Hanalei Bay’s future will be on the table tonight at a meeting to discuss plans proposed by eBay’s billionaire founder Pierre Omidyar. His company wants to build a hotel and residential complex on 64 acres perched just across from the Hanalei river. The proposal is for 120 vacation rentals consisting of single family and cottage units, as well as a restaurant, spa, meeting facility and pool. The image above is a concept of how that might look.
Over 5,000 people have already signed a petition opposing the development. Thus far Omidyar has failed to discuss the project with the community, and tonight should yield the first opportunity.
Here’s how the Hanalei river looks in reality today:
Multi-million dollar homes sitting over beloved Hanalei Bay at Black Pot beach, which is itself in the process of being enlarged and improved, would be a heartbreak to residents and visitors alike.
