are welcome to tourism instead of another location as a way to help out and bring money to a community that on top of many losing everything, their economy has just been shut down.
Aloha. We are planning on coming to Maui for 2 days to explore the road to Hana August 24-25. We called The Hana Inn where we are staying and they say they are open. We canceled the rest of our trip and switched to Kauai. Do you think it’s ok for us to hike and explore the road to Hana during this difficult time? I’m hearing mixed reviews.
Thank you!
We just don’t know. We’re hopeful that the state will have a position that they express in the next day or two about travel to relatively unaffected areas of Maui. But please keep in mind that the infrastructure of the island is a shared one that covers all of Maui.
Aloha again! I’m just checking back in. We still have the 2 days in Hana booked for next week, August 24-25 to hike and explore. I’m just wondering if there’s any updates on visiting the east side. I don’t want to upset any locals if we come. If that’s the case we will head to Oahu instead. Any thoughts?
Thank you again for helping everyone with their plans at this somber time for Maui.
They’re absolutely no issues preventing you from going ahead with your travel plans for next week. That according to the latest advice from the state of Hawaii.
Thank you so much. We just don’t want to upset the people of Maui. I understand the government is ok with us coming to the east side but I’m just worried about how the locals would treat us. We don’t want to offend anyone.
Thank you.
Beat of Hawaii
Hi Gina.
That gets back to the personal matter issue. There isn’t a “they” exactly when it comes to Hawaii residents. Those who are happy to be working will welcome you. Others may feel differently.
Aloha.

We are booked for a condo beginning September 10th in West Maui and CBIslandVacations will not offer us a refund after two inquiries. It is obvious it is unsafe and undesirable to travel to Maui during this horrific unfortunate disaster. I will not risk my health to go for the 11 day vacation we planned and under the circumstances, the Island cannot accommodate the West Maui tourists right now. I remain hopeful that the Governor will issue another announcement for those tourists arriving in September to not visit and then we can get a refund.
You should try contacting your credit card company and let them know you want to dispute the charge for the hotel payment. Given the circumstances, they may work with you.
I did contact MC and they said since his property was unaffected by fire and his place is still available for our dates there is nothing they can do. It is an ethical decision at this point not a legal one.
It is very important to the people of Maui that tourism return sooner than later. Since 80% of their economy depends on monies spent from visitors, returning to Maui will not only help the individuals impacted by this devastation, but will also help stimulate rebuilding efforts. Hoping that the airlines will respond with lower airfares to the island.
Much appreciation for all the information as my nonprofit organization has served for the young generation there in Maui. My heart goes out to all those that have been affected by this tragedy and prayers that recovery will come soon.
We feel deeply for the loss and grief of those on Maui (and the Big Island) affected by the horrific fires. We want yo be mindful and empathetic to those who are suffering. Half our town was leveled by a tornado 4 years ago. We understand what a shock it is to not recognize home.
However, we booked a trip to Maalaea the end of September- October, then flying to the Big Island for a few days. Neither our airline nor VRBO are currently allowing us to cancel or change any of our plans or allowing us to alter them to staying on other islands. When we checked with VRBO host, we were told “come on over. Everything is fine. They’re blowing this up to be a bigger issue than it really is!” Which leaves us scratching our heads. How can the pictures we are seeing and stories we are hearing and rising death counts possibly be not “that big of a problem”? We don’t know how to get a real answer or help, BOH seems to be our best avenue for real reporting.
The last thing we want to do is be a drain for resources or be in the way during this time. We are at a loss of what do do and our hands feel tied, even as we pray first and foremost for those who are suffering unimaginably in HI.
We’re sure hope to know more soon that we can share. Maalaea is different of course than Lahaina or Kaanapali. It will recover far sooner in every sense other than island-wide issues impacting all of Maui.
VRBO and its owners should be told under the emergency orders that they must refund all visitor reservations. So those about to come to a VRBO in Kaanapali where there is currently no power should just come anyway or lose their money??
The State and Maui county should revoke All short term rental licenses that do not provide refunds immediately.
Even Kiehi was affected by the fires and all resources are in short supply islandwide and to some degree statewide. Demand that VRBO and their mostly Mainland owners comply.
My heart goes out to the people of Maui. What a terrible tragedy for so many. I hate even asking this with what the people are going through right now.
We have a booking for 3 days (Sept 6 -9) in Kihei before meeting up with my family for a long overdue reunion. We were stuck in Australia during Covid and we haven’t see our family in 4 years. Our reunion has been moved as my family has changed their flights and accomodation to Kauai based on current recommendations and hotel/airline policies. I can also change my flights. However, we haven’t heard back from our VRBO rental and we are past the cancellation deadline.
My initial thought was to come with my two children (12 and 10) and volunteer for 2 days before flying to Kauai. But I’m getting mixed information about whether this will be helpful or just take away resources from locals that very much need them.
I also need to have a back up plan for those 3 days as things are getting booked up and we have a small budget. I also can’t afford to lose the money for our booking because I will need it for the new booking.
Is coming in early September advisable? Any thoughts or advice please?
Thank you for this update. We are all deeply saddened for the people ❤️ of Maui. Here in California we are all to familiar with fires.God speed.See you soon.
Good evening: I read your column on traveling to Maui in the coming months, and I know now is really not the time to ask, knowing that the devastation for the people of West Maui is beyond comprehensible. We do have a trip planned for mid-December and I’m sure there is no way of knowing if this is still a good idea or not. The last thing we’d want to do is make the situation more chaotic for those that live there. We are staying in the Kaanapali resort area at a VRBO. Do you think we should possibly make different arrangements? I respect and love the ohana that is Maui and would never want to intrude on their feelings. Any tips you could give would be helpful. Many blessings to you all, and my heart breaks for all of you. I’ve been there several times and my thoughts are with you during this most difficult time.
we are wondering the same but our trip is for arrival on September 28th. We would like to still come to Maui to help with anything we can and to spend our money there to help their economy, but will not come if they continue to discourage non essential travel. Praying for the island people and first responders.
Praying for everyone in Maui. I have a VRBO condo in Kihei paid with a no refund policy arriving Monday. The host / owner is not allowing me to cancel and get a refund. I can’t afford to just give them (lose) $5k. We saved and used credit. If they don’t refund me, we will have to go anyway. Hopefully contributing to the tourism economy will help and perhaps we can help in some way.
You’ll be totally fine staying in Kihei, and visiting most parts of Maui. Just stay away from Lahaina as everyone is obviously devastated and grieving, and will be for a very long time. They opened the road to Lahaina awhile today, but had to close it again, because some incredibly disrespectful people (both tourists and residents) drove out there to rubberneck and get their photos/videos and traffic was horrendous. Have a nice time visiting Maui and please consider donating to the Red Cross while you’re here. It will be much appreciated 🙂
Not sure about VRBO but AIR BNB has a cancellation policy for Extenuating Circumstances. See link below:
airbnb.com/help/article/1320/
If VRBO doesn’t have this then you need to book next time with AIR BNB
We have our honeymoon booked for Lahaina end of August. We are confused on what we should do…I tried to get a refund via VRBO host(she lives in Maui), and she told me that I don’t qualify for a refund anymore! I couldn’t believe it. We can’t be out 8k..I can’t afford to just throw that away. Host told me that they are 5 miles from the fires and that their property is fine. Please direct me as to what we should do.
Thank you for the update- our thoughts and prayers go out to all on Maui-
We will keep in touch and hope to be able to be back to Wailea and Kihei in November- a donation will be sent to assist those in need-
We are scheduled for Aug 19th in Kihei. Biggest issue is VRBO has no flexibility, we’d just be out almost $10k. The host is encouraging us to come still as that area is not impacted and will help their local economies that also will suffer. I feel stuck. We are trying to find ways to support if we go including volunteering, bringing things from mainland or donating supplies when we arrive. In a bit of wait and see but feel handcuffed by VRBO. 🙁
VRBO owners need to step up!! They make a lot of money off the island. I am trying to cancel and come back in Jan but no flexibility. They are saying come my place didn’t burn down. Kihei is not affected. All these rentals will sit empty while they pocket the money and residents that have lost everything will be sleeping in a car or on a floor. I would rather have the money donated back to Maui.
How are you qualified to make any judgements? Just how, do you think, they could have got to any hydrants in that inferno? Perhaps you should have a better look at the videos of the fire as it raged unrelenting sucking up everything in its path.
Agreed. I host an Air BNB on the Big Island, but it barely helps me pay my mortgage. Look for hosted rentals. Money stays on the island and helps the local economy.
I had some people coming on 8/10, and they had questioned the Big Island. I would have let them out had we had any real damage here. Carma baby!
The only structure here was an overly priced hotel that limits public access to 10 to 15 cars at a time. This building damage wasn’t even part of where people stay.
Disappointed to read so many comments about “greedy/unethical” VRBO/AirBnB owners. First, we are owners who are refunding, so stop the broad generalizations, accusations, and implications – it’s not healthy, nor respectful, particular at this time. Second our investments in Hawaii employ cleaning staff, maintenance staff, resort staff, and everyone that serves you when you are on the island. There are also going to be significant numbers of hard working people who can’t earn a living in West Maui, outside Lahaina. These people have become our friends so we would like to try and support them, where appropriate, by keeping our businesses going. Third, we have mortgages, AOAO fees, homeowners insurance, hurricane insurance, fire insurance, property taxes (rates of which are significantly higher than locals as a way to support the infrastructure) and have to pay to maintain our property from the damage tourists cause (and fail to admit to). This disaster is impacting many people. A suggestion for those complaining about us… Next time, buy trip cancellation insurance… It is designed for this exact purpose. Stop dumping your risk on small business people who have plenty of their own obligations to support in order to provide you a comfortable and enjoyable vacation. We’re invested in Maui and trying to do our part to support a devastated community.
Thanks for sharing this perspective and prudent advice. So many unknowns can provoke anxiety. We must be flexible and patient. This is a crisis, and there is nothing we can do to get answers about tourism more quickly. Meanwhile, our thoughts are with the people of Maui.
Our VRBO will not let us out of our booking in West Maui 09/02. $50K rental for 30 ppl to celebrate my grandma turning 89. Mind Blowing. At a loss for what to do, the excitement of our trip is gone and we are devastated for Lahaina. Mahalo and lots of love.
You host/hosts shjould be ashamed of themselves! I’m so sorry that this is happening with your family in what was clearly to be a very special occassion. Sending Aloha…
I am in mourning with the horrible devastating loss of Lahaina. We spend two weeks in Dec each year at our timeshare on Kaanapali Beach. Lahaina has been my happy place for over 20 years. My heart is broken for it’s loss. Please feel my hugs for the loss and to the people of Maui who a suffering 😢

Our hearts 💕 go out to the people of Lahani and the lovely island of Maui. We pray that the island will recover quickly and the Hawaiian peoples recover from the devastation and heart break of loosing lives’, homes, businesses and their traditional ceremonial artifacts.
Wencan not believe the selfishness of people worrying about reservations and vacations when the friendly people’s of Maui lands are devastated.
Again, our love of the Island of Maui and it’s peoples are in our hearts 💕 and forth coming in our minds. We send very positive thoughts and love to you all.
Praying over Maui, communities, residents, and families. I was sched to fly yesterday for time with classmate and friend of 40+years with her family on Aug 10. Saddened about all that has devastated Maui. I am supporting those in need. It is the right gesture to do. We are not promised tomorrow… so helping where possible. I still have my tix and waiting for when is best to visit Maui. Mahalo!
Hi Terry.
Aloha.
Thanks
Hi Robin.
We have no suggestion beyond inquiring with your credit card company. Based on what the utility said today, if Whaler doesn’t have power it soon should. That doesn’t impact the fact that West Maui is inaccessible and should be avoided until further notification.
Aloha.
Hi Julie.
West Maui is off until further notice. It’s hard to see that changing by then. We’ll keeping providing all information possible.
Aloha.
My husband and I have reservations in Kihei the end of October for 11 days. We are not sure if we should cancel our plans or keep them. We are so sorry for the devistation that is going on in Maui and praying for everyone. Please advise
Hi LuAnn.
That is your personal decision. There is nothing preventing you from coming.
Aloha.
Thank you,
Rachel
Hi Rachel.
We will have many updates to help keep visitors like you apprised of the changes ahead.
Aloha.
we are in the same situation, we are being told that our resort will postpone our travel up to 2 years but will not refund our money.
We were flying southwest September 28th-Oct 12th. I called to cancel and they refunded our money. Check with your airline
Our airlines is Alaska and I spoke with them Friday. They aren’t refunding tickets past 8/31 at the moment. We will see if that changes!

Hi Christine.
We’re sorry to hear that and yes we’ve heard from quite a few other people in the same situation.
Hopefully some resolution to this will surface.
Aloha.
Thank you Beat of Hawaii
Your article is well stated. Given theses horrible events on Maui,
with much thought and respect should we even consider another island? Our plans are for late October. I just want to show respect to the people of Hawaii and if they want visitors to stay away completely?
Hi Pen.
As you can read in the comments, there are wide-ranging opinions. At this time, there is no further indication that you should not travel to Maui, except for West Maui.
Aloha.
Hi Beat of Hawaii,
Thank you for taking the time.
I was asking more so about visiting another island and how the people from other islands may be feeling about visitors? Maybe I should just listen to my gut. In good conscious I could not go to Maui given the circumstances.
Hi Pen.
Thanks. Then any other island should be just fine. And that’s a great time of year. If we can help in any way, please let us know.
Aloha.
Any advice for travelers wishing to cancel, but can not get through to the property management company, My Perfect Stays. I would assume their operations have been affected, but asking for a relative. Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone affected.
Thank you,
Nancy
Hi Nancy.
Our only suggestion is checking with the credit card company.
Aloha.
Hi Gail.
South Maui – yes.
Aloha.
Hi this is Roxy we have plans for October late October late October Should we cancel our should we hold off and wait
💔😢🌺 broken hearted for “our Maui” I too have travel plans and deposit with KMB resorts. I feel like full refunds should be issued, since Maui will be in recovery, and how could this be the vacation planned and hoped for 😢
Input please about reservations in Kapalua in January? Thank you.
Hi Anne.
We don’t have any further input beyond what we’ve already given.
Aloha.
My wife and I have a trip booked to Papakea resort in Kannapali, from November 19?to December 3. Should we cancel?
Thanks.
Damian
Hi Damian.
There is so much more to do even in terms of finding untold bodies than to know what will be happening in November in Kaanapali. If you can be patient then certainly we’ll have more news about travel as soon as possible. That isn’t now.
Aloha.
People need to cancel their vacation for at least 6 months…I truly believe in staying at a resort and booking direct with resort and airline…then you don’t havento worry about refunds…too many vrbo in maui that’s why the locals find it hard to find housing…I believe it is selfish to worry about your vacation to maui now
Yes we as travelers agree with you.Whats mind blowing is Hosts refuse to give us refunds.
Thank you!
Hi Gina.
We just don’t know. We’re hopeful that the state will have a position that they express in the next day or two about travel to relatively unaffected areas of Maui. But please keep in mind that the infrastructure of the island is a shared one that covers all of Maui.
Aloha.
Aloha.
Hi Gina.
They’re absolutely no issues preventing you from going ahead with your travel plans for next week. That according to the latest advice from the state of Hawaii.
Aloha.
Thank you so much. We just don’t want to upset the people of Maui. I understand the government is ok with us coming to the east side but I’m just worried about how the locals would treat us. We don’t want to offend anyone.
Thank you.
I will be coming to Maui on the first of November and staying at the Marriott Vacation Club. Is that advisable and what about restaurants?
Hi Carole.
The honest answer is that no one knows at this time.
Aloha.
Walohia..
Hi Robyn.
We’re sure hope to know more soon that we can share. Maalaea is different of course than Lahaina or Kaanapali. It will recover far sooner in every sense other than island-wide issues impacting all of Maui.
Aloha.
Thank you BOH for being a real voice for us to count on! We appreciate your love and concern for your state
Hi Robyn.
Thanks very much! Your words mean a lot.
Aloha.
Hi Christie.
After 3 days, we’d say it is still too early to know what the situation will be like in a couple more weeks.
Aloha.
Hi Denise.
The state is clearly advising that you should not come to West Maui now.
Aloha.
People may want to rethink if they really want to book Airbnb/VRBO stays with “hosts” who live off island.
Off island ownership of Hawaii real estate is highly problematic even at the best of times.
Judi P
Mahalo!
