  1. How are they handling the 72 hour timeframe? Is it adjusted by local Hawaii time or based upon your local time. I would hate to misjudge the 72 requirement because I am working off central or pacific time and I didn’t factor in that Hawaii is 6 hours difference.

  2. When do you forsee this monster bureaucracy done away with? How is the vaccination program going there? I’ll not travel back to the islands till this stupidity ends…. Love Hawaii but your leadership is in serious question.

    1. Way beyond just in question… Last May it may have been in question, now its gone full blown stupid.

  3. Thanks so much for all of the updates. Has there been any information surrounding travel from Canada yet? Hoping to get back to our condo on Maui in the Fall.

    1. Hi Shelley.

We haven’t seen anything specific. We note that Westjet and Air Canada are partners with Hawaii Safe Travels. Other comments mentioned issues of returning to Canada.

      Aloha.

  4. Thank you for your ongoing information. I am a loyal follower and find so the site so helpful. However, your information about Maui mandatory contact tracing is incorrect. In researching yesterday for travel early June, I found Emergency Rules issued May 9, 2021 by Maui County Office of the Mayor. Rule 12d on pg 11 discusses Emergency Notification – Required. https://www.mauicounty.gov/DocumentCenter/View/125111/COM_Public-Health-Emergency-Rules?bidId=
However, if you look at the FAQ on the site, you will see exceptions you mentioned, including the option to sign a waiver.

Again, thanks so much for trying to keep us all updated on the inconsistent and ever-changing rules!!

    1. Hi Nancy.

Thanks. Good catch. Page 11 – could that be more buried? We don’t know what that means. A number of others have reported in comments that it was not even requested or mentioned on arrival. But we updated the post with that information.

      Aloha.

  5. Thank you for all the info provided in this article as well as this discussion board! I have been following the discussions very closely as we prepare for our vacation at the end of this month.
We will be spending a week in Oahu and then traveling to Kauai after. Walgreens provides testing and is an approved testing site for interisland travel. However, on the island of Oahu they don’t offer the Rapid Diagnostic Test (ID now). All they offer is the Diagnostic Lab Test (PCR) which is a NAAT test but I want to make sure that it approved for interisland travel. Can anyone at BOH or any commenters provide me an answer based on experience or what they’ve discovered?
I have attempted to call the Safe Travel’s Help Desk but have waited on hold for a very long time and have left a few messages with no return call…

    Thanks!!

    1. I googled covid testing for travel. Clicked on Hawaii pre travel covid 19 testing options for Hawaiian airline. Its will take you straight to their pre travel test options site. Select your departure city. So its should be Hawaiian Islands and select Honolulu press go. Scroll all the way down to State approved inter island travel testing options. You’ll see a list of places that has the testing. Please know that call places here for screening only and not medical reason will have a fee. You will also need to schedule online only. Diagnostic labs is good and fast and by far the cheapest I found for $125. The results came back the next day. Hope that helps.

    2. Scott,

Yes, the national kidney is located on site in Oahu (we got ours done at the airport). We got our rapid test prior to leaving for Kauai. I think it was $175 and we got our results in time when we arrived in Kauai. There are National Guard in Kauai helping with the lines for getting you through the lines. They can look up your results that you uploaded even if Safe travels hadn’t processed it from red to green. Hope this helps. If you have further questions, happy to answer.

      1. Patrick G,

Thank you for help! How long before your flight did you have the test performed? I have read that for rapid tests, results take between 1-6 hrs but most people are reporting results back within an hour. Was there a long wait to take the test?

        Thanks,
        Scott

  6. Thanks for your helpful article, I have a layover in Maui on my way back to LAX (mainland) will I need to get a Covid test 72 hours before I land in Maui even if I’m not leaving the airport?

    1. Hi Bridgett.

That should not be necessary to long as you remain in transit at the airport. To confirm, it is best to inquire with the state’s Safe Travels help desk at 855-599-0888 between 10 a.m. and 10 p.m. Hawaii Standard Time.

      Aloha.

      1. Hi, I’ve tried to call this number several times, but cannot speak to a human. I am flying through hawaii on my way to DC, but only in the airport for 3 hours. I’m trying to figured out if we need to to the tests or not. I’m flying united and it says no, but I’m hearing conflicting information. Is there an actual person I can speak to? Thank you

  7. I m told you need a negative test to leave Hawaii to fly back to the mainland? Is that true?

  8. Hello,
Frist of all, thank you for the very helpful article!
    I have a question on Inter-Island Travel:
If we arrive to Honolulu on a Wednesday and plan to travel on to Kauai on Sunday morning, does it matter how long we were in Hawaii before getting our inter-island test for Kauai? i.e. Are we ok to get tested in Honolulu at 10am on Thursday, 70 hours before HNL-LIH flight, but less than a day after arriving in Hawaii?
As I understand it, Kauai rejoining the Safe Travels Program makes this itinerary allowed, but just wanted to be sure.
    Thanks Again!
    -Trevor

    1. Hi Trevor.

The rules do not state a minimum time in Hawaii before that 2nd test. “Take a pre-travel test from one of the State of Hawaii’s Hawaii Inter-Island Trusted Testing and Travel Partners within 72 hours of departing to Kauai.”

      Aloha.

  9. Hello,
    I have a question on Inter-Island Travel:
If we arrive to Honolulu on a Wednesday and plan to travel on to Kauai on Sunday morning, does it matter how long we were in Hawaii before getting our inter-island test for Kauai? i.e. Are we ok to get tested in Honolulu at 10am on Thursday, 70 hours before HNL-LIH flight, but less than a day after arriving in Hawaii?
As I understand it, Kauai rejoining the Safe Travels Program makes this itinerary allowed, but just wanted to be sure.

  10. Thank you for this article. Something that I found missing from all sources is: What happens if a flight is delayed? Does that render the Covid test invalid for those who took it exactly or a few hours after the 72hours required window?
Are those traveler automatically barred from flying unless they accept to go into quarantine or is there a fast test they can take at the airport to still be able to forego the quarantine as planned?

    1. Hi ECP.

We aren’t seeing the prior language on the state’s website either. The rules have been that testing must occur within 72 hours of the scheduled departure of the mainland to Hawaii flight. Our best suggestion is that you contact the Safe Travels help desk at 855-599-0888 between 10 a.m. and 10 p.m. Hawaii Standard Time.

      Aloha.

    2. Our flight was delayed 3 hours in March. Our test was taken 71 hours 45 minutes prior to departure. We had no issues and were not required to quarantine on arrival in Oahu. Originally, the state’s website mentioned flight delays as out of passengers control and not an issue however, I can’t find that language anywhere on the website today. I wouldn’t worry about a flight delay.

    3. Aloha EPC
The state of Hawaii goes from your departure time on your airline ticket. Doesn’t matter if your early or late, that’s the time that state will use.

  11. Thank you for this information. I scheduled our test 71 hours before the scheduled flight and have received a negative result, but now I’m worried if my flight gets delayed. I only have an hour wiggle room.
Will they make an exception for a delayed flight?

    1. Hi Lori.

You need to test within 72 hours of your “scheduled” departure time from the mainland to Hawaii. So a flight delay will not count against you.

      Aloha.

  12. I took a rapid test at Walgreens and received a negative result. I then found out it’s not the correct test when i uploaded my results. I leave tomorrow morning. What can i do? Help!!!

    1. Tippy….how did this turn out? We want to use Walgreens also and are unsure id we can use any tesr other than the PCR.

  13. Hi BOH!
I’m flying Southwest to Oahu and am not clear if there is another screening process upon arrival. I’ve heard there is a wristband available at the airport before departure that allows one to skip that process. Can’t find any info anywhere. Thoughts?
    Thanks so Much!
    Nancy

  14. I’m currently in Kona, arrived 4/21, with a negative Covid test prior to arriving. I see we can travel to Oahu without another test since arriving. If I fly to Oahu tomorrow 4/26, and find a flight on 4/29, to return to KOA, and fly home to mainland the evening of 4/29 (so basically book a flight prior to my original return flight and lay over in KOA), do I need an additional test in Oahu to layover in koa for 3-4 hours? I don’t want to change my existing return flight with American Airlines, and would be booking with Hawaiian airlines to return during the day of 4/29 from Oahu to Kona. Do I need to schedule a repeat test in Oahu to lay over in KOA, and register the flight from Oahu to Koa with travel.Hawaii.gov?
    Any advice is greatly appreciated.
    Thank you for your time.

    1. Hi Lynn.

Perhaps best to ask the state directly about that, since you will have multiple itineraries and we aren’t clear how that would be handled on arrival at Kona. Safe Travels help desk is at 855-599-0888 between 10 a.m. and 10 p.m. Hawaii Standard Time.

      Aloha.

      1. What are the KOA people going to do? Quarantine is 10 days locked in a room or leave the island, whichever comes first. Lynn is leaving the island right after she arrives on the island. I assume not leaving the airport. I thought lots of people over the past year would show up without the proper test and be able to fly back instead of being locked in a room or jail?

  15. Hi ! Thanks for putting all this together, that’s of great help.
We plan to spend two weeks in Hawai in August, one week in Big island, on week in Maui.

I’m trying to figure out how we could arrange the trip the best considering the interisland travel regulations.

We will arrive and depart from Big island but didn’t figure out yet the internal flights.

Upon arrival in KOA Big island, if we don’t leave the airport and fly straight to Maui, do we need to follow any specific protocol ? Or the test we will have taken on mainland is covering us all the way to final destination ?

Or if i organize the trip the other way around : do we need to follow any specific protocole on our last day in Hawai, if we fly to Big island , and there get our flight to mainland?
Said another way, if we do Maui>Big Island>Mainland on our last day, do we need to get tested in Maui in order to be able to get to Big island and catch our transpacific flight ?

    Thanks !

    1. Hi Antoine.

Thanks. This is fast changing and it is the state’s intention to change this for mainland arrivals before then. Thus would suggest waiting to see how this unfolds. At present, however, it is our understanding that so long as you remain in transit you will only be required to comply with the final destination’s requirements.

      Aloha

  16. Hello,
Please help me. My flight is going to depart from SJC on monday at 6:50am, stopover in Maui before arrive in honolulu( final destination). About 72 hours time frame covid testing. I have to take my test after 6:50am on Saturday right? Or 72hours from Maui departure time? Thank you so much! Have a nice day!

  17. Thank you for this great up-to-date newsletter. My wife and I leave on the 6th of May for Kauai and then will travel to the Big Island later. We have both been vaccinated and have set up our appointments for a COVID test too. There is no spot on the Hawaii Safe Travel website to upload our vaccination card. We are planning to bring the original with us although we would rather just have a copy of it. At this time, which is the best to bring?

    Thank you for the help.

    1. Hi John.

Thank you. The exemption for vaccination will initially only be valid for Hawaii residents who were vaccinated in Hawaii. Subsequently that will be rolled out to mainland visitors who were vaccinated elsewhere.

      Aloha.

    1. We came from denver as well, Usually you pre clear at the last leg of departure, we were supposed to be cleared in San Fran but the system was down and ended up pre clearing in Honolulu! Big line but it went by so fast!!!

    2. Hi,
Thank you for the info. If I have a few hour stopover in Honolulu on my way to Maui, am I allowed to leave the airport? Do I have to retest for covid?

      Thanx,perry

      1. Hi Perry.

If you leave the airport, at this point in time you are required to comply with the rules of interisland travel. So yes you would need to. Also, you can contact the state’s Safe Travels help desk at 855-599-0888 between 10 a.m. and 10 p.m. Hawaii Standard Time.

        Aloha.

  18. Aloha

My husband and I depart Dallas Texas April 26th at 9:00am central to Maui with a layover in california. We are scheduled to leave California at 4:30pm pacific. Our Rapid ID now test is scheduled for 9:30am central time on April 24th. Will we meet the ” within 72 hour” timeframe? Thank you

P.s. im trying to post my comment but its not going through. Hopefully this one does.

    1. Hi Claudia.

The rule is within 72 hours of your flight from California to Maui. The flight from DFW is irrelevant to this. Thus your two days in advance should be fine.

      Aloha.

  19. Aloha,
Traveling from Tampa to Maui on United through Denver,May3rd. We plan to test 3 days before at Walgreens Rapid test, and post on the Hawaii safe travel site. Am I forgetting anything?

  20. My wife and I are traveling to the Big Island in early May. We have both been vaccinated. Her card has a QR code on is; mine doesn’t. Is that a problem?

  21. Aloha my flight to Kona from Honolulu is May 1st departing at 1:10pm. When do I need to take my testing in order to make the 72 hours restriction for it to count? Any help will be appreciated.

    Mahalo

    1. Hi Jody.

There is no testing required when flying interisland from Kona to Honolulu.

      Aloha.

  22. Okay I need some help with my Safe Travels trip information. Here are my trip details:

6/19 – LAS to HNL (1 hour layover), HNL to OGG

    6/22 – OGG to HNL

    6/27 – HNL to LAS

I understand I need to create two different trip – one for my layover in HNL and one for my flight to Maui. My question is about the return flight information. Do I need to enter it for my layover trip? And for my Maui trip would I put the day I leave Maui (6/22) or the day I leave Hawaii (6/27).

And just to double check, I don’t need to create a trip for when I fly to Oahu from Maui correct?

  23. So we got tested at 11am pacific time on Tuesday, our flight leaves at 10:55 from San Francisco to Honolulu. We made it into the 72hrs by 5 minutes. The results will be accepted correct? We will be on plane all boarded and headed to Honolulu by the the 72 hrs. Wondering if that will be an issue ? Everyone says we should be ok since it is indeed within the 72 hrs. We saw on the Hawaii travel restrictions to test on a Tuesday after 1055am if our flight left at 1055 on a Friday. Any thoughts ?

  24. Need clarification, I’m flying from Chicago (10am cst departure) with a layover in Honolulu before departing to Kauai at 4pm Hawaii time. Everything I read says take the test 72 hours before your flight departs from the mainland. However the way I’m reading United’s website regarding my flight, my 72 hr starts on the flight from HNL to Kauai. If that’s the case the. I lose a full day of testing availability due to time difference. Since My first flight is straight into Hawaii can anyone confirm when my 72 hrs starts. Is it the Chicago departure to HNL or the HNL departure to Kauai

  25. I wanted to post an update. Leaving NJ for California tomorrow; flying to Maui Thursday. We went to Walgreens for our required COVID NAAT PCR ID Now test and we received the test results back in 90 minutes!!! We just need to do the online Questionnaire to get our QR codes and then we good to go! Mahalo BOH and Aloha from NJ!!

    1. Hi Steven.

Thanks for that update. We appreciate you letting us know. 90 minutes is great.

      Aloha.

  26. Hello, I want to know if my proof of negative test from within 72 hours of departure has to be within 72 hours of the test or within 72 hours of within the time I get the results? Thank you.

    1. Hi Janice.

The test needs to be taken within 72 hours of scheduled departure on the last flight between the mainland and Hawaii.

      Aloha.

    2. If you depart the mainland at 10:00 am PDT on Thursday, you need to TAKE the NAAT PCR test at or after 10:00 am PDT on Monday so that’s 72 hours ahead of time. If you are taking the test outside the Pacific Time Zone, adjust the time accordingly. For example, 10:00 am PDT = 1:00 pm EDT.

  27. Hello!
Me and my boyfriend are traveling to Honolulu this Friday from Denver colorado. We have schedule our appointments at Walgreens for the pcr covid test. The lab that they use has up on their web that results come in 1-2 days after collecting sample. They say 3-5 days but the lab states that only 1-2 days. I am stressing this so much, there is also an option to do the rapid test that Walgreens also offers, it comes in 24 hrs or less. The thing is that only appts available for rapid test are weds. Meaning that we would not meet the 72 hrs, it will now be less than 72. Our last leg of departure is San Fran, at 10:55am, 11:55am Denver time. That is why we scheduled for tomorrow Tuesday at 12pm, so we could meet that 72 hr timeframe required by Hawaii. Now the debate is trusting that the results from pcr test will indeed come on time or if we should do rapid test on weds, but what if Hawaii doesn’t accept because is less time than the 72 hr timeframe?? Please help!

    1. Hi Angie.

We recommend you not deviate from the “within 72 hours of scheduled departure” rule under any circumstances.

      Aloha.

    2. It’s “within” 72 hours of departing. If you leave Friday at noon but take the test Tuesday at 11:59 am that’s more than 72 hours and they will not accept the results. But if you take the test Wednesday it is within the 72 hours and you’ll be just fine

      1. Thanks for your reply! We leave at 10:55 from San Francisco, San Fran is an hour less than Denver time that is why on Tuesday after 12 pm (mnt). Ended up getting swabbed at 12:45 bc of the long line. Will they literally not accept our results ? The web said to get tested any time after 11:55…. will those 5 mnts matter?

  28. I am def overthinking this. My boyfriend and I leave to Honolulu on Friday, last leg of departure is San Fran our flight leaves at 10:55 am. 11:55 Denver time. We scheduled our appts for tomorrow Tuesday at 12 pm. We did end up doing the pcr, the lab says the average time to rerun the results is 1-2 days. I don’t know if we should trust it…. I am freaking out that they won’t come in on time. We also have the option to do the rapid test that has results within 24 hrs that is provided by Walgreens as well, but appts are not available till Wednesday… meaning is less than the 3 day (72) hour timeframe… if we get tested on weds instead of Tuesday will we need to be quarantined? Should I just stick to our Tuesday’s appt??

    PLEASE HELP HAHAHA

    1. Hi Angie.

Good luck with all that. Not sure what kind of help you need that we can offer assistance with. Please let us know how it all goes.

      Aloha.

    2. Hi Annie. My experience with the Walgreen’s rapid ID test is a 24 hour turnaround or faster, and it is accepted. As long as it is within 72 hours from your departure from SFO, you’ll be fine. To clarify, it doesn’t have to be exactly 72 hours, just no longer than 72 hours – and uploaded to your device before leaving mainland.
Hope this helps! Have tons of fun <3
      Aloha, C

    3. I’ve had both the PCR/RT-PCR and the Rapid Diagnostic Test or ID Now Test done at Walgreens. They are both NAAT tests and accepted by Hawaii. It was difficult to get the Rapid Test. I had to book it 2 weeks in advance. I booked the OCR Test one day in advance. The results to the Rapid Test came in 2 hours and the PCR/RT-PCR came in 26 hours later. The correct time is the time from San Francisco which is 10:55. Your test is at 12:00pm which is 11am SFO time. Do not get your test done any earlier than 11:00. I had my test done at 1pm and the person that gave me the test reported it at 1245pm which was 15 minutes earlier than I was really there. 15 minutes earlier can cause a problem for you as it would be too. Just make sure you get the right time. I have read this has been a problem at Walgreens and people have had to have it corrected. 15 minutes fir me was nothing because I scheduled it at 71 hours before my flight, you have it scheduled at 71 hours and 55 minutes which could be a problem if not reported exactly. I would wait in line at the right time and tell the person that you want to make sure that the time reported is not before 11am. I would keep the Rapid appointment just in case. It comes back in less than 24 hours, usually within 2 hours. You can always cancel the Rapid if you receive your results the following day before your Rapid test. It will take at least 24 hours or longer. Both of mine were at 26 hours. Hope that helps. Thanks fir allowing me to reply.

  29. Hello! We are planning to stay at three locations while in Oahu. Where it list “Destination Location” on Safe Travel, would we only add our first location? If we need to add all three, do we need to “Add Trips”?

  30. Hello, My family is planning to Honolulu on July, my question is if I already got the vaccine, do I need to do the COVID-19 test before I get to the airline? Thank you.

  31. Hello,
We are traveling from Seattle to Kauai with a layover in HNL for about 2 hours. Do I need to add two trips ( SEA TO HNL and HNL TO LIH ) in the Safe Travels website?

    1. Yes! I didn’t understand this and had to rush to add the second leg during our layover in Honolulu.

    2. When you log onto the Hawaii Safe Travels website, you create TWO itineraries. One for the Seattle to Hawaii leg, the 2nd for the inter-island connection flight. Very easy to do, as there’s a + sign on the Add Itinerary option to add the second flight. Aloha!

  32. Good morning

We are traveling to Kauai from Florida thru LAX Friday May 7th. I have already registered the 2 of us. My question is what day do we need to get tested. It says 72 hours. So should we schedule at Walgreens on Tuesday? Monday is too soon correct? My husband is a truck driver and not home Tuesday or Thursday but I can get him tested in Georgia Tuesday if needed. I just want to ensure we receive the results but not considered too soon.

I would appreciate any feed back. Thank you and have a great day!

    Wendy P

    1. Hi Wendy.

Within 72 hours of the flight departure from the mainland to Hawaii (not the flight from Florida)- and not a moment before is the answer.

      Aloha.

    2. Don’t forget to calculate the 72 hours on California (PDT) time, not Florida time. So if your flight is from LAX to HNL, for example, and departing at 10:00 am PDT, you would need to get your COVID test (in Florida) no earlier than 1:00 pm EDT at the approved Testing Sites (Walgreens is national). Have a safe trip!

  33. So, If I’m traveling to Honolulu from the mainland but I stop at a neighbor island, such as Maui for a layover that lasts an hour or two, do I need to take the covid test for Maui or Honolulu, or do I need to take the test for both? please let me know. thanks

  34. If I’m traveling to Honolulu but I have stop at Maui for a layover for an hour or two, do I need to take the covid test for maui or Honolulu?

  35. Has anyone gotten the Rapid ID Now test through CareNow with American Airlines? My understanding is that if you are flying American, you can go to any CareNow and get the Rapid POC ID Now Test, but I’m trying to verify that. I know they give one at DFW on the day of departure, but they don’t open early enough for us to do that before our flight at 9 am. The closer our trip gets, the more concerned I am about making sure we do this the correct way.

  36. Aloha guys,
Just a heads up that Southwest Airlines is also offering PreClear to Hawaii from its California gates.
    southwest.com/coronavirus/hawaii/#faq
Stay safe. Mahalo for continuing to provide the clearest info out there.

      1. If we fly from Kauai to Honolulu do we need to take a Covid test? We are flying back to Kauai the same day. Do we need to take a Covid test to enter Kauai?

  37. Connecting in HNL to Molokai on Mokulele Airlines. I understand that connecting passengers in HNL are OK but this flight will require a change of terminal (to the “commuter terminal” which is a short bus ride) meaning I technically exit the airport. I’ll go right to my Molokai flight but it will outside of the 72-hour test time due to the long flight from Chicago.

Anyone know how it works with Mokulele? Given the planes hold only eight it can’t be that complicated but I don’t want to be caught in some kind of COVID technicality. Thanks!

    1. Hi Steve.

You’re the first to ask about transiting to MKK. We’d suggest you check with Mokulele first.

      Aloha.

    2. Updating my original post.

-regardless of airline, if you “keep going” and your final flight departing the mainland to Hawaii was within the 72-hour window, you are good on neighbor islands (Except Kauai, currently). I went ORD-HNL-OGG-MKK and had no issue. Need to add flights to “ my trips” on the COVID app but it’s quick and they can help at the airports.

      – connect overnight or hop islands and it gets complicated. You can overnight in HNL, for example, and go to a neighbor island but if your departure is outside of the 72-hours, you will have problems when you arrive. Nobody checks at the departure airport. You could be sent back to HNL.

      – if stuck at HNL and you need a COVID test to move on, there is a test site at the airport run by the leukemia society and the turnaround is apparently a few hours. Around $125.

      – if on Hawaiian get a wristband at your mainland departure airport! Saves a lot of time and hassle. It took me 20 mins to deal with COVID procedures on arrival at HNL (I was on AA) and I was one of the first off the plane. There was a long line from another flight ahead of me. Those last off our full 777 could have easily been in line an hour. Another in our party flew Hawaiian, had a wrist band and walked past the line. Took me 30 mins at OGG from the back of a full 717.

      – mokulele airlinesis just like any other inter-island airline just from a different terminal. The small planes are way more fun though!

Hopefully the Inter-island restrictions will end soon.

      1. Thanks Steve, You have answered many of my questions. Just to be clear, as of right now, when landing at HNL and staying on O’ahu for five days before proceeding to Big Island then I will need another covid test, correct?

      2. Steve B – I’m doing ORD – HNL – LIH. Does my 72 hr window Start from my departure in ORD? Who in the Chicagoland area did your covid test and what was the turn around time?

      3. Hi Steve,

I’m doing a flight from Las to HNL to OGG. I noticed you had layovers in your trip as well. Did you write down any return flight information for the layover part of your trip? I’ve gotten mixed answers about this so I’m trying to figure it out.
