Closures, Furloughs and Terminations Explode in Hawaii

Another day in Hawaii as the economy sinks further and businesses come to grips with this uncertainty. Putting the information together was shocking, even for us here. Many businesses indicate that they will not be returning and a huge number say that the terminations will now become permanent.

Hawaii has always had a high cost of living because of its location and dependence on imports, while at the same time, ranking low in personal income. Travel has for a long time been the leading industry for the state. With that gone, everyone suffers because tourism directly or indirectly impacts most households. Reading the numbers below, we were struck silent.

It’s been estimated the situation may not get back to Pre-COVID days for an entire decade! The road ahead may be long with many turns. “To shut down the entire state again, businesses are going to die,” said Tina Yamaki, president of Retail Merchants of Hawaii

As Big Island’s Mauna Kea Resort’s representative said, “It is now apparent that the State of Hawaii has no clear timeline for reopening plans… We are uncertain given the rapidly-changing situation how our circumstances will continue to evolve.”

Below is an incomplete list Hawaii travel businesses’ that have issued formal warnings as required regarding employees being furloughed, terminated, laid-off, or working reduced hours. The numbers are growing exponentially.

Grand Hyatt Kauai stated, “The demand for travel, events, and hospitality services will take substantially longer to resume than previously anticipated.” They indicated that what was hoped would be temporary separations, have now become permanent.  What we are now seeing is that many of those businesses impacted are not continuing with furloughs, but rather have terminated employees.

Below is just a partial look at the number of jobs associated with the WARN notifications, as reported by the State of Hawaii Department of Labor. Some aspects of Hawaii travel are not even represented, like the vacation rental industry, which has also come to a virtually complete standstill.

  1. Unlike you folks on the mainland we have very limited medical facilities especially on the neighbor islands. You have the luxury of being able to ignore science and the have a health care system to bale you out….even if you don’t have insurance. We don’t and if you can’t follow our rules vacation somewhere else.

    1. Mark,
Well said! And this is the entire problem on the mainland. People are refusing to socially distance or even wear masks. And I have been around too many tourists who trash wherever they go dont bother to respect the locals or the environment around them. Hopefully this will send jerks elsewhere so that those of us who are able willing to do all of the above can be the ones to visit.

    2. Exactly the kind of remarks that create division. Hawaii will sink into oblivion and never recover anytime soon. Let me know how your remarks is helping create understanding. The state is already broke from ridiculous unnecessary spending. Do you know that stay at home orders are unconstitutional? Wearing mask and social distancing is not a fix all. However, it does help to create a safer environment to those who are highly vulnerable like me. I am high risk guarantee to go on a ventilator if I get it, but there is a right way and a wrong way to every situation.
Politicians have no clue and fake news is everywhere. Do you know that corona viruses are nothing new. Every virus out there becomes immune to preventative medication and the doses need to be increased to keep it in check. Do some homework and see for yourself. The information is everywhere. Ever notice that the health industry constantly uses the phase medical practice? All the schooling of learning to be a medical professional, is not an absolute. This change of venue in new diseases will never stop for the rest of your life or mine.

      1. Too much Fox News propaganda in your comments to spend time replying. I sincerely hope you are living close to a hospital that can provide adequate care if you are wrong.

        1. So true about the Fox News observation. Can you imagine Walter Cronkite tapping into people’s worst instincts just to boost ratings.
Lot of money in fear and anger, Some people just need to hate it seems.

        2. That’s because you have no answers with facts. Just for your info, I don’t watch Fox news. I am born and raised in Hawaii and have friends I talk to every week who are suffering. Keep up the good work. Hawaii will soon have food lines if they keep heading down this path of a clueless direction. Hawaii’s own news channels are reporting the Island news and the destruction of the people, businesses and the life style that Hawaii has to offer. I am a successful business man and have been blessed with all I have. That doesn’t make me better than anyone else who chooses to do the right thing and make intelligent decisions. You just made an accusation that you have no clue what you are talking about. You don’t know my life, but somehow in your mind you know my preference of news sources. That only shows disrespect and clueless thinking which most people who can’t defend their own thinking resort to.

If you live in the Islands, you surely can’t believe you are helping your own people.

      2. If people are going to be critical of one news agency. You should also look at what other news groups report. Remember in 1996 when NBC reported about Richard Jewell the supposed bomber in Atlanta. They were wrong and paid a hefty fine. Recently, Nick Sandman, CNN was also wrong and pays a hefty fine. Chuck Todd, on Meet the Press, is lazy in fact checking and just plays parts of an interview with AG Barr to further his ideology. Just today Alan Dershowitz file a $300 million dollar lawsuit against CNN for their willful, deliberate, malicious effort to destroy my credibility. In other words they lie about what he said.

So, lets be fair, you may thing FOX is biased in their reporting, others may think CNN, NBC, ABC and others are biased in their reporting.

Time to stop all the finger pointing and biased reporting. The tv news is no longer news it is opinion. We will be in deep trouble in this country and the divide will just get worst if don’t stop being so critical about each other. Remember we are all Americans and United we stand, and divided we will far.

        1. Fox is NOT news. Its entertainment. They were sued for lying and they argued in court they were not news but entertainment so now they are free to lie all they want. Check it out its a Fact

          1. Hey Paul, In 2009 ABC report, Jack Tapper, defended FOX News when the Obama Declared that FOX was not a news agency, remember. Then in 2018 FOX defends CNN when a the Trump administration wanted to bar one of their reporters. Also, look who are paying these large settlements for reporting false news. NBC with Richard Jewell, CNN with Nick Sandman and now a $300 million suit from Alan Dershowitz. There is enough blame to go around but don’t say just one is lying to the American people. The news isn’t what it was 30 or 40 years ago. People are much more polarized by these “FAKE NEWS” reporting, on both side. Sit back take a deep breath and try your best to find the truth. I do that by listening to both side and I even watch some foreign news reports and get some facts or an opinion from someone who doesn’t have a horse in this race.

  2. Just made the very difficult decision to cancel our trip planned for next May. Even with the soft opening in October, it sounds like it will take at least a year or so for Hawaii to bounce back, and I’m not entirely sure it is safe for tourists to be over there right now anyway. Truth be told, there doesn’t seem to be any safe place in the U.S. right now with all of the hate and anger that is going on.

Not sure if or when we will get to visit the beautiful islands again, but I wish everyone who lives there much aloha and God’s blessings for recovery.

  3. More lives have been destroyed by the actions of the Governor and the state keeping tourists off the island than would have died had the state remained open with health precautions. The devastation has resulted in several of my fellow business owners taking their life, falling off the AA wagon and going back to drinking, and watching their savings wash out to sea.

As a wise Hawaiian native shared with me the other day, “We never shut the islands down when AIDS was killing our locals. With AIDS we knew the way to stop the spread yet no one did anything.”

Our state is killing us by destroying our income. The pain and destruction will be felt for years and possibly into the ‘30s. At least those against people operating Air B&Bs on the island can gloat while standing in the food line with their neighbors looking down at falling real estate prices.

    1. I am sorry about loss of life but if you are killing yourself over your business you have bigger problems that just a shut down. And if your an alcoholic seek help. No excuse to kill yourself.

  4. I love Maui had a restaurant, home and
Timeshare there. Moved back to mainland
to help my 95 year old mother 3 years ago
Mom died and wanted to come back in
2020 But Covid ended that. I am down in
FL now just bought a new home. I determined
That who knows when Maui will every open
Unfortunately. In Florida all is open and I Mean
    Every thing.+ Hotels and restaurants.

    1. Hi Rob, former Kona resident here. Now back in So Cal and looking to move to Sarasota, FL (we love it there). I can’t even get a direct flight from SAN into Tampa to meet up with our realtor. Enjoy FL!
      Cheri

        1. That’s a fantastic beach. Sarasota has evolved into a first class cultural center.   We lived on LBK for 19 years before moving to Kauai. You’ll miss the green mountains and the red tide is an continual problem, but the sunsets are spectacular and the bars on Siesta key really rock. Enjoy.

  5. Aloha from Hawaii.

I drove through waikiki Saturday and its amazing how many places are boarded up.

We lost at least 100 restaurants and over 50 well known ones. Thats not including the small ones who quietly served a local spot like in Kalihi.

Ala moana mall, the largest open air mall on the planet was a ghost town on a Saturday at noon.

We are devastated and as someone who worked with large and small businesses for 15 years here helping with their HR i can tell you i see dozens of my business associates and former customers shutting down and will sell their property when things come back, but they are gone.

This will leave hawaii a scared landscape for years, possibly decades especially since we already had a net loss of local residents the last few years because of the high cost of living.

I hope it gets better, but I know it won’t happen soon.

    1. Thomas P.

I am a local boy living in San Diego right now,but I am retiring next June or so and moving back to the Islands. Keep the faith, because I will run for office and if I become the next Governor,I will save my Island home and it’s people that I love so much. I have some great ideas on how to bring Hawaii back to life again. With that said, I am not alone. I have a great support group already and have visited a few of the Islands to talk with local officials to check where their hearts are at for Hawaii. You would be amazed at how many don’t really care. I could tell by the enthusiasm in their voices. You can already see that from the present leaders already.

  6. I have been reading many of the posts here and even posted once or twice. I have read how hard this closure is on the locals. I feel sorry because they may have lost a job. Some even blame tourist for some of their problems. Don’t feel sorry for yourselves you still have a home, hopefully a job, when this passes and a beautiful Island. What do you say to the people in California and Oregon? Many of these people have lost homes, jobs and in some cases family members to these wild fires. Granted some in Hawaii have lost a job but that pales in comparison. Be thankful that you still have a beautiful Island, a home, people willing to help and hopefully a job in the future.

    1. Couldn’t agree more and add Washington as friends have lost homes and we sit in smoke so thick I cannot see my neighbors’ homes. We will be able to travel again, but many have lost their lives and all they own.

  7. I had planned a vacation trip last year to fly to Kauai next month (Oct) and visit my parents up in the Wailua Homesteads area, but I decided to postpone until August of next year hoping things will be much better then, I’d like to visit the island of my roots.

  8. I feel sorry for all that are losing their jobs. This virus is devastating to all the businesses large and small. Some small business will never return. People write that Hawaii is too dependent on tourist. I have to agree but what is the alternative? Hawaii is an island, if you want manufacturing jobs almost all raw materials have to be imported. It is expensive to live there too, so wages would have to reflect this and manufacturing wages have to be higher. You could demand more government jobs but there is a limit as to how many are really needed. Also for the government to operate they need money and that would mean raising taxes on all. So, as I see it, the most effective solution is the one resource you have and that is a beautiful island. Sad to say “you can not have your cake and eat it too.” As I see it, you can not keep the tourist out and have a thriving economy without them. What is the solution, I don’t know, you tell me.

    1. IF, the sugar and pineapple industries were still going strong today, Hawaii wouldn’t be too dependant on the tourism industry for jobs and revenue

      1. Those products will never come back. Cuban sugar, Midwestern beet sugar, and Thai coconuts can all be had at a fraction of the cost of similar products grown and processed in Hawaii. And the administrative costs incurred trying to deal with the myriad, mind-numbingly slow Hawaiian bureaucracies and their crazy business-killing permitting and regulations are insane. Land and labor costs are way too high in HI, too…And shipping costs for your perishable, limited-shelf-life agriculture products are prohibitively expensive. Agriculture is a romantic pipe dream. So, you’re stuck using your natural advantage, and that is tourism (and maybe Maui onions). Get it back before you all become permanently unemployed.

  9. We here at Kope Kabana pray for all of our friends on Hawaii. We have aloha for you all. Our business has been affected. We are a Kona coffee farm and retailer. Thinking of all of you. Mahalo. Thank you.

  10. It’s time to open up & get back to work. Protect the vulnerable, but the states’ approach is stupidity plain and simple.

  11. Been going to Hawaii for years.Probably will never go back.
Will not wear a muzzle(mask) on the plane.
Will not take a test to spend my money in Hawaii.
Comments from locals thru this whole ordeal sealed the deal. The hate us people who spent money visiting their islands!
    Fear is a powerful tool!

    1. Understand how you feel. I am a member of a number of Hawaii-related online communities and it has been disappointing, to say the very least, how some locals were so quick to back the ban on tourism and shut down the Hawaiian economy even though so many people on the islands depended on tourism to make a living.

To be fair, though, many people on the mainland were just as selfish and stupid, and those spouting off the most were the ones who were not being hurt by the lock-downs.

      1. I do understand how he feels, and do partially agree. Refusal to deal with the draconian, two-week-imprisonment (or now more likely, pre-test, phone-ap prison bracelet, and slightly shorter confinement) is spot on. Those requirements are ridiculous and border on tyranny.

However, refusal to submit to wearing a mask is insane. You want this crap to be over? We all do! HELP by wearing your damned mask and staying socially distant. If it weren’t for people with attitudes like that guy above, we’d be much farther along toward ending this scourge, not just in HI but everywhere. For crying out loud! Wear your mask when you’re in public. Yes, it sucks, but doesn’t suck as much as catching this crap…or worse, giving it to some other unsuspecting soul! He is right about the “locals” and their commentary, though. Pretty disgusting seeing this brand of “aloha” from these people.

    2. It’s not that hard to wear a mask when you are around others, if everyone does it Covid spread would be reduced.
Getting tested is also a proven path to reducing spread to others.
Not wanting to do either simply proves you are more concerned about yourself and being mildly inconvenienced then
helping us all get through this.
Nobody hear “hates” tourists, we are just very tired of the intensely self focused ones.
You sound like you are a victim of the wave of narcissism that is currently washing over our country and will define the times when
history is written. Not your fault dude and sadly you’re not alone.
      Aloha

    3. Not sure where you get your information about hating tourists. Yes we currently have strict rules on Kauai which 99% of us follow resulting in 0 active cases. Life for many is difficult right now but the residents with financial resources are actively helping those out of work. The state has banned foreclosures and free food, produce, meat and fish is readily available. We did this after hurricanes, floods and now doing it again to protect our community. And once this pandemic passes we will welcome back tourists who respect our lifestyle and beautiful island. But we have no desire to another Florida.

      1. Mark W.,

Ask the tourist who have been robbed, beaten and disrespected while on vacation in Hawaii. This is nothing new.

          1. Paul, Crimes are committed on both tourist and local. The problem is there are no real consequences for their actions. I have seen too many times where people are arrested and have ex. 27 arrests and 12 convictions and they are in their late 20’s or early 30’s. Many times people are arrested for a crime while they are out on probation. There doesn’t seem to be any real consequences for people that commit crime in Hawaii.

    4. I lived on Kauai for a total of 15 years. We used a tax refund to leave in 2007 cost of living was to high with 2 children to support, my pale daughter would come home from school saying she wished her skin was brown so more kids would play with her, only 1/3 of the third graders were passing state standard testing, and fearing the coming dip in the economy would hurt Hawaii. The 2007 economy dip certainly doesn’t even compare to what they are dealing with now. Sadly though, it is the bad experiences that are remembered and shared more than the good ones. Yes, some tourists aren’t treated well, many are spoken of behind their backs in a rude and disrespectful way. It is difficult to fit in with some when you live there (though we had good friends from diverse backgrounds). Research Hawaii and reverse racism and you will find plenty examples. We have found more ‘Aloha Spirit’ in the bible belt than what is left in Hawaii.

  12. And the the democrat gov is going to ask for other state tax payers to bail them out sorry its going to be a long road to recovery!

    1. as a country we have always helped other states in need of help. This is no different. Blue states have been bailing out and supporting red states for many years. Without the blue states the red states would have nothing.

      1. Paul C.

Show the facts to back up your statements of bailouts. The previous administration couldn’t and didn’t bailout it’s own parties states.
Hawaii has been a democratic state forever and has been ripped of everything it stood for.I guess the previous administration surely did a lot for Hawaii and it’s commander and chief bragged about being born there. A high percentage of Hawaii’s economic existence relies on it’s tourist industry. You can thank all your democratic party from past to present. How’s the cost of living in Hawaii. You really think the people of Hawaii are O.K. with it? Show me the facts so I can believe you. I guarantee you have none.

        1. Look you guys can back and forth all you want about who did what but the bottom line is their has never been
a president as polarizing, petty and harmful to the country as a whole as trump. Love or like his politics he is dishonest and
incredibly narcissistic. Our country has never failed so much in the face of adversity like we have under his leadership.

          1. Opps, meant love or hate his politics😀….I’ve always thought politics in this country should be about a melting pot of ideas from the left and the right as both sides have good ideas and both have nutcase extremists……but the Republican Party has been hijacked by extremists and appears to me as the party of angry white men that feel threatened by any hint of trying to represent all Americans

          2. John W, Well I’m neither male nor angry, but I am a Republican. The political situation wasn’t always like this, and doesn’t have to be. If we don’t learn to respect people whose opinions differ from ours, and stop painting with a broad brush (all Republicans, all Democrats) we’ll never reach agreement. We can disagree without being offensive. Some individuals commenting on this site seem to forget that.

Even my son who is as far left as you can get feels Ige has done a terrible job as governor. Today I read that Lt. Gov. Green said there is no reason HI can’t open on Oct.1, with a testing plan in place. Not sure I believe that, but here’s hoping!

          3. Dear John,

Wow! I can see you believe truth over facts. I am a native of Hawaii. I see it with my own eyes and not fake news.

  13. We are on our way for a trip to South Dakota, arrive Denver, then Mt. Rushmore, back to Yellowstone, thru Wyoming, Colorado for Pikes Peak and the Royal Gorge bridge, Estes Park etc.
And you know what, 12 glorious days, and not one Covid test to take on the trip.
We are 70+, but will do what we need to take care of ourselves. Please people, wake up, follow the money as they say, I think you might see what is really going on.
I wish all the people in Hawaii all the best.
    Mahalo
    Bill

    1. Do tell “Please people, wake up, follow the money as they say, I think you might see what is really going on.” Please be specific as you what you think is really going on I am genuinely interested in your thoughts.

  14. Please please talk about West Maui which only had Turism
90%+ Every condo and resort took are taking opportunity make large repairs.
Up and down the ocean road
Full construction workers all 6days a week! Driving back to Kahului Kihei other-side where Rent is affordable ( Maui standards…. Crazy median )
Spending their money, keeping stores and eateries open. Traffic like normal… That’s what the Mayor and company see. Westside 7000-10000 true residents nearly all working 2 jobs to pay their Rents! No traffic, check out Iconic front street with 85% boarded up. Tennant’s in tug a war with Landlords being unwilling to take their 1/5 hit. The boats, luaus, activities condo cleaners….. I just lost my life’s work Restaurant and Catering company 14 staff 17 years Sweat and Tears. Mom-Pop
By by The fabric of Hawaii Promo >> our cultural culinary haven original imported field workers Japanese, Chinese,Korean,Philippines, bad missionary Portuguese and wonderful Hawaiian Renaissance
Why we never had the 500 mainland chains! That’s what’s going to happen with out actual direct help moritorium halt to all Mortage Payments
6 months discount and add to end of the terms! Federal pay 1/5 Banks-Mortage 1/5 Darn Insurance Company 1/5 State 1/5 us we take 1/5 paycut

Just print so all can pay their fifts!
Hitting Pause Button! Together all take their share. This was not a single state issue! Bug do not travel slow country roads, then stop at the state borders? it takes the fast interstate Federal highway…

  15. what i see as a major problem for travel to beautiful hawaii is if there is a continued 2 week quarantine once you arrive as a guest. no one can afford to sit in a hotel room for 2 weeks and pay those fees for nothing. then after 2 weeks, it is ok? people may not have that much vacation time to use. i totally get the need for safety and health checks and to be sure the virus is not spreading to hawaii further. this is a catch 22 dilemma to balance tourism with the health needs of hawaii.

  16. So good to know that I can’t visit my son and daughter and go out to eat with them. I can visit and make numerous trips to Home Depot to help my son make “essential “ upgrades to his place! 🤦‍♂️

  17. Keep voting for democrats to run the state of Hawaii. I am moving back to save my Island home from the destruction and giveaways. The Local people born and raised in Hawaii are struggling to live in a place they were born and love. I will be running for office of Governor. I can turn everything into what Hawaii should be to protect it’s people,it’s history,it’s industry and prosperity moving forward.

    1. economic suicide vs just killing yourself and family with the virus. Yall need to listen to the woodward interviews with Trump. HE KNEW just how serious this was and lied about it. LIED to the american citizens. at least 100,000 of those dead would still be alive had he just not lied about it. We could be back to normal life by now had he not lied about it.
Stop blaming IGE or any other governor. Its not their fault. Had we had a national plan… Trump could have been a hero but he doesnt know how to tell the truth so we now have almost 200,000 dead.

      1. Paul commenting like yours is what will get Trump re-elected.

What was it last week oh yea, Trump said WWI solders killed in action where losers and stupid.

Next week Trump caught slapping babies and kicking dogs. Hahaha

        1. Sadly Richard he would do all of that hahaha not freaking funny. He does not give a * about you me or anyone else but himself. HOw the hell would that get him re elected by something I said. Want to live in a Nazi state go ahead and re elect him because thats what we will have. A completely Lawless president who thinks he is basically Jesus.

        2. Richard,
You’ve got that right! A major problem is that CNN, or as a Ranger friend called it “Communist News Network,” is brainwashing people constantly. First it was the Russian Collusion Dilution and they never stop. People watch that bunk all the time.

What’s with calling the President all the names? The middle of the country, the salt-of-the-earth people have common sense and see thru all the deception and attacks. Notice that the radical Dems constantly accuse others of what they are doing. It’s Saul Alinsky 101.

If we don’t elect President Trump again, the anarchists/socialists will destroy our country. BTW, I’m a college-educated, suburban, white woman – the ones who they say won’t vote for Trump.

      2. This comment is ridiculous. You are the one spreading Lies. The democratic governors all over this nation are the ones to blame for the mishandling of the funds they received. The state should be open by now….and it’s not because of that! We could have further prepared our hospitals and medical staff with more equipment! We can’t hide from this virus forever and that is what they are trying to do. Our state will be in poverty if we don’t reopen!

    2. Just got back from Mexico! Had a wonderful time at the Valentin Imperial Mayan in Playa! Nonstop flights on United. No masks after you enter the resort and temperature checks! I highly recommend!

      1. Hi Dawn,
The Valentin Imperial Mayan looks like my kind of place. Thank you for sharing! Did they take your temperature with a no contact infrared thermometor at the airport and at the hotel? Or just at the airport?

I was looking at heading over to Costa Rica if HI didn’t open over Christmas, but they won’t accept visitors from most US states, CA being one of them.
        Thanks!

  18. I live on the Big Island and have 3 airbnb cottages. They have been empty since March 15. I’ve had to cancel 4 retreats. I have very little other income. I originally qualified for unemployment and then got a notice that I owe all of the funds back to the government- with no explanation! I have sent emails upon emails asking for an explanation and have received NOTHING in return. They do not answer the phone. Meanwhile, ALL the government employees have their paychecks. I suggest that they take a pay cut, based on the percentage cut in revenue that has resulted from this tyrannical shutdown to business. Those funds could be transferred to the unemployment coffers which are said to be drying up. IF we’re all in this together, everyone has to take a cut. And perhaps the governor would like to lead by example, any example…please?

    1. Aloha and mahalo for your comment. Part-time resident here. Here’s the deal: You’re going to have to open up or you’ll be committing economic suicide. It’s unfortunate, but that’s the reality. I know I’d pick opening up over certain death.

    2. Jennifer,

If you haven’t called your state rep I recommend it. Nicole’s office was able to get mine fixed within a week. Friends also.

      Good luck

  19. I am heartbroken for all of us and especially the Beautiful Hawaiian Islands..I miss them so much..Aloha to all A hui hou. ♡

  20. It is WAY past time to put on your big boy pants and open up the state (with none of this phone-app-that-acts-like-an-electronic-surveillance-collar and 2 week quarantine nonsense, either). Open up or don’t come asking the rest of the country to support you. Besides, it’s pretty clear that your own populous behaving irresponsibly is behind the recent surge there. Quit blaming tourism. Of course, we’re all scared of this Covid scourge and most of us behave responsibly with masks, and distancing, and limiting high-risk activities because of it. Nevertheless, I’ve been, essentially, locked out of my retirement home in HI since February, yet you keep taking property taxes from me. I can’t even realistically get over there to sell it. Life must go on You must end the total lockout.

      1. That does not help the businesses that are closing permanently and most tourists who would vacation there don’t have 14 days to quarantine when they are likely there for a week or 10 days.

      2. To Gayle:
You say its not a total lock out? Consider this, how willing are you to spend your vacation and thousands of dollars on air fare to be locked in a hotel room (not of your own choosing) & not be allowed to take part in any of the local culture, food, activities, etc.of the place you are visiting? Not a very appealing prospect is it?
But that seems to be what the local government wanted to orchestrate from the very beginning. “make tourism so unappealing that tourist’s won’t come to Hawaii”. Well, it worked, but at what cost?

      3. Why make the people quarantine? People should be tested to validate their condition. If you test positive, stay away from traveling. 14 days of quarantine is not an absolute fix. People can still be infected without symptoms and give it to someone else after being quarantined. Having travelers test before arriving to the Islands was a good idea. Local state officials don’t know how to handle it properly. People have been given information that is constantly changing with the direction of the wind. Are people vulnerable to the virus? Yes, and tragedy is always heart felt, but destroying the economy and freaking people out, is not the way to handle the situation at hand. Every circumstance can be intelligently handled in a proper manner. Common sense seems to be missing in many instances in the country going forward. How did the virus get to the Islands? Because state and local officials ignored the early signs of it’s potential. This virus was around from September of 2019. Nobody wants to admit the true nature of it’s inception. The more you test, the number of cases will go up. If you have underlined conditions, that raises the bar to take all the precautions to limit your exposure to others. Hawaii will struggle to recover after and when this is controlled by so called vaccines or preventative medication becomes available. I agree with one other comment that was made in this thread. Change your perception towards the people who travel to the Islands. Tourist is the life blood of Hawaii’s economy. Take precautions,pre-test before travel and use common sense.

      4. Gail, you don’t get it! Businesses are shuttered! There is absolutely no reason to come over to Hawaii to support your economy and your livelihood. No reason to come over and be locked up for 2 weeks in your room as a political prisoner. So much for the Mahalo.

    1. Hawaii isn’t just for Americans. It’s for all people. Why you all can’t just stay home and limit your numbers so the world can go back to our lives and create economic stability again.

The death of people should always be placed higher than the death of an economy.

Perhaps the answer is close the the 48 mainland states who are propagating the speed of virus spread, and open to responsible nations who can show a 24 hour old negative covid result.

You want Hawaii to survive? Then stay away so it can.

  21. I’ve rescheduled my trip to Maui 3 times. It appears it will now be a 4th time so instead I will probably cancel. I’m willing to do what it takes to be safe pre test, test in the middle and post test at my own expense. However its apparent there is no real plan for reopening. Its very frustrating. I hope the best for the residents during this difficult time.

  22. I hope the “locals” will be more welcoming and nicer to the tourists when people are able to travel there again.

    1. That door swings both ways, Jacquie. We live aloha and are happy to extend it to our visitors until they act like we owe them something or are somehow inferior to them just because they’re spending big bucks to visit year.

    2. I have been visiting Hawaii regularly since the 80’s. Had a home their for 20 years and lived there full time for 11. I always treated the locals well and they responded in kind. The problem arises when tourists treat the locals like “the help” or decide that instead of enjoying Hawai’s differences, they want it to be like the mainland. For the most part, it’s not the locals at all that are the problem. The majority of locals make their living based on tourism and are happy when the tourists come.

  23. Time to replace or remove your Governor, sad to say. The amount of control over the locals and how it has he has now excersized absolute control over his subjects and uding the police to carry out his demands. He is using fear for control. Makes it much easier next time as you’ve been programmed and now are dependant on government. You just aren’t going to be sble yo protect everybody, and if concerned, take precautions!
    Mahalo.

  24. To everyone we will be back as soon as it is safe to do so Please take care
    Thinking of you all
    Jenny from Aussie

  25. Prayers for Hawaii – and the wonderful people who live there. Always a special place to visit. We are looking forward to the end of this pandemic so we can return to Paradise on Earth. Blessings to all.

  26. Aloha – reading this literally made me cry. My friends & I are starting to plan for our February get-together in Maui and Big Island. We don’t stay at resorts – and we mostly cook for ourselves. That said we want to come and participate as much as we can with the mom & pops that we enjoy hanging out with. We love you Hawai’i!

  27. I don’t think businesses will die as Hawaii will rebound once this passes. It will be hard in the mean time for those who have lost their jobs or will lose them for a period of time. Perhaps there is something providential here that we all won’t understand until we look back on it. I personally have built a home in Oahu and unable to visit or see it until some unknown date. I have employed a few folks to take care of it which hopefully contributes to the lack of employment on the island. My wife and I are looking forward to one day being back on the island in a permanent state. We are comfortable with being uncomfortable and the unknown and encouraging all to have the same mindset! God bless!!

  28. Maybe the silver lining is a long overdue lesson for Hawaii regarding it’s primary sufficiency relies solely on tourism. A return to some local industry is required to maintain some degree of viable independence? What is done, cannot be undone. The question is, what have we learned? And will we apply it?

  29. We are also hoping for an October 1St opening as we have reservations for the 14TH but will have to give it up if Gov. Ige doesn’t give the go ahead by the 16th. We love Hawaii and go regularly. So sad!

    1. We also have reservations to visit Kauai and Maui on October 14. We don’t want to cancel again so please open up! We love your beautiful islands!
