In an announcement this week from the Hawaii Department of Health, some patrons at one of the last of Hawaii’s old-style restaurants, Tahiti Nui, at Hanalei Kauai, have been asked to get tested after a Covid cluster arose. Tahiti Nui was featured in the movie The Descendants, pictured above, with George Clooney and Beau Bridges in better times. The legendary restaurant and bar have been welcoming patrons for 58 years.
“The Hawaii Department of Health has identified a COVID-19 cluster of cases associated with Tahiti Nui Restaurant in Hanalei on Kauai. The cluster is under investigation and to date consists of seven confirmed cases of individuals, including both restaurant workers and diners.” It is expected that more cases will be announced.
The DOH asks anyone who visited the restaurant from July 30 through August 4 to get tested as soon as possible due to exposure to an employee who has COVID.
“We are making this announcement today to reach as many patrons as quickly possible.” – DOH. It is a reminder that masks are required indoors here in Hawaii except when actively eating and drinking. This is without regard to vaccination status and includes both customers and employees.
About Tahiti Nui
The popular restaurant opened in 1963 and has been family-run and operated ever since. On Tuesday and Wednesday evenings, they feature a family-style luau. You can normally still enjoy happy hour at the legendary Tahiti Nui pub in an atmosphere that harkens back to days of old and to The Descendants, from a decade ago.

Kudos to Nanea for putting our community first. I knew Aunty Louise, she was as amazing as you! Mahalo for all that you do!
I’ve noticed that most of the airlines are reporting a sizable drop off in air travel after Labor Day.
I love the Nui. I am in Hanalei now and sad that it is closed. Great luau (at least it was 2 years ago). I saw Pierce there about 8 years ago.
