We’ve written before about the practice of using “hidden city” tickets to Hawaii. On a recent flight from Lihue to Los Angeles the price was outrageous. But then we found a ticket on American Airlines from Lihue to San Diego, with a stop in Los Angeles, for one-half the price. We thought about buying that ticket, flying with only carry-on luggage, and then getting off the plane in Los Angeles. End of issue, right? Not according to the airlines, the courts, and what just happened this week.
What happened to this skiplagging teenager.
Hunter Parsons said he bought a flight for his son from Gainesville to NYC with a layover in Charlotte. The man told his son to get off in Charlotte, which was the real destination where his father lives. It was the son’s first time flying alone as well.
His father said that we’ve “used Skiplagged almost exclusively for the last five to eight years.”
What happened next is that the gate agent reportedly was suspicious about the teen’s actual destination. The father reported that his son was “Interrogated a little bit, ultimately taken to a security room. They kind of got out of him that he was planning to disboard in Charlotte and not going to make the connecting flight.” The teen’s father indicated that he wasn’t aware of how negatively the airlines viewed this practice.
As a result, American canceled the teen’s ticket, and a new ticket was required. The father felt it was unfair to leave the child in such a predicament. “Our concerns are he is a minor and was kind of left to fend for himself several states away.”
We do see the airlines’ position of working with a minor in this circumstance, as they would be responsible for ensuring that the passenger makes it to the point of turning them over to another responsible adult. And we aren’t sure that this would have made the news again in quite this way if it weren’t for that complexity.
To our knowledge, however, the airlines have never prevailed legally regarding skiplagging. American, however, says that “Purchasing a ticket without intending to fly all flights to gain lower fares (hidden city ticketing) is a violation of American Airlines terms and conditions and is outlined in our Conditions of Carriage online. Our Customer Relations team has been in touch with the customer to learn more about their experience.”
Are gate agents the enforcers?
United Airlines, American Airlines, and others want their airport agents to become monitors of the long-standing and not illegal practice of skiplagging. They still fear it is a potentially growing trend for travelers to and from Hawaii (and elsewhere) to buy tickets to final destinations they will never see. UAL wants agents to report suspected violators of their terms to their corporate security. That’s based on a previous internal memo that went public.
Such practices have been quite widespread for as long as we can remember. Editor Jeff remembers once years ago buying a ticket with a flight that started in Harare because a travel agent said it would work and save him a lot of money. That was a long time ago and, while the trick was unfamiliar to him, it worked like a charm. Hidden city ticketing to and from Hawaii among other places has existed for decades. While the airlines have always hated it, and felt it was a violation of their terms of carriage, the practice has nonetheless endured among some savvy consumers.
United Airlines position.
United Airlines told employees, “This practice can potentially offer discounts on airfare and is not aligned with United’s contract of carriage. As the practice grows, we need to ensure that we’re both supporting our customers and properly enforcing the contract of carriage rules and United policies.” United Airlines further stated that “it is against our ticketing policies to purchase an additional segment with no intention to fly.”
United is asking employees to use discretion. What if the traveler has a medical condition that necessitates their not continuing? But when that isn’t the situation, United is asking their agents to alert the airline’s corporate security: “Our priority is to safely get our customers and their baggage to their final destinations, so always try to understand the customer’s situation and avoid confrontation when handling hidden city ticketing instances. Corporate security is better positioned to follow up on the situation and take appropriate action to ensure customers are following contract of carriage rules and United policies.”
United has threatened to seek reimbursement from those who are repeat offenders and asserted their right to take action, including the use of a collection agency to recoup lost income, termination of the passenger’s frequent flyer status, or banning them from the airline entirely.
Enter Skiplagged.com
Editor Rob coincidentally needs to get to a meeting in Charlotte. The problem is that the price is about $800 one-way from Honolulu later this month. In preparing this article he also decided to at least check on the Skiplagged website and found that with their plan, he would pay less than half ($396). The way it would work is that Rob would buy a ticket to Tampa that stops in Charlotte, and simply not board the final leg from Charlotte to Tampa. In the end, Rob did not buy the skiplagged ticket. The issue of skiplagging.
This issue was brought to the forefront several years ago in part due to the Skiplagged website, which United sued unsuccessfully. That site helps consumers locate the best deals using hidden city destinations. There have been rumors that other websites intend to follow the Skiplagged practice.
While the airlines assert that this practice breaks their pricing system, Skiplagged says that consumers who buy tickets should be able to do as they please with them, including not completing the journey if they so choose.
No checked bags and other rules!
1. No checked bags. Travelers who don’t understand or forget, may inadvertently check bags to their final destination. Obviously, you can’t tell the airline you aren’t taking that last connecting flight.
2. One-way or return flights only. This only works on one-way tickets or on the return portion of a round-trip ticket. Otherwise, if you miss a flight on your outbound trip, the airline might cancel the rest of the reservation.
3. Should your itinerary get re-routed, there is some possibility you too might not end up where you expected.

It’s quite odd how airlines are up in arms about this, yet if they have to bump someone because they “overbook”, which is all too common, they usually throw money at the passengers getting bumped, comp hotels and add miles on traveler accounts if applicable. That would far exceed most of what a skiplagged flight would save one. Besides, they all make it up in great amounts with all the add-on nonsense of today’s flight practices. Seat selection, checked bags, early boarding and on and on. They rape us and expect the flying community to take it on the chin, sorry big air, sometimes we outsmart you.
I think if there’s a seat available and I pay for it, I get to use it how I like. This is part of the free marketplace in the USA. Airlines are still making money on a seat they wouldn’t have otherwise sold, so why be so greedy?
I0t’s strange – it seems that many passengers who skiplag are buying tickets that offer cheaper prices for more distance destinations.
And, the cost of a flight to their intended destination is cheaper than if you simply buy a ticket to the intended destination.
Why are airlines so upset; the weight of the plane for their last segment will be less. Of course, they don’t want their customers saving money. Look at all the extra charges they’ve introduced over the past 15 years.
Airlines are pissed that savvy customers are beating them at their own game. They need to stop whining.
Skiplagged today, other names in prior decades. Anybody remember Tom Parsons at Best Fares?
He was a fed-up business traveler and discovered (not that it was a big secret) throw-away ticketing, also known as back-to-back ticketing.
Super saver fares became common place in the 1980’s, were non-refundable and almost always required a round-trip purchase and a Saturday night stay.
I believe I read some years ago that UAL was attempting to sue a passenger in Illinois state court over hidden-city ticketing. The court threw out the case as they don’t regulate airlines at the local (state) level. For whatever reason, UAL never pursued the case in federal court.
When back-to-back ticketing was popular, travel agencies back in the day would receive debit memos from the airlines revenue accounting departments for their clients bad behavior (usually corporate accounts). That still didn’t stop the practice.
If you are okay with the risks, and are not tied to an airline from a frequent flyer/elite status standpoint, back-to-back ticketing and hidden city ticketing are great ways to save money!
Most airfares today can be purchased on a one-way basis and in today’s current airfare pricing environment, hidden-city ticketing is probably more advantageous.
I look at this way – are Kroger’s, Publix, Hannaford, Safeway, etc. going to come after me because I threw out a half used can of juice, or I purchased a larger size package because that was less expensive than the smaller size and I threw out the remaining portion? Of course not.
Just don’t check any bags!

Airlines have become so greedy, it’s surprising they even let passengers leave the planes in “hidden” cities, Presumably to stretch their legs or grab something to eat.
There are plenty of standby or non-rev passengers to fill those empty seats. Screw the airlines and their cattle-car accomidations, surley service and usual late arrivals and departures

I would hope some attorney would take us on a pro bono. If there’s no law against skip lagging, removing the teenager from the flight was endangerment.

I agree that if this was *really* challenged in court the Airlines would lose. If you can find a cheaper ticket, getting to the same destination, then it’s a failure of the airline to price their ticket prices accordingly. After 2 bailouts with tax payer dollars, nickel and diming us all to death with baggage, seats, more seats squeezing us all in, it’s lucky Airlines have our business in the first place! So, yeah – it’s my *right* to change my mind, have a medical condition, have an emergency, etc to deplane wherever I so choose.

United doesn’t like Skip lagging but they have no problem leaving me at SFO when flying to SMF. When trying to get home at 11:00PM and they say they can get me on the 11:00 PM flight the next day.
They also tell me our morning flight is on time when there’s no plane there And you have to tell them you’re driving to SFO to make your connection or you can’t board at SFO.

The big thing these days is one of the issues you mentioned – flights getting changed all the time so that one day you are being routed through Denver and the next day you are suddenly scheduled on a flight through Phoenix instead…. why the airlines can’t just set up their flights and charges to make skiplagging economically unviable, I don’t know.
This is not a good example of the perils of skiplagging. As the traveler is a minor, isn’t the airline responsible to see that they get to the ticketed destination? By skiplagging a underage traveler the father put the airline in a very bad situation. If the traveler were to go missing at the layover city it is likely the airline would alert the authorities. Any parent would hold the airline responsible if their child went missing at any time during a flight.
Some years ago, I flew United from LIH to SJC via LAX. Was scheduled as same day, not overnight. Got to LAX, and United had canceled my flight to SJC, without any recourse, place to stay, nothing. Was supposed to show up at 6am for flight to SJC. But, they had another flight to SJC that was boarding and there was room so they (Untied) let me on. All good until I tried to check in for my return to LIH, and they had canceled my ticket.
The “minor child” was 19 years old.
Skiplagging is not a violation of criminal law but it is a violation of the airline’s conditions of carriage to which the passenger agrees when they choose to buy a ticket.
Air travel is a service, not a good. You can’t just discard the portion you don’t want to use. If you want to travel to Charlotte, you have to pay the fare to travel to Charlotte, not the fare to Tampa or New York.
Shame on the father for teaching his son to not honor the obligations he has agreed to!
Aloha Rob and Jeff!! American Airlines controls 90% of the flights arriving and departing from Charlotte. Due to their domination, they greatly increase the fare to/leaving CLT. Instead of people worrying about some skiplagging, let’s focus on AA’s almost complete monopoly of CLT. Price the flights fairly and there will be no need to skiplag. Mahalo.

There is one instance where skiplagging works with checked baggage. That is when you are entering the US from an international trip. When arriving in the US, you are required to collect your checked baggage and recheck it on to your final destination after clearing customs/border control.
The US is the only country I’m aware of that you cannot check your baggage through to your final destination when returning on an international trip.
