I’ve been enjoying your newsletter for a long time. I make a two week visit to one of the islands at least every two years. In preparation for an early Dec trip to Kauai, I especially note the car rental ads you allow to be posted on your website, With your seeming integrity, I wonder why you would allow such false advertising of rates offered that are nowhere near the actual prices one finds after clicking on them. This does you no service in cultivating credibility.
Hi Macvickers.
Here’s how it works. We do not place ads. We have advertising spots and companies bid for those in real-time. We don’t know who they will be.
Aloha.
Aloha kākou, my name is Charlie, I’m both Polynesian and European. Both my great grandparents and grandma, on my mom’s side was born and raised their in fact, my great grandfather was once a konohiki for Kalalea, Nua lolo and Miloli’i. I myself worked, hunted and explored da Napali coast for decades. I coordinated several Search and Recovery missions for some of da missing persons.
All being said; I believe your information is pretty spot on!
Mahalo nui loa for sharing…
Many of the missing people have come to Hayward CA to live in the creeks and drainages. They want to be alone with each other and methamphetamine. Rich people bring them food to feed their rats.
This was a very interesting story I had never heard before. It reminds me of the Heavens Gate cult, the Nike shoe clan, catching the Halle Bopp comet.I wonder if they caught it?
Interesting you brought this topic up. I’m not saying it’s the same thing, but you should really look into the book called “Missing 411”. A former police detective, David Paulides, has been investigating hundreds of people who have disappeared under mysterious circumstances with national forests and parks. He even created a movie/documentary under the same name (found on YouTube). He never purposes theories only evidence. So, this phenomenon is Not limited to just Kaui.
I lived in Haena for awhile, and I would say any place surrounded by rough ocean is prime for missing people. I also lived on Maui for 14 years and they are right up there with missing people as well.
Sounds like the making of an interesting book…..
We camped back on the trail for several days in 1983. Met many a hiker with a back pack, hiking boots and a smile, nothing more.
A “farmer” advised us to stay on the main trails and we wouldn’t “get hurt”. I wonder how many have wandered into hidden agriculture and didn’t live to tell?
Beat of Hawaii,
Thanks for this very interesting article. There was (is) a reality TV show called “Curse of Oak Island”, might there be the next one entitled “The Curse of Garden Isle”?
Thanks,
JC
On the BI most of disappearances are due to the alien space portal in Kalapana…
I remember my parents taking our family to Kauai in 1975 (I think). We stayed in Princeville. One day, when leaving Kee Beach, my dad picked up a “hippie” girl hitch hiking near the “cold pond”. My dad, mom, three siblings, myself, and one cute hippie in a bikini were all crammed into a rented station wagon. It became clear very quickly that she was living life off the grid and far away from the conveniences of life that we were accustomed to – specifically soap and deodorant. All these years later, my siblings and I still remember that pungent aroma.
I was there one year, many years ago now, and I was introduced to a few grown men, in kapaa and lihue, they were up to no good, trafficking most likely, i made it out alive, escaped. So do not travel there alone, and stay in hotels and make a community while there, do not live the dream alone there, it is in fact dangerous.
I guess if I wanted to disappear or end my life, I would also choose Kauai as the place to do it.
This is only a question why are so many people disappearing and noone seems like they know anything ?? Like David hall what happened to him ????
I had heard about the Taylor camp but none of the other stories. Thank you for this very interesting article. I think I will have to do some Google research and learn more.
Wow! What a fascinating bizarre history, I had no idea having moved to Kauai from the mainland a few years ago. As long as there are unspoiled places of wilderness left on this Earth, it seems humans will try to infiltrate them, often to a tragic end. Nature is wild, we must respect her power as well as her beauty.
This past weekend Dateline NBC ran a show on Love Has One’s Mother G*d Amy Carlson who recently died. Your blog is very timely!
“The group believes that actor Robin Williams became a follower of theirs following his death.”
… if you didn’t think they were crazy before that point….
“The group’s Wainiha north shore rental ended abruptly when the home and a vehicle were vandalized as more than 100 demonstrators encircled the home and demanded that the Colorado cult group leave Kauai.”
That famous Hawaii aloha is still alive and well I see. 🙂
I’m just glad all of these kooks are going to Kauai and not the big island.
Hi! This was a very interesting post…thank you for sharing. I can’t find any mention of Dan Mark’s body being found…everything I’ve read says he is still missing. Would you be able to share a link with more information?
Thank you!
Michelle
Looks like Amy Carlson has gone to the great beyond to talk to Robin Williams about his Love has Won church membership. The bodycam footage of police discovering her mummified body in a house in Colorado was just released 2 days ago….

Thank you for a most interesting piece. According to the information posted by Jesse’s sister, he has never yet been found. Is there additional information regarding his recovery?
Fascinating story. Thanks!
.
Hadn’t heard of Lemuria, but always felt Kauai was heaven on earth!
Amy Carlson of the former Love has won cult died last year.
Thank you for the well written article. It was nice to read something about Hawaii that didn’t pertain to all the present unpleasantries.
Wow, this is an odd interlude to the insanity going on almost everywhere these days. Thanks for the break from our unreal reality.
To what do you attribute the inordinate number of strange happenings on the Garden Isle? The rugged terrain and remote locales? A relatively small number of residents leaving plenty of unpopulated areas for weirdness? Or some sort of cosmic portal attracting and claiming vulnerable souls?
If Lemuria was supposed to be “heaven on earth”, this ain’t it.
Aloha,
Great read! Scary! Perfect timing for the full moon and Halloween!
Mahalo
Years ago I saw a news program about Vietnam veterans who decided not to go back to their homes and instead set up camp on the Big Island in the Waipio Valley. It was portrayed at that time as being a dangerous place wrought with drug use and reports of locals hearing gun shots coming from there at night. Not a good place for unsuspecting curious hikers to wander into. Do you know if this is still in existence on the Big Island?
I never knew! What a fascinating story! We hope to visit Kauai for the first time on our next trip to the islands. The hippy communes of Kauai sounds similar to Christiana in Copenhagen.
Love the stories. In actuality the FBI has said, it’s much easier to get lost and not found in a big city, because of all the millions of people that someone can blend in with. Whereas in a rural area, it can be difficult for someone to blend in.
Mahalo Guys
Aloha BoH friends – at the risk of sounding kooky (even in my own head) – I have heard of Lemuria, and a month prior to moving to Big Island in 1987, had a (non drug induced) mystical magical experience in Mount Shasta (California), also associated with Lemuria, that continued through my time living on BI. I won’t go into details, but I can tell you that my personal life has never been the same.
As someone who moved to Kauai 15 years ago the island’s beauty still holds me in a grip much the same from the first time I ever visited. I was attracted by the inherent beauty that I believe makes appreciating the “divine” much easier to do that n my daily life. My only consolation for these missing folks and their families is these people went missing and found whatever they were looking for. Anyone who visits Kauai, I would like to think and heard often, feels this pull to experience more.
Aloha! We live in lovely Mount Shasta (land of Lemerians) but also visit the islands regularly. I’m writing this from Maui after leaving Kauai a few days ago. I’m a retired park ranger so I have have knowledge of people disappearing. Disappearing intentionally, and never popping up again, takes detailed planning and is quite rare. Most of the disappearances are likely unintentional and permanent.
Mahalo for a very interesting article!
Warm regards, Susan
Great article BTW. I always recommend potential visitors to you site.
I had no idea! Great story and information! I loved this very much. Thank you for your research and post.
I lived on Kauai and moved back to Maui after strange experiences on Kauai. While living there I began doing research on underwater archeology findings and ancient archeology discoveries. I’m willing to talk with you about what I learned. None of which I’ve made public. It could help you somehow?
a late night episode of Ancient Aliens came on that was all about this theory. I was blown away, all of his friends and family back home never really knew why he had chosen to disappear in Kauai of all places. I’m working on a documentary of his life and disappearance to help raise awareness about this phenomena of going missing on purpose. His mother is sick and I fear she will never know what truly happened to her son before it is too late. I would love to talk to someone who knows about Kauai
My name is Ian, I am Alexander Gumm’s friend who organized the search for him and went to Kauai in November 2019 to look for him. Alex was absolutely obsessed with Lemuria, Pleiadeans, and the Sirius star system. He was without a doubt the most knowledgeable person I knew about metaphysics, alchemy, hermetic philosophy, and overall high strangeness. What is interesting to me is that I had no idea until a year after we returned that Lemuria was connected to Kauai until…
I was born on Oahu and while I haven’t lived there since childhood, I love the islands in general and feel at home on Oahu, the big island, and Maui. I have been to Kauai twice and felt very uncomfortable there, like a deep gut feeling I should not be there. Anyone else experience or have an explanation for this?
Very interesting article. A while back, I wrote a noir detective novel called “Gone On Kauai,” about a young woman who goes missing on the island, and the NYC detective who tries to find her. I had no idea that there was a kind of mystical ambiance of missing persons on Kauai until I read this piece. I had simply visited the island and sensed that it was an evocative setting for a mystery novel.
Intriguing…
Some friends and I hiked the Kalalau trail in 1969. We were 19 years old and were planning a day trip. However, we started later than we should have and when it started getting dark, we made our way back, but only part of the way, since the last 30 minutes we were in the dark. We remembered passing a hut on the way in and made it back to the hut to take shelter for the night.
Apparently the overnight restrictions were not in place at the time.
I don’t believe we went far enough in to get to the part of the trail with steep drop offs. Fortunately for us, since we had to hike part way back in the dark!
