Hawaii Restaurant Safety In The News

The state of Hawaii will soon be requiring that all restaurants display health inspection report cards. One month into the new program, it is being reported that 71% of the Oahu restaurants inspected thus far have received a green passing placard. Unfortunately, that leaves 29% that have received two or more violations resulting in a yellow conditional approval card.

We welcome this program since food safety and awareness is an especially important issue in Hawaii’s warmer climate. Heat can boost food and water-borne related illness by enabling the spread of pathogens. We’ve also personally experienced food related illness in Hawaii, caused by products not being kept at correct temperatures.

Over the next six month all restaurants in Hawaii will be included in this important program which is supported by the Hawaii Restaurant Association. At this time, however, less than 500 Oahu restaurants have received inspections.

This most recent report is a great improvement inasmuch as during the first week of the program last month up to 70% of restaurants checked had two or more violations.

We’ll all look for these green food safety placards to be prominently displayed in Hawaii restaurants soon.
