Hawaii green sea turtles “Honu” have their own Independence Day celebration on July 4th. If you find yourself on the Big Island this weekend, take part in the 33rd annual celebration at the Mauna Lani Hotel. The event is free, and the public is welcome.
The green sea turtles scheduled for release on July 4th, have been cared for in saltwater ponds at the hotel for two to three years. They arrive on the Big Island from Oahu’s Sea Life Park, where they are born.
A few years ago, a turtle found at Kaloko-Honokohau National Historic Park was determined to be one that was released on July 4, 1999. The turtle, which would now be 26 years old, weighed in at a healthy 267 pounds with a shell nearly three feet long.
Green sea turtles have been around for 200 million years. Read more about them here: Hawaii’s Green Sea Turtles.

While you are visiting, don’t forget to walk around the 11-acre historical Kalāhuipua‘a Fishponds. It’s located on the grounds of the Mauna Lani. This living museum was maintained by the ancient Hawaiians. Bottom samples taken from the ponds predate Western contact and go as far back as 250 B.C. It’s one of our favorite things to do on Big Island.
OMG! Mahalo for sharing this info. Sadly, I am not on island for todays event but now I know for future events. The Sea Turtle is my favorite animal. They are so amazing to see in person and I love that the Islands take such care to ensure their longevity as a species!
Have a wonderful day! 🤙🏼🌺
