How Hawaiian Airlines’ Starlink Revolutionized the Entire Airline Industry

Hawaiian Airlines recently made waves in the aviation industry by becoming the first major airline to install Starlink satellite internet across its entire fleet of long-distance aircraft. This bold move did two things. First, it revolutionized the in-flight experience, setting a new standard for connectivity, especially for WiFi-challenged routes that Hawaiian flies. Second, it changed the global airline industry.

Hawaiian Airlines has always been known for its unique and often challenging routes for WiFi, flying between the Hawaiian Islands and the mainland U.S., Asia, and Oceania. These routes have presented significant connectivity challenges due to long stretches over the Pacific Ocean, where conventional satellite coverage has struggled to keep up.

For example, both Delta and United are still challenged to provide WiFi connectivity between the US West Coast and Hawaii. BOH editors flew from Hawaii to Los Angeles this week and were met with the (unfortunately) not-unusual announcement on United’s 737 MAX 8 that there would be no WiFi on the flight. However, with Starlink’s advanced satellite technology, Hawaiian Airlines has managed to offer consistent, high-speed internet service, even in these previously challenged areas.

Free WiFi – A Hawaii Game-Changer.

Hawaiian Airlines took the step, albeit later than other airlines, to offer WiFi, then did so with this top-of-the-line service, free of charge and advertising, to all passengers. It is clearly the most no-nonsense connectivity in the sky. This move set them apart, with most airlines still charging for in-flight internet.

BOH editors paid $8 each for terrible WiFi on Southwest this week. It was so bad in fact that Southwest refunded our money without even being asked.

In any event, by making this a complimentary service, Hawaiian Airlines improves the overall passenger experience and raises the bar for in-flight amenities on Hawaii flights.

United Airlines and Air France quickly followed.

The impact of Hawaiian Airlines’ decision was felt almost immediately across the industry. Within days, United Airlines announced its plans to install Starlink on its aircraft fleet.

Following that, Air France also joined the trend, signaling a rapid shift in how airlines view in-flight connectivity.

The move by Hawaiian Airlines has created a strong trans-oceanic current, prompting other airlines to rethink their internet offerings and consider the importance of offering passengers means for staying connected while in the air.

Final thoughts on free Hawaii WiFi.

Hawaiian Airlines went from being a WiFi laggard to truly changing the internet game by being the first major U.S. airline to install Starlink across its entire fleet and offer it free of both cost and advertising. This move has not only improved the travel experience for passengers but has also forced others in the industry to adapt quickly. With other major airlines like United and Air France following suit, it’s clear that Hawaiian Airlines’ pioneering decision will be felt for years to come and will continue to influence others.

And what about Alaska Airlines?

It certainly leaves us wondering what Alaska Airlines will decide to do with its fleet when it becomes a single certificate operator that includes Hawaiian Airlines in the next year or so. Any thoughts?

  1. I just got off of a HA flight from LAS to OGG on Sunday. The connection to their complimentary Starlink WiFi system was seamless, fast and the selection of entertainment was bountiful for the 5 1/2 our flight. Mahalo HA for the system upgrade. It’s very much appreciated!

  2. The irony of this situation lies in the stark contrast between the forward-thinking investment in Starlink Wi-Fi to be a market trendsetter and the neglect of essential aspects of the customer experience, such as in-app cancellations, changes, and managing refunds. In this regard, Southwest has far outperformed them. With the new Alaska Airlines management now in place, it is imperative they address this gap promptly. When multiple options are available, customer experience is the true differentiator.

  3. Equally important is the switch to “BYOD”. Your photo says it all. To view anything on-board you need to bring your own cell phone or tablet along. The devices shown in the photo are all passenger owned. Most Airlines’s on-board WIFI servers will include movies and music you can also view. Not sure if HA has that yet or not. This reduces the weight and complexity of the aircraft-saving fuel and maintenance costs.
