As I write, Hawaii’s legislature is considering banning smoking on famous Waikiki Beach. The bill, which is expected to pass, will take effect immediately.
The law is designed to keep cigarette butts off of the beach, while still allowing smoking on nearby sidewalks.
Waikiki beach has been through a significant transformation in recent years and is being restored into a beautiful and magical place once again. Keeping it clean and in top condition is a priority for the City and County of Honolulu. When staying nearby, I’ve often hear sounds of of the beach being cleaned during the night. They are doing a great job.
What’s your opinion? Let us know if you think the smoking ban is a good idea.

I think this is a great idea. My husband and I visit Waikiki at least once a year and having to breathe someone’s cigarette smoke instead of the cool ocean breeze is awful. Seeing butts in the sand is awful too. Normally, I’ll pick up garbage I see on the beach,
but I’m not really willing to pick up something I know was in a strangers mouth. This law would make my experience in Waikiki
exactly what it should be, Paradise!
This would be awesome. It’s what all beaches need.
